The guns split into seven paths, striking out in a bizarre manner. The foremost Cat King, upon seeing the attack, spun his body fiercely. The fire dragon was transformed into a swirling vortex of flames by his rotation, generating a massive force of heat that pushed them completely aside.
If the previous attack had continued as planned, Zheng Yifan's strikes would have only landed a couple of hits, failing to inflict any fatal damage.
This was utterly impossible.
Yet, the seven misfired shots appeared strangely at the positions where they were attacking, an unbelievable event akin to divine intervention. Zheng Yifan's next four shots accurately pierced their skulls, penetrating from their eyes into their brains. The other wildcats collided repeatedly, truly impacting one another, and then Divine Intervention placed their heads right in the path of Zheng Yifan's spear.
What followed was a gruesome scene; there was no other possibility. Five seconds passed in an instant, even wasted in a single yawn.
But on the battlefield, those moments determined life and death. Seven wildcats lay dead, their demise tragic. It took more than five minutes before Ten Thousand Steps dared to approach. By this time, Zheng Yifan had already scrutinized the corpses of the wildcats and stored their cores in his Storage Space. This caught the attention of Ten Thousand Steps' Fellow, who insisted on taking two back for research purposes. Zheng Yifan wanted to keep some for future use in other research fields.
Using them was acceptable, but he absolutely could not distribute them now; who knew what greater purposes they might serve?
"Boss! Can we claim these big cats' bodies?" The scientists behind him were unconcerned with such matters. These mutated wildcats were of a caliber they had never encountered before. There had been a stir in Ancheng when someone hunted a single rat; now there were eight massive wildcats. How could this not ignite some research ambitions among them?
These corpses held immense research value; extracting DNA samples could reveal the reasons behind their mutations.
They could potentially make humanity stronger and create biological weapons without considering the consequences. In the Apocalyptic World, there wasn't much time for such considerations; all that mattered was powerful combat capability.
"Do whatever you want, just don’t delay our schedule. We’ll rest for two hours at a motel or a local house outside the highway before heading back onto it. There won’t be many places to rest along the way, especially with an unknown number of zombies and unknown enemies lurking. So be cautious," Zheng Yifan said casually as he began observing other areas.
The Avatar of the Believers was nearly transparent now; Zheng Yifan's superpower was severely depleted. That feeling of fortune was peculiar, but he knew it was fleeting—five seconds might only last until this moment. However, as fortune grew larger, luck would improve too; eventually, he wouldn’t need to rely on fortune to become incredibly lucky—just tripping over something could lead him to find money.
"Hehe! Boss, you’re sitting on a treasure mountain without realizing it. The stuff on these wildcats is extraordinary," Ten Thousand Steps exclaimed as he rushed to inspect the wildcat corpses.
"Look at these claws; they’re definitely materials for divine weapons. They can be decomposed or inscribed in ways I don’t even know to forge something remarkable. At the very least, they’re far superior to existing metals. And these pelts can be used to create new types of Leather Armor—this is all good stuff! If you don’t want them, we’ll take them!" A dozen scientists drooled over the corpses like otaku who hadn’t seen beautiful women in ages, nearly letting their saliva drip onto the ground.
Zheng Yifan looked at them helplessly. "Take as much as you want, but I must remind you that our journey ahead is several hundred miles long. Carrying everything yourself is a must; don't expect me to help you with that!"
He didn't care whether the items were truly valuable or not. If a few scientists were to drop something, he could immediately store it in his Storage Space. If they were willing to bear the burden, then let them carry it; after all, Zheng Yifan had enough food to keep them going, and he wasn't worried about tiring them out.
They were all Superpowered Individuals, after all, different from ordinary people.
"Thank you, Leader! We're not fools; can we take everything? Each wildcat can carry its own Claw. At most, we can skin them, but as for the bones, there's no real use for them. Let's leave them here to feed other beasts," Ten Thousand Steps said. Though he appeared generous, he was inwardly cringing at the sight of the corpses on the ground. The speed at which the scientists worked was nothing short of Butchering an Ox—so fast it was shocking. Zheng Yifan could hardly keep up and could only marvel silently while quietly collecting other resources, like the nearby Essence Fruits. They were everywhere, like weeds; others might not find them useful, but for Zheng Yifan, they could turn into treasures. The Essence Fruits could be transformed into A-Level Essence, increasing their value by thousands of times. Just five of them could yield a bottle of A-Level Essence, equivalent to one Superpowered Individual.
