"Step aside! I can handle this myself!" Qu Liang shouted defiantly, ready to charge forward.
I felt a headache coming on and quickly blocked her path. I exchanged glances with Qian Duoduo and smiled, saying, "Qian, the beautiful lady, there's no need for you to get involved with such minor characters. Just stand by and watch!"
Qian Duoduo understood my hint immediately and rushed over with a big grin, grabbing Qu Liang's arm and flattering her, "Qu Liang, just watch from the side. If anything unexpected happens, you can always make a grand entrance!"
Although Qu Liang knew we were buttering her up, her expression softened considerably. She nodded and stepped back with Qian Duoduo.
I held the Peach Wood Sword firmly, my expression serious as I stared at the Jade Buddha before me.
The Seven Star Soul Locking Formation was specifically designed to seal spirits and monsters. Even though Qu Liang couldn't unleash its full power, the fact that this Jade Buddha could so easily break through the formation indicated it was no ordinary being.
"Woo~~" The Jade Buddha floated in the air, emitting an eerie crying sound as a fist-sized Ghost Fire flickered back to life around it.
"Stop your tricks! Break!" I snorted coldly and swung the Peach Wood Sword at the Jade Buddha, dispersing the Ghost Fire in one strike.
"Come out!" Seizing the moment while the Ghost Fire was gone, I pinned the Jade Buddha down with my Peach Wood Sword. Then I bit my fingertip and drew a Talisman in my palm.
"Ultimate Earth, Mystical Arts Have Methods! Soul Binding Talisman, command!" I slapped the Talisman onto the Jade Buddha. A golden light radiated from my palm as my right hand passed through the Jade Buddha, pulling out a ghostly figure.
The ghost's true form was that of an elderly monk in his fifties or sixties. Though he had transformed into a Spirit Ghost, he still emanated a Golden Buddha Light from his head. By his appearance, he must have been a High Monk in life.
As I looked at the old monk's face, it seemed somewhat familiar, but I couldn't quite place him at that moment.
Sensing no malice from him, I sheathed my Peach Wood Sword and politely asked, "High Monk, may I know your name?"
The old monk pressed his palms together in a gesture of respect and replied, "This humble monk's Dharma name is Zhen Ding."
"You are Zhen Ding, the High Monk?!" My mouth dropped open in surprise as realization hit me; I finally remembered where I had seen this monk before.
Seven years ago, before I left Spirit Ghost Street, Zhen Ding's spirit had visited my master's shop after his death, seeking help to deal with a five-hundred-year-old snake demon.
I recalled how my master had kicked me out of the shop to talk with Master Zhen Ding for quite some time; what happened afterward was beyond my knowledge.
"Jiang Ling, do you know this monk?" Qu Liang asked curiously as she walked over to me, eyeing Zhen Ding's ghostly form.
I nodded and said, "I met you a long time ago."
"Jiang Benefactor, seven years ago, I had a fateful encounter with you!" Zhen Ding looked at me with a smile, "I left behind a fragment of my soul just to wait for you to fulfill the promise made between me and your master seven years ago!"
I was completely confused; I had never heard of any promise from my master. I asked, "What promise?"
Zhen Ding's expression remained cheerful as he shook his head, "No! No!"
I shot Zhen Ding an annoyed glance, thinking that if he wasn't going to tell me, I didn't want to know either. However, I was curious; could it be that the strange occurrences on the Jade Buddha were all orchestrated by Zhen Ding just to draw me out? But how could he have known I would come here?
I glanced at Zhen Ding, suspecting that I might have been schemed against by my master seven years ago. The thought of my master's extraordinary foresight gave me a headache.
Sighing, I said, "Zhen Ding, High Monk, were those tricks you pulled earlier meant to test my abilities?"
Zhen Ding nodded with a smile, "I just wanted to confirm whether you are as formidable as your master!"
I was quite confident in my own skills. Touching my ear, I asked with a grin, "So how did it go? Did I disappoint you?"
Zhen Ding shook his head, "If this is all the skill you possess, then the task I need to entrust to you will surely lead you to death!"
I knew that monks do not speak falsely, but hearing about certain death made my smile freeze. Although I hadn't used all my strength, Zhen Ding's words hinted that what lay ahead would be extremely dangerous.
I was still young and a pure virgin; I certainly didn't want to die yet. Embarrassed, I touched my ear and forced a smile, "Zhen Ding, High Monk, since I'm not capable enough, why not call my master to fulfill the promise?!"
As soon as I finished speaking, I turned to walk away. At that moment, Zhen Ding's voice came from behind me: "Jiang Benefactor, your master once said that if you ever intended to back down, let me kill you! Now it's time for you to die!"
Zhen Ding's voice was chillingly different from before. When I looked back, I found that the originally golden Buddha light emanating from Zhen Ding had changed.
Zhen Ding's face twisted into a grimace; he radiated a Black Ghostly Aura and exuded an extremely dangerous presence, like a volcano ready to erupt at any moment.
"Has he turned into a demon?!" I exclaimed in surprise. The term 'turning into a demon' refers to those enlightened High Monks who lose their way due to errant thoughts and become vengeful spirits. The Zhen Ding before me had already succumbed to this fate.
"You all run! I'll handle him!" Seeing Qu Liang and Qian Duoduo escape from the shop, I drew my Peach Wood Sword again and cautiously watched the now transformed Vengeful Spirit Zhen Ding.
"Ha ha, go die!" Zhen Ding laughed loudly, his body flashing as he appeared behind me, throwing a punch towards my head.
I sensed the danger and immediately dodged to the side. Zhen Ding's fist grazed my right cheek, leaving a long gash that bled.
Wiping the blood from my face, anger flared in my eyes. "Damn it, you really want to do this! Just watch me beat you into a daze!"
I took out a blank talisman paper and drew a talisman with my own blood. Then I affixed the talisman to my Peach Wood Sword. I unleashed several spells and shouted, "Ultimate Earth, Mystical Arts Have Methods! Talisman, exterminate the ghosts, command!"
The talisman ignited without fire, a white light merging into my Peach Wood Sword. I felt a surge of vital energy emanating from the sword, boosting my confidence.
"Break for me!" I dashed towards Zhen Ding, swinging the Peach Wood Sword at his neck.
With a crack, my Peach Wood Sword snapped in two, but Zhen Ding's neck was only slightly scratched.
I tossed the broken pieces of the Peach Wood Sword onto Zhen Ding and stepped back a few paces, cursing Qian Duoduo's ancestors in my mind. I shouted outside, "Qian Duoduo, you idiot! Isn't this a Peach Wood Sword made from thirty-year-old Thunder-Struck Peach Tree?!"
Qian Duoduo outside sheepishly scratched his head and replied, "I heard it from Taobao too!"
I felt a wave of frustration but had no time to settle accounts with Qian Duoduo because Zhen Ding charged at me again.
