As soon as I finished speaking, the swarm of Corpse Worms charged towards me. They weren't particularly fast, but the sheer mass of them created a daunting sight.
"Of the thirty-six stratagems, fleeing is the best!" My scalp tingled with fear as I didn't dare to linger. I quickly retreated to the spot where I had descended earlier, grabbing the rope and preparing to climb back up.
I had just ascended a meter or two when I suddenly heard a strange noise beneath me. Unable to resist, I glanced down and saw a hand reaching out from inside a coffin, clawing its way out. Before long, a Figure emerged from within.
The Figure was completely covered in Corpse Worms, making it impossible for me to discern its features. Strangely, those Corpse Worms clung to the figure's body, motionless, as if they were asleep.
"Why aren't the Corpse Worms eating him?" I wondered, staring at the Figure in confusion.
"Stinky Taoist, we meet again!" The Figure looked at me with lifeless eyes and spoke in a hoarse voice.
I frowned, trying to recall anyone I had recently encountered, but I had no memory of this person. I scrutinized him and asked, "Have we met before?"
"Haha, Stinky Taoist, you should just die!" A glint of madness flashed in the Figure's eyes as he let out a maniacal laugh and lunged forward to grab my foot, attempting to pull me down.
"Not a chance!" Seeing the Figure reach for me, I immediately swung my Peach Wood Sword at him. The sword struck his hand but only smashed the Corpse Worms into mush, releasing a foul stench.
Realizing that my Peach Wood Sword hadn't harmed him, I swung it again at the same spot. This time, the sword finally made contact with his hand, slicing open a finger-length wound from which dark red liquid began to ooze.
"Ah! Get down here!" The Figure screamed in pain but did not release his grip. With a powerful tug, he yanked me off balance and I fell from the rope.
"Kill him!" The Figure stepped back a few paces and commanded the Corpse Worms on the ground to attack me.
As soon as I hit the ground, I saw the swarm of Corpse Worms closing in on me from just half a meter away. With the Figure interfering as well, there was no chance for me to retreat now.
"I'll deal with you later!" I shot a fierce glare at the Figure and quickly pulled out a stack of talismans from my pocket, arranging them into a circle around my feet.
"Ultimate Earth, Mystical Arts Have Methods, command!"
I cast Spell, igniting the talismans on the ground to form a Flame Circle that protected me in the center. Although these talismans couldn't kill the Corpse Worms, they could block them, preventing them from rushing in for the time being.
Corpse Worms were different from ghosts; first, Corpse Worms were living creatures, and second, they had a physical form. I could deal with ghosts using talismans, but ordinary Spells wouldn't work against Corpse Worms.
As I saw the group of Corpse Worms getting closer, a sense of pressure weighed heavily on my heart. Gritting my teeth, I glanced at the nearby Figure and said, "To catch a thief, first catch the king!"
The space around the well wasn't very large, so standing within the Flame Circle allowed me to confront that Figure.
I placed a talisman on my Peach Wood Sword, quickly casting a Spell with my right hand while chanting, "Upper Three Pure Ones, revered deities. Grant me your power to vanquish evil spirits. Three Pure Wind and Fire Talisman, command!"
Upon finishing the incantation, I bit my tongue and sprayed a mouthful of Tongue Blood onto the Peach Wood Sword. The talisman on the sword ignited spontaneously, instantly setting ablaze the Tongue Blood, enveloping the entire Peach Wood Sword in a blaze of Yang Fire.
"Go!" I hurled the Peach Wood Sword toward the shadowy figure. It transformed into a fireball as it flew toward the chest of that Figure.
"Hmph! You think you can scare me?" The Figure let out a disdainful snort, extending his hand to shake it. The Corpse Worms on his arm all gathered into his fist, forming a gauntlet.
"Break for me!" The Figure raised his fist and smashed it down onto the Peach Wood Sword. The two collided with a crackling sound. The sword struck the Corpse Worms, shattering half of them into mush while the remaining ones were roasted by the Yang Fire, producing sounds like popping beans.
"Ah! Break for me!" Seeing that his first attack had failed, the Figure used his other hand to punch down onto the Peach Wood Sword. It was already nearly depleted; another blow sent it flying away.
I wasn't surprised to see the Peach Wood Sword get knocked away; I had been preparing another killing move all along.
"Ultimate Earth, Xuanmen Daoist Arts. Divine beings of the Three Pure Ones, grant me your divine power to summon soldiers from beans. Summon Soldiers Technique, command!"
I pulled out a Money Sword, untied its red thread, and threw all the copper coins at that Figure.
"You won't survive this!" Although I felt a pang of regret as I lost another coin from my Money Sword, I had no choice.
Once thrown, those copper coins transformed into golden figures that surrounded the Figure, relentlessly attacking him.
"Ah!" The figure let out a terrible scream. He had been fighting against the group of golden figures, and the number of Corpse Worms on him was dwindling. After shattering all the golden figures, only a few Corpse Worms remained alive, revealing his true form before my eyes.
The figure looked extremely grotesque, covered in red and bloody patches, with pockmarked skin that seemed to have no flesh left, as if he had been flayed alive.
Seeing his appearance, a thought flashed through my mind, and I hesitantly asked, "Are you the physical body of Liu Xin?!"
"Haha, Stinky Taoist, you finally recognized me! But you're about to die too!" Liu Xin's physical body pointed at my feet. I looked down and realized that the Flame Circle behind me had been extinguished in one spot, allowing many Corpse Worms to surge in.
"Damn it!" I cursed under my breath and immediately used my nails to pierce my palm, letting blood drip onto the gap in the Flame Circle. Then I took out several talismans and placed them over the breach.
"Ultimate Earth, Mystical Arts Have Methods, command!"
I quickly formed a Hand Seal to ignite the talismans, barely managing to maintain the Flame Circle and keeping the other Corpse Worms at bay. After crushing all the Corpse Worms inside the Flame Circle, I assessed its condition and found that it could only hold for another two or three minutes at most.
"No way, I can't just sit here and wait for death!" I glanced at Liu Xin not far away, a fierce glint flashing in my eyes as I gritted my teeth and said, "Damn it, I'll fight back!"
"Liu Xin, you forced my hand!" I took out a Peach Wood Sword again, smeared my blood on it, and then affixed a Three Pure Wind and Fire Talisman onto the sword. Just as I was preparing to charge out and confront Liu Xin head-on, a sudden heat surged in my chest as if something was about to burst forth.