This was undoubtedly the best deal in the world.
About twenty minutes passed, and the Scientists were sweating profusely while Zheng Yifan gradually ventured deeper into the forest. He felt completely at ease with these scientists; two Avatars of the Believers stood guard beside them like gatekeepers, ready to inform Zheng Yifan of any impending danger.
As they moved further into the woods, Zheng Yifan noticed more and more Essence Fruits around him, as if countless temptations were continuously enticing him.
If he kept picking them, it seemed he could do so forever without any change.
However, things in this world often take unexpected turns. Just as Zheng Yifan was frantically searching for Essence Fruits and striking it rich, a sudden cat's meow echoed through the forest.
"Meow!" The sound of a wildcat was faintly heard among the trees—not the wild howl of a big cat but rather the sound of a cat searching for food.
Zheng Yifan recognized that sound; there was no hint of malice or madness from the wildcat—just an adorable meow reminiscent of a Post-Apocalypse cat.
His treasure-hunting thoughts were instantly interrupted as a warm feeling surged in his heart. The eight wildcats he had just killed were actually protecting their young ones. No wonder they fought so fiercely; they cared little for their own safety and only wished to eliminate Zheng Yifan to reduce the danger to their offspring.
That was a wildcat's love—a love for its children.
"Alas!" Zheng Yifan could only sigh helplessly. He had already killed, what more could he do? All he felt now was a sense of regret.
The kittens were about to become orphans, losing their parents in this apocalyptic environment where survival was far from guaranteed.
With a tinge of guilt and sorrow in his heart, Zheng Yifan pushed aside the bushes and slowly made his way to the source of the sound.
It was a tree, a short and stout one that looked weak and fragile. However, hanging from it was a fruit that left Zheng Yifan in shock—a watermelon-sized Essence Fruit. It appeared unique, clearly different from ordinary Essence Fruits. The entire fruit emitted a smell reminiscent of Durian, nearly overwhelming Zheng Yifan.
Despite this, he was still excited as he gazed at the fruit; it represented the potential to add a powerful ally to the Gathering Place. A true powerhouse!
Cautiously observing the three kittens mewing in their nest atop the short tree, his heart filled with affection. He gently extended a finger and poked the plumpest one.
"Meow!" The kitten let out a soft cry, stretching its mouth toward Zheng Yifan's thumb and sucking vigorously. After several seconds of fruitless effort to extract any milk, it could only mewl pitifully.
In that moment, Zheng Yifan felt his heart melt. If he left these kittens here, they would surely meet a tragic end; they could starve to death without any chance of survival.
"Babies, shall I take you with me?" Zheng Yifan teased the kittens with his finger. Seeing they showed no resistance, he gathered them into his arms.
Naturally, he wouldn't leave behind the large watermelon-sized fruit either. Zheng Yifan deftly plucked it from the tree and tossed it into his Storage Space.
With three kittens nestled in his arms, he no longer sought other Essence Fruits. Instead, he walked along while playfully interacting with the fluffy little creatures.
Zheng Yifan couldn't tell which one was the oldest or youngest; they could even be sisters or brothers.
He simply pointed at the largest kitten, which had several black spots on its forehead, and said, "From now on, you will be their leader. Your name will be Big Fur."
Then, he gently patted another adorable cat with a heavier pattern on its face and said, "As for you, looking this cute, from now on, you'll be called Ermao. Did you hear that?"
He pointed to the pure white cat and continued, "Poor thing, from now on you will be known as Youngest. Let's call you Sanmao, okay?"
Zheng Yifan amused himself by naming the three cats before carefully checking their genders.
To be honest, Big Fur and Ermao were both so small that they resembled tiny grains of rice; if one didn't look closely, it would be impossible to find them.
As for Sanmao, she was a female, but how exactly he figured that out...
Aha! Zheng Yifan would definitely not tell anyone.
After confirming the genders of the three cats, he held them close and returned to the group of scientists.
Standing about several dozen meters away, Zheng Yifan waited patiently for them to finish their work.
It wasn't until everything was cleaned up that he called out loudly, "Everyone come over here! All the items you've collected must be turned in; no private keeping allowed. Once we return to Hope Gathering Place, we will distribute them according to the records."
Now Big Fur, Ermao, and Sanmao were present. If he placed the corpses of eight wild cats in front of them, it would be too cruel. They could only be stored in Storage Space. (To be continued...)
