Death loomed like a nightmare, enveloping a few lackeys who scattered like birds in the span of a second. The Glass Wall offered no protection against the terrifying arrows; they could only seek refuge in the women’s quarters.
Regardless of what was happening inside, they dropped to the ground, ignoring whatever filth might be on it.
In the office, the women didn’t care whether it was on the bed or the floor; any space was their battlefield, every morsel of food and money at stake.
Now, with these Fellows stirring up trouble, a few obstinate ones simply put on their pants and left. They didn’t care about anything else; chaos reigned outside, order had vanished, and they no longer needed to pay for their services.
No one was that generous, especially not towards them. Two taels of grain could trade for quite a bit; a night of indulgence was also an option for entertainment.
Changing floors could yield two bags of snacks or a single bag of chips. Those were still good items—replenishing salt in the body helped prevent many diseases.
As for vitamin tablets? Don’t even dream about it. They were sold by the piece, each one costly and definitely not something that could be exchanged for just a few taels of grain.
The crowd was chaotic, with opportunists lurking everywhere, stealing and taking advantage of the situation.
Zhang Wei and his group had already dispersed amidst the turmoil; they had enough supplies and didn’t need to cling to Zheng Yifan’s leg. They couldn’t afford to either.
Not understanding others could lead to becoming live bait. You wouldn’t even know how you died. There was no mercy in this apocalypse; those who became Superpowered Individuals would show no compassion. Every Essence Fruit was stained with blood.
One person walked away nonchalantly as the entire eleventh floor descended into chaos; no one noticed when an extra person appeared—they were focused on protecting their own possessions.
The girl cradled in his arms remained deeply asleep, her complexion improving significantly as a hint of rosy color began to emerge.
At that moment, Zheng Yifan gently fed her a few sips of Fresh Milk from his lips.
“What are you doing! What are you doing! You dare touch my shop! Do you want to die?” A burly man with a bushy beard emerged from an office near the Emergency Exit, flanked by several armored individuals at the door.
The clothing they wore could barely be considered armor. Inside, it was padded with down jackets, while the outside consisted of iron plates cut from sheets of metal, sewn together with great effort.
This was the attire worn by the warriors on the upper floors of the Telecom Building.
Each person was a Superpowered Individual. Here, Zombies were not particularly formidable. However, there were many Superpowered Individuals; otherwise, they would have no chance of surviving in the city.
The Hope Gathering Place housed tens of thousands of Superpowered Individuals, each engaged in training. The vast majority of these Superpowered Individuals were First-Level Espers, striving for improvement, uncertain of when they might level up.
But that was fine; this place had the most Essence Fruits. In the Post-Apocalypse, most plants cultivated by families had turned into Mutated Plants, and Zombies often passed by them. Then they would suddenly attack, absorbing the essence from the Zombies.
Almost every city had such places; it was just that this city had a relatively larger number of Mutated Plants.
After all, this area was a Tourist City before the apocalypse. The number of botanical gardens was significant, and the title of Ecological City was certainly not given lightly.
“Get out here and kneel! No noise! No ruckus! Wait for the new Administrator’s orders!” a loud roar echoed. As those warriors appeared, several delicate women knelt down.
They had no intention of defying orders. Anyone who dared to resist would face suppression.
At the Emergency Exit, on the eleventh floor, was the largest den of smoke and powder. The Boss of Bai Cui Pavilion was not a woman but a bearded man.
His face was adorned with patches of lipstick color among his thick beard. The women behind him looked proudly at the warriors in front, showing no fear; behind that bearded man, they felt safe enough. That was all that mattered.
“Boss Hu! Orders have come down from above; we must clear everyone from the streets! No rebellion allowed, no riots permitted!” The warrior at the front slammed his weapon against the wall, causing a shower of wood chips to fall.
“I’m giving you face. All you girls, sit down and watch what tricks they pull,” Boss Hu instructed everyone to sit while he stood outside, grinning as he observed the soldiers outside.
That smile carried a hint of mockery.
No one had witnessed the specifics of this battle. The so-called City Hunter, a Fellow who roamed throughout the city, had once again strengthened his Superpower, which had undoubtedly reached the Second Tier; otherwise, he would not possess such formidable lethality.
During the fight, what surprised him the most was that Fellow who was holding a girl. The battle unfolded rapidly, and many missed certain scenes, particularly that Fellow who, while cradling the girl, dodged the arrows shot by the City Hunter.
It was a feeling of effortless grace.
"Girl, Star, eat something before you sleep."
In an office, Zheng Yifan leaned against the edge of a bed, gently patting the girl's cheek. The exhausted girl struggled to muster her last bit of strength to open her eyes, and there before her was Zheng Yifan's face.
"Ah!" A brief moment of surprise and fear followed as two tears slowly rolled down her cheeks. They were tears of pain; her mother was undoubtedly dead. In her fading consciousness, she had already come to know this news.
The sweet scent from his lips attracted her, urging her to suckle more forcefully. The milk was pure and devoid of any additives, filled with a delightful sweetness.
She blinked hazily and continued to drink the milk. It wasn't until she finished a cup that Zheng Yifan fed her a few spoonfuls of porridge.
It was the softest porridge, brought back from the real world by Zheng Yifan. With ample supplies at his disposal, he could freely choose suitable food.
The girl chewed each bite slowly, choking back sobs as she leaned her head against Zheng Yifan's embrace with every mouthful. She savored it delicately.
"Sleep now! Just a little more rest, and you'll regain some strength soon," Zheng Yifan said, making her feel as if she were already in heaven.
The girl blinked her bright eyes at Zheng Yifan, unable to take them off the bowl in his hands for even a moment.
"I'll let you have a couple more sips, but you absolutely can't overdo it! Otherwise, your heart might burst."
