About half an hour later, Jiang Bao led us to the back of the village, where Grave Hill stood. I knew that the eerie energy on Grave Hill was heavy, as all the deceased elders from the village were buried there.
Ever since I killed that snake demon in the Cemetery, I had developed a certain aversion to the environment of the Cemetery. Frowning, I walked over to Jiang Bao and asked, "Jiang Bao, I don't sense anything unusual around here. Are you sure that Drought Demon is nearby?!"
Jiang Bao took out a compass from his waist pouch and flicked the needle with his finger. " Brother Jiang Ling, take a close look at the compass's reaction!"
"What’s going on?!" I looked at the compass in Jiang Bao's hand and saw that the needle was spinning wildly without any sign of stopping.
The compass was a tool used for seeking spirits and detecting evil. The fact that its needle was constantly moving indicated a powerful Evil Spirit was nearby. The compass was being disturbed by the presence of this Evil Spirit, causing it to spin erratically.
Seeing the compass's behavior, I quickly activated my Yin-Yang Eyes and scanned around Grave Hill. However, after a thorough sweep, I found no signs of any ghosts.
I felt something was off; logically speaking, with such heavy eerie energy on Grave Hill, those spirits should prefer to linger here.
Frowning and stroking my chin, I muttered to myself, "This doesn’t make sense. Could it be because it's daytime that those spirits are hiding? But if they were hiding, the compass shouldn't react so strongly! Could it really be that Drought Demon causing this reaction?"
" Brother Jiang Ling, come help us look!" While I was lost in thought, Jiang Bao and Lu Jie had already started checking the tombstones one by one. With the compass rendered ineffective, we had no choice but to resort to this clumsy method.
I nodded and took out my Seven Star Mysterious Dragon Sword and some yellow paper from my backpack. "Jiang Bao, I'll start checking from this side. If I find anything, I'll let you know!"
"Six Ding Six Jia, gods of all directions! Grant me your divine power to seek ghosts and dispel evil! Three Pure Ones above, Spirit Seeking Talisman activate!" I dipped my finger in some cinnabar and swiftly wrote a ghost-seeking talisman on the yellow paper.
The Spirit Seeking Talisman had only one function: if an Evil Spirit was within one meter of it, it would ignite spontaneously.
"Let’s get to work!" Holding the Seven Star Mysterious Dragon Sword in my right hand and the freshly drawn Spirit Seeking Talisman in my left, I began checking each tombstone one by one.
After about an hour, the three of us had inspected all the tombstones on Grave Hill, even those hidden in its corners. Yet still, we found no trace of where the Evil Spirit might be hiding.
We sat down on the ground to take a break. At that moment, I glanced at the Spirit Seeking Talisman in my hand and confirmed there was nothing wrong with it. Confused, I looked at Jiang Bao and asked, "Jiang Bao, if that Drought Demon is really here, then the Spirit Seeking Talisman should have sensed it!"
"The fact that the Spirit Seeking Talisman hasn't reacted at all is too strange!"
"I'll try again!" Jiang Bao's face looked somewhat grim as he took out the compass and adjusted it, only to find that the needle continued to spin wildly.
Jiang Bao furrowed his brow and said, "There must be some powerful ghost hiding on Grave Hill; otherwise, the compass wouldn't behave like this!"
I turned to look at Lu Jie and asked, "Could it be that Lu Jie is affecting the compass's response?"
Lu Jie shot me a glare and replied, "Jiang Ling, what are you talking about? I don't have any Eerie Aura on me; otherwise, I wouldn't dare to be out in the sunlight!"
Jiang Bao interjected with a smile, "Brother Jiang Ling, you're overthinking it. Jie and I have worked on missions together; I know her situation well. Otherwise, I wouldn't be using the compass!"
Although I didn't fully believe Lu Jie's words, I had to accept Jiang Bao's assurance. I glanced around Grave Hill and remarked, "The Evil Spirit on Grave Hill is no ordinary one. It not only evaded my Yin-Yang Eyes but also managed to avoid the Spirit Seeking Talisman. This is truly unusual!"
Jiang Bao nodded and said, "You're right, Brother Jiang Ling. However, I can now confirm that this Evil Spirit is definitely not the Drought Demon we're looking for!"
Lu Jie looked at Jiang Bao in confusion and asked, "Why can't that Evil Spirit be the Drought Demon?"
Jiang Bao put away the compass and explained to Lu Jie, "The Drought Demon is a corpse that has cultivated into a spirit; regardless of how it manifests, there will always be a trace of Corpse Qi on it. If it were truly the Drought Demon, our Spirit Seeking Talisman would have reacted by now!"
Jiang Bao then looked at me and asked, "Brother Jiang Ling, since this Evil Spirit isn't the Drought Demon, should we continue searching?"
After thinking for a moment, I stood up from the ground and said, "Even though this Evil Spirit isn't the Drought Demon, leaving it on Grave Hill poses a threat to the village. It's better for us to deal with it!"
"Indeed, we can't just leave it be!" Jiang Bao nodded and asked, "Brother Jiang Ling, what should we do now?"
I shook my head and replied, "I don't have any good ideas either. How about we search one by one again?"
Upon hearing my suggestion, Lu Jie frowned and said, "That's too exhausting! I'm only here to eliminate the Drought Demon; if you want to search for it, I'll just wait here for you!"
With that, Lu Jie sat down on the ground to rest, showing no intention of continuing the search.
I felt a surge of annoyance at Lu Jie’s reaction. Just as I was about to scold her, Jiang Bao quickly grabbed my arm and said with a smile, “ Brother Jiang Ling, don’t bother with Jie. If she wants to rest, let her. The two of us can handle this!”
Jiang Bao pulled me away despite my glare. I shook off his hand and asked in confusion, “Jiang Bao, what’s so great about Lu Jie? Do you really like her that much?”
Jiang Bao chuckled awkwardly and replied, “Different strokes for different folks! I like Lu Jie’s personality, and besides, her skills are top-notch! I wouldn’t want to break up with her!”
“You have such low standards!” I shot him a look, and the two of us resumed inspecting the graves on Grave Hill.
This time, Jiang Bao and I didn’t use the Spirit Seeking Talisman to probe; instead, we observed the entire environment of Grave Hill with our eyes. No matter how strange that Evil Spirit was, if it was hiding on Grave Hill, it would surely leave some traces behind.
After searching for over ten minutes, we finally discovered an unusual grave in a corner of Grave Hill.
Our village was currently suffering from a drought, so logically, the weeds on top of the graves should have been nearly wilted from the sun.
However, this particular grave was completely different; the weeds on it looked just like they always did. Moreover, a patch of yellow and white wildflowers grew on top of the grave, creating a stark contrast with the surrounding graves.
Jiang Bao stared at that grave and took out a Peach Wood Sword from his waist pouch. He nudged me with his elbow and asked, “ Brother Jiang Ling, do you see that?”
I nodded and tightened my grip on the Seven Star Mysterious Dragon Sword. I gave Jiang Bao a knowing glance and said, “Let’s go check it out!”
