The moonlight illuminated the Drought Demon, allowing me to see its form clearly. The Drought Demon had a human-like body covered in long fur, resembling a giant gorilla. I was standing at a distance, so I couldn't make out its detailed features.
"Old Man, I'm going to eat you alive!" The Drought Demon was furious, raising its hands to strike Wu Jingye, as if intending to flatten him into a meat patty.
Wu Jingye scoffed disdainfully and said, "Hmph, a mere artificial Drought Demon dares to act recklessly in front of me!"
With a swing of his Dust Whisk, Wu Jingye bound the Drought Demon's hands together. Then, pulling hard in the direction the Drought Demon was charging from, he caused it to stumble and nearly fall.
"Ah, die for me!" After suffering this unexpected setback, the Drought Demon became enraged and broke free from the bindings of the Dust Whisk, roaring as it charged at Wu Jingye.
"Beast, come here!" Wu Jingye did not engage the Drought Demon head-on; instead, he led it away from the formation and moved away from the reservoir to fight at a distance.
Hearing the sounds of battle not far away filled me with curiosity. I glanced at the formation set up by the reservoir and frowned as I thought, "Is Wu Jingye out of his mind? Why set up these formations against the Drought Demon if he isn't going to use them? He must be losing it!"
"We're starting our operation!" Just as I was about to go watch Wu Jingye fight the Drought Demon, I heard voices from a group of strong men standing by the reservoir. They planted their torches into the ground while some carried bags of Quicklime and poured them into the reservoir. Others brought buckets of Black Dog Blood and dumped them into the water.
"What are they doing?" I stood still, puzzled by their actions.
After five or six minutes without continuing to pour anything else into the reservoir, each person picked up a long bamboo pole and began stirring the water vigorously.
"What is that?" I noticed bubbles rising in the middle of the reservoir, followed by something surfacing. Due to poor lighting, I couldn't see what it was.
"Here it comes! Everyone get ready!" someone shouted. Half of them put down their bamboo poles and took up Peach Wood Swords, positioning themselves behind those still stirring.
The bubbles in the center of the reservoir multiplied rapidly, and more things began to surface, slowly drifting toward the shore.
When those things from Journey to the West were only five meters away from the bank, I finally saw their true nature. Floating on the water were severed heads that had swollen and rotted in the reservoir; many were decaying with maggots wriggling within their putrid flesh.
"Oh my god, there are so many Water Corpses!" Seeing those corpses made my stomach churn violently, and I couldn't hold back as bile surged up and spilled out.
The bodies in the reservoir were those who had drowned over the years. Normally, these corpses posed no threat, but now, infected by the demonic aura of the Drought Demon, they had transformed into Water Corpses, which was to be expected.
"So these formations are meant to deal with Water Corpses!" I suddenly understood Wu Jingye's intentions, completely taken aback by how meticulous his plan was.
While I was lost in thought, the Water Corpses had already swum to the shore. The strong men were well-prepared; they wielded Peach Wood Swords and aimed for the Water Corpses' Spirit Covers and throats.
"Quite professional!" I couldn't help but praise their technique as I watched them.
Water Corpses were formed from the demonic aura of the Drought Demon. Their bodies could move because a Grievance was hidden in their mouths. As long as that Grievance was forced out, the Water Corpses would revert to mere corpses.
The Spirit Cover and throat were precisely the weak points of a Water Corpse; striking those two areas with a Peach Wood Sword would naturally force the Grievance out.
"Help! Save me! Please!"
The previously calm situation was suddenly interrupted. A corpse had been hiding underwater, evading everyone's notice as it stealthily approached the shore. When that Water Corpse suddenly emerged from the surface, those on land had no time to react before it grabbed a man's legs and dragged him into the reservoir.
"There's actually a Water Corpse that has gained intelligence!" I was surprised by this scene but didn't dwell on it. Gripping my Peach Wood Sword, I rushed over.
The strong men's reactions were swift; upon hearing the cries for help, they immediately surrounded the area. Some grabbed hold of the drowning man's hands, desperately pulling him toward the shore, while others swung their Peach Wood Swords at the Water Corpse's arms.
"Li Team Leader, hold on!" someone shouted. It turned out that the person being pulled down was their captain, named Li Hanling.
"Oh!" The Water Corpse let out a shriek, thoroughly enraged by the group of strong men. It opened its mouth and bit down on Li Hanling's leg, tearing off a chunk of flesh with a fierce tug.
"Ah! Pull me up quickly!" Li Hanling screamed in agony, his face turning pale as cold sweat poured from his forehead.
The Water Corpse was stimulated by Li Hanling's blood; its eyes turned blood-red as it chewed on the piece of flesh before swallowing it whole. The Water Corpse licked its lips clean of bloodstains, revealing a greedy expression as it lunged again at Li Hanling's leg.
"Help me! Save me!" Li Hanling shouted as he saw the movements of the Water Corpse, his legs kicking wildly, trembling in fear.
"Get out of the way, let me handle this!" Just then, I arrived on the scene. I rushed to the front, grabbed a bucket of Black Dog Blood, and poured it directly over the Water Corpse.
Black Dog Blood is effective against evil entities, making it perfect for dealing with a Water Corpse that had just awakened its intelligence. As the Black Dog Blood soaked into the Water Corpse, it burned through its flesh, creating wounds the size of fingers. A strong stench of decay emanated from the Water Corpse.
"Ah!" The Water Corpse screamed in agony as the Black Dog Blood hit it, releasing its grip and clutching its head in pain.
"Ultimate Earth, Mystical Arts Have Methods. Command!" Seizing the opportunity while the Water Corpse was disoriented, I recited an incantation and swung my Peach Wood Sword at its Spirit Cover. The Peach Wood Sword easily broke through the Water Corpse's defenses, and a cloud of gray gas escaped from its mouth. The Water Corpse's body stiffened and fell completely still, becoming nothing more than a corpse.
By this time, Li Hanling had been pulled ashore by a group of strong men. After dealing with the Water Corpse, I walked over to him. I glanced at his wound and noticed that it wasn't tainted by Corpse Qi, which relieved me.
Seeing me approach, Li Hanling immediately grabbed my hand and asked anxiously, "Master, am I going to turn into a Zombie?"
I shook off Li Hanling's hand and shot him an exasperated look. "Uncle, have you watched too many Zombie movies? You won't turn into a Zombie."
I pointed at Li Hanling's still-bleeding wound. "But if you don't bandage that up soon, you might very well become a corpse."