Zheng Yifan couldn't resist the girl's sparkling gaze. While humming a soft tune, he scooped up some porridge and fed it to her. After a few more bites filled with endless sighs of affection, he finally pulled back.
In the apocalypse, human life was as fragile as grass. The girl, in the prime of her youth, was on the brink of death. If it weren't for him, she would surely have perished.
He lay back, gazing at the yellowed magazines plastered on the ceiling. Zheng Yifan had no idea where his Hope Gathering Place was; all he knew was that he was in a city. By now, he still hadn't obtained a reliable name for this place, and the few people he had met were too few to ask before they had already scattered.
Now, only this one girl remained by his side.
Judging by the temperature here, there was a significant difference between the two places. From the high-rise buildings, he couldn't see the terrain or landscape, but it was definitely not an economically developed inland area.
The closer one got to the south, the more developed the economy and the larger the population. Therefore, Zheng Yifan needed to determine his exact location and find a way back to the Hope Gathering Place.
He quietly waited for changes outside while taking a moment to rest himself. Once he figured out where he was, he would begin exploring for the Hope Gathering Place.
The two of them lay diagonally on the bed; outside, the sunlight was even more dazzling than usual, pouring into the Telecom Building. It cast brilliant rays of light throughout the room, stretching their shadows long and connecting them tightly to the ground.
"Girl, do you miss your mother?"
They had never spoken before in this place full of strangers. Zheng Yifan felt as if the whole world was foreign to him; it was too far from where he used to live.
Unable to help himself, Zheng Yifan decided to share his thoughts with this girl who had just regained a bit of strength.
At least she was still by his side; she was all he could rely on.
At first, the girl said nothing, burying her head and breathing heavily as if clinging to life. She struggled against her frail body to say something, but in the end, only weak groans escaped her lips before she fell silent again.
She drifted back into a deep sleep.
"People inside, get out and kneel! Prepare to welcome the Administrator sent from above! No spreading rumors or provoking any authority within the Telecom Building!" Two soldiers at the door slammed their long knives against the walls of the room with force, creating two large holes.
"Get out. Don't make me unhappy," Zheng Yifan said fiercely. In this world, there are always villains to deal with villains. Since others are not the bad guys, he would take on that role himself.
As for kneeling, Zheng Yifan would never stoop to that. In his homeland, a man's knees are worth gold; one kneels only to parents and elders, but never to nobility.
"You little brat, where do you think you're coming from? How dare you speak to us like that? The people from the Telecom Building and Gathering Place are among the top powers in Ancheng. You really want to stir up trouble!" Two warriors at the entrance swung their long knives directly at Zheng Yifan.
They didn’t care what Zheng Yifan was doing; they would kill him first and investigate later. As for what they would find, it would mostly be leftover supplies—no one cared about his identity.
"I'll give you one last chance. If you don't take it, you won't be able to eat anything ever again," Zheng Yifan said, pointing at the two with his left hand, his gaze exceptionally cold.
"Do you think we two Superpowered Individuals can be scared by a little brat like you? That's a joke," one of them scoffed. The long knives in their hands twisted into strange shapes, intertwining as if they were preparing to unleash their superpowers to take down Zheng Yifan.
"You're really asking for trouble," Zheng Yifan said with a faint smile. He swung his left hand fiercely, and the Adamantium Shield flew out from his Storage Space at lightning speed. After their weapons intertwined, fine strands shot toward Zheng Yifan. If he got entangled in them, escaping would be difficult.
It was as if human hair was incredibly tough; these strands were even more resilient. When they collided with the Adamantium Shield, electricity coursed through the strands, and the wind blades continuously sliced through the fine threads launched by the two Superpowered Individuals.
"Go for it!" the two shouted loudly.
But it was useless; Zheng Yifan didn’t even bother to look at them, merely watching them struggle in vain.
With a tearing sound like ripping fabric, the strands attempted to intercept Zheng Yifan's Adamantium Shield but slowly began to shatter.
"Please! Please spare us! Our supplies are yours! We’re Superpowered Individuals from the fifteenth floor; I still have over 470 pounds of rice left! It’s all yours!" one of the Superpowered Individuals shouted desperately, fearing he wouldn’t have enough supplies left.
The other Superpowered Individual tried to maintain his bravado. If they were killed, their assets would naturally belong to the killer. As for justice or judgment—there was none. Bullying Common Survivors was easy and enjoyable; even an ordinary Superpowered Individual could bind them up and drain them dry before killing them.
Facing an unbeatable opponent for the first time, both of them were filled with dread, not expecting this person to be so formidable.
"If you two are willing to be my subordinates, I might consider sparing your lives," Zheng Yifan calculated. Having two local powerhouses on his side would certainly be convenient.
Only he and that frail girl had many questions unanswered, and he had no idea how to return to the Hope Gathering Place.
"Let me take your Superpowers!" Zheng Yifan said lightly, as the power of the Adamantium Shield began to wane. He genuinely wanted to give the two a chance at survival.
The two were not stubborn hardliners; in this apocalypse, few could truly control their fate. Since serving someone was merely a way to survive, there was no need to risk their lives for it.
Moreover, while others might face a dead-end, for them, it was simply a case of throwing meat buns to dogs.
"Thank you! Thank you for sparing our lives!" they quickly nodded and bowed, appearing servile.
"You seem quite skilled at this. Now I need to ask you: why did you make everyone kneel outside, and what is that so-called new Administrator?" Zheng Yifan continued to regard them with some caution.
The two quickly stepped back against the wall, placing their hands by their sides, having discarded their weapons in the center of the room.
This was a way to dispel any murderous intent from Zheng Yifan. They realized they could not defeat him, so they unconditionally chose to surrender in order to save their lives. Otherwise, it would surely lead to their demise.
