As I walked home, memories of Wu Jingye's changing attitude ignited a fire of anger within me. Gritting my teeth, I muttered, "Wu Jingye, I'll remember you!"
When I reached my doorstep, I suddenly felt something cool fall onto my head.
"What’s going on?" I reached up to touch my head and looked up at the sky. To my surprise, I saw the moon obscured by dark clouds, and large raindrops began to fall, hitting me with a chilling splash.
"It's raining?" I stared at the raindrops in astonishment. Logically, the Drought Demon should not have been defeated yet; it shouldn't be raining. This sudden change must be suspicious.
The rain intensified, pattering loudly on the rooftops and waking everyone in the village. People began to emerge from their homes.
"It's raining! Everyone come out!"
I couldn't tell who shouted, but soon everyone rushed into the downpour, letting the rain drench them. Laughter filled the air as they played joyfully in the rain.
"Wait, something must be wrong!" My brows furrowed; I couldn't shake off my unease. I racked my brain trying to figure out what was amiss, but nothing clicked.
The rain continued to pour heavily, eventually turning into a torrential downpour. Only then did the villagers put away their playful spirits and return indoors.
Once inside, Uncle excitedly grabbed Aunt's hand and exclaimed, "It must be Wu Bansian who killed that Drought Demon! Otherwise, how could it be raining? We need to thank him properly tomorrow!"
Hearing Uncle's words made me shake my head in disbelief. Others might not know, but I was certain that Wu Jingye could not have slain the Drought Demon in such a short time. I had just come from there; it had only been about ten minutes since I left. He wasn't skilled enough to defeat the Drought Demon with a single strike.
"Wait a minute... Why do Uncle and the others have Corpse Qi on them?" Upon closer inspection, I noticed a faint aura of Corpse Qi surrounding them. I quickly checked myself and found that I too had a trace of Corpse Qi clinging to me.
While Corpse Qi wouldn't kill someone outright, it could dull an ordinary person's mind. Over time, even if they didn't die, they would likely fall seriously ill.
"So that's what's strange about this rain!" Suddenly, it dawned on me that the Drought Demon had deliberately mixed Corpse Qi into the rainwater to numb the villagers' minds and then take advantage of their vulnerability to wipe out everyone in the village.
"It seems we need to deal with that Drought Demon quickly before things get worse!" This trace of Corpse Qi had no effect on me; channeling my inner energy, I swiftly dispersed the Corpse Qi enveloping me.
I walked over to Uncle and Aunt, secretly biting my fingertip to draw a symbol in my palm, then slapped it on their backs while chanting, "Ultimate Earth, Mystical Arts Have Methods. Command!"
As my palm made contact with Uncle and Aunt, the Corpse Qi surrounding them dissipated instantly. They shuddered as if struck by an electric current, turning to look at me in unison.
"Jiang Ling, what are you doing?" Uncle asked, a hint of anger in his voice.
"Nothing, nothing," I scratched the back of my head and quickly dashed into the bedroom.
I heard Uncle's snoring from the next room before I got up, packed all my talismans into my waist pouch, and climbed out the window again.
The rain outside was still falling but had lessened significantly, at least not hindering my movements. I held a flashlight and headed toward the reservoir.
"Woof Woof!" Just as I reached the village entrance, I suddenly heard barking from the roadside. Curiously, I shone my flashlight in that direction.
I saw a fist-sized creature standing in the grass by the road; it looked like a round ball with three unique eyes on top. I recognized it as the Three-Eyed Leech.
"Damn, you can bark like a dog!" I exclaimed in surprise as the Three-Eyed Leech nodded human-like and barked again at me, completely shattering my worldview.
"Shit, I'm seeing ghosts!" I gulped nervously and took off running. I didn't want to get entangled with this Three-Eyed Leech; who knows what would happen.
I ran all the way to the vicinity of the reservoir and glanced back to see that the Three-Eyed Leech hadn't followed me. Only then did I breathe a sigh of relief.
Turning my attention back to the reservoir, I noticed it was brightly lit. The group of strong men from earlier stood around it with torches, vigilantly watching over the water.
Wu Jingye stood behind the Altar, holding a Dust Whisk in his left hand and a Peach Wood Sword in his right. He was chanting something under his breath while performing a ritual.
"This place is really lively!" I hid behind a nearby tree, not rushing in immediately; I wanted to see what tricks Wu Jingye had up his sleeve.
After a while, Wu Jingye finished his incantation. He used his Peach Wood Sword to lift a bowl from atop the Altar while swirling a stack of Talismans with his Dust Whisk. With a flick of his wrist above the bowl, those Talismans stood upright inside without moving.
Wu Jingye's movements flowed smoothly, looking incredibly cool. He bit the tip of his tongue and sprayed a mouthful of Tongue Blood into a bowl, reciting, "Through wind and rain in the world, thunder and lightning descend from the divine. Demons stir the storm, bringing calamity to humanity. I, disciple Wu Jingye, humbly bow to the Three Pure Ones above and pay respect to the Demon God below. I now beseech the divine to send down heavenly thunder to disperse the demon clouds."
"Thunder Talisman, command!" As soon as Wu Jingye finished speaking, the talisman in the bowl ignited spontaneously. The once empty porcelain bowl suddenly turned pitch black, with numerous cracks appearing on its surface.
A hint of joy appeared on Wu Jingye's face. Without any hesitation, he immediately threw the porcelain bowl into the air above the reservoir.
"Not good!" Seeing Wu Jingye's actions, I quickly covered my ears and hid behind a large tree. Just as I concealed myself, a loud bang echoed from above the reservoir, and I could vaguely sense a bolt of lightning striking within it.
"That sound is really loud!" I rubbed my ears and looked up at the sky, noticing that the dark clouds had vanished and the moon reappeared. Even the raindrops floating in mid-air began to lessen.
"This Wu Jingye has some skills after all!" Although I harbored resentment towards him, I still acknowledged his strength in my heart.
"Old Man, how dare you ruin my plans! I will kill you right now!" A hoarse roar suddenly erupted from the direction of the reservoir, prompting me to turn my head quickly.
I saw a towering monster appear by the reservoir. The creature emanated a powerful Corpse Qi that filled me with an oppressive feeling, stirring a sense of fear within me.
I swallowed hard and whispered, "Could this be the Drought Demon?"
