Sunlight streamed through the tall floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a warm glow across the spacious banquet hall. The crystal chandelier refracted dazzling light, adding a touch of brilliance to the lavish occasion. I stood in the corner, quietly observing a world that I did not fully belong to. As an adopted child, I always felt out of place within this family.
"You worthless adopted girl, how dare you show up at an event like this?" Su Liyan approached, her voice sharp and piercing, breaking my reverie. She wore an extravagant gown, her makeup flawless, but the disdain in her eyes was impossible to ignore.
"Why shouldn't I be here?" I replied calmly, though turmoil churned within me; my tone remained steady.
"You, an adopted girl, have no right to stand here," Su Liyan's voice grew even sharper as she scrutinized me from head to toe, as if searching for something to mock.
"Am I really just an adopted girl?" I scoffed; I had heard that label countless times before, and each time it felt like a needle piercing my heart.
"Absolutely," Su Liyan answered smugly, clearly relishing her superior position.
"How can you call me that?" My voice carried anger; this was my breaking point. I would not allow anyone to insult me like this.
"Isn't it true?" Su Liyan retorted defiantly, her gaze filled with provocation and contempt.
"You better clarify your words." My displeasure was evident; I didn't want to endure her unreasonable antics any longer.
"What’s unclear about it?" Su Liyan dismissed me with a wave of her hand, seemingly indifferent to my feelings.
"Why do you give me such an insulting nickname?" I questioned, knowing that this name had become my label within this family—one I never wanted.
"Insulting? I think it fits perfectly," Su Liyan said triumphantly, showing no concern for the pain it caused me.
"You..." I glared at her, my anger boiling over. I felt my patience had reached its limit.
"What about me?" Su Liyan asked provocatively, as if enjoying this power play.
"Why do you treat me like this?" My voice was filled with inquiry; I wanted to understand her motives.
"What have I done to you?" Su Liyan replied dismissively, seemingly unaware of any wrongdoing on her part.
"You've been talking behind my back and making me uncomfortable..." I accused. I knew all these things but had never confronted her directly before.
"That's what you deserve," Su Liyan said smugly, as if she believed her actions were justified.
"Why do you do this to me?" My voice trembled with sadness; I sought to understand her reasoning.
"Because you're a worthless adopted girl and because you've taken my father's attention away from me," Su Liyan spat resentfully, her eyes brimming with anger and jealousy.
"So that's why you treat me this way?" I asked sorrowfully. I couldn't comprehend why she would act like this towards me simply because I was adopted.
"Yes," Su Liyan admitted without hesitation, showing no sign of remorse for her behavior.
"You've gone too far." I said angrily, feeling my heart bleed. This family—the place I once thought I could rely on—now made me feel so lonely and helpless.
"I've gone too far, what can you do about it?" Su Liyan said provocatively, seemingly indifferent to my feelings and thoughts.
"I..." I looked at her, determined to say that I no longer wanted to be bullied by her. I needed to stand up and defend myself.
"Go on, say it," Su Liyan taunted arrogantly, as if waiting to see me make a fool of myself.
I took a deep breath, knowing I could not back down any longer. I needed to face her, this family, and the reality I had been avoiding. I lifted my head and met her gaze directly, my voice steady and strong: "Su Liyan, you are wrong. I am not a worthless adopted daughter; I am a member of this family. I may not share your blood, but I have love and dignity. Your actions will only make me stronger, while you will only become more isolated within this family."
Su Liyan was taken aback; she hadn't expected me to fight back like this. A flicker of panic crossed her eyes, quickly replaced by anger. She turned and walked away without another word. I knew this battle had just begun, but I was no longer afraid. I would face everything bravely, for myself and for those who loved me.
The music in the banquet hall resumed, and people continued to chat and laugh as if nothing had happened. But I knew my life had changed. I was no longer the bullied adopted daughter; I was someone with my own stance and dignity. I would find my place in this family in my own way.
