Killing intent surged like a rainbow as Zheng Yifan charged forward. Behind him, the Sword and Shield Bearers advanced cautiously, but most of the enemies ahead were already restrained. The Crossbowmen on both flanks ensured that the Zombies' attack range was limited. Shadows of Zombies began to appear on the steep slopes on either side, but the entire formation had already pushed deep into the resort.
Any Zombie attempting to leap forward from the steep slope behind fell to the ground like rolling gourds, only to be met by countless long spears. The warriors behind had no chance to engage with the Zombies; due to the formation, they had to maintain a relatively dense line.
"Military Merit has finally arrived!" The warriors behind excitedly dispatched the Zombies on the ground, while ordinary civilians who had been recruited helped clear away the Zombie Crystal s. They then passed the Zombie Crystal s back to those recording Military Merits, ensuring that credit was given to the warriors who had slain them.
After killing a Zombie, warriors simply needed to stick their personal stickers onto the Zombie's body; there was no way for Military Merit to escape.
The battle continued. Thanks to Zheng Yifan's bravery, he naturally led everyone forward, and more and more Zombies fell before them.
At the front, Zheng Yifan gradually felt the pressure lessen as the warriors behind caught up and dealt with all the Zombies on either side.
The opposing Zombies still formed a dark mass, but Zheng Yifan's mood was clearly very good. After comprehending the technique Wildfire Spreading, Low-Level Zombies were losing their deterrent power.
Using his limited Vital Energy, he drew upon the Vital Energy of the earth, like Wildfire Spreading—tiny sparks igniting a vast wilderness.
This was definitely not something someone of Lin Chong's caliber could comprehend; however, it was a technique incorporated into the Lin Family Spear Technique.
In Lin Chong's hands, it held little practical use.
In that era, it could be considered an age of diminished magic; Vital Energy was naturally not as abundant as during the Qin and Han dynasties or the Three Kingdoms period. Thus, Wildfire Spreading had lost its true power.
Now, with the apocalypse upon them, Vital Energy erupted forth more abundantly than in ancient times. Ordinary people consuming Essence Fruits derived from special plants could become Superpowered Individuals; those formidable techniques naturally found their purpose once again.
Zheng Yifan wielded his spear like a raging sea dragon; flames were akin to crashing waves. The fallen Zombies were scorched dry by fire and sent flying Zombie Crystal s by Vital Energy.
A Second-Level Zombie had no chance to retaliate; its powerful attack rendered Scorpion Tail ineffective mid-air.
The extended range and spreading fire dragon invigorated the warriors behind. This was the power of a Superpowered Individual. They too had a chance to become such strong beings—though it would take time and they might not be as powerful as their leader—there was still hope for them all.
Almost at the same moment, they thought of the mysterious S-Class Essence and SS-Level Essence on the Military Merit Exchange Table.
Such valuable items were not even a single bottle available in the entire Gathering Place; they only existed in legends. Surely, the leader must be using this level of Essence, right?
Zheng Yifan, however, had no time to answer them. His path of evolution was almost identical to that of using Essence, but he had added techniques and found it easier to gain power.
While others were still waiting for plants to produce Essence, he could directly use the Time-Space Barrier to devour Zombie Crystal s for evolution.
At present, he was merely a Second-Stage Esper, even inferior to the Ice King, let alone that mysterious Enhanced Esper.
Ahead, the vast resort was his preparation for laying the foundation for the future. Next, he needed to find a way to acquire a large amount of Essence to generate more Superpowered Individuals within the Gathering Place.
Even without High-Level Superpowered individuals or evolved Essences, there was still hope.
“Roar!” The Zombie's roar continued as the battle lines slowly stretched. The roads on both sides became increasingly flat, and the warriors at the rear had already engaged in close combat with Zombies on both flanks. Now they truly felt how terrifying the endless Zombies were.
Each warrior had to take down at least ten or even dozens of Zombies to clear all those in front of them, while in the distance, there were even more Zombies.
These Zombies were mostly left behind during the escape from Hansui City and had now become their greatest obstacle.
“We’ve already obtained over ten thousand Zombie Crystal s; there are indeed a lot of Zombies here!” The team responsible for tallying Military Merit was growing larger and harder to manage. The fighting ahead was too intense; with only four hundred people total facing hundreds of times more enemies, it was incredibly challenging.
With over ten thousand Zombie Crystal s and even two Third-Stage Soul Crystals among them, the total count was already astonishing.
They did not fully understand the use of Zombie Crystal s; they only knew that burying them while farming could increase crop yields.
However, Zheng Yifan had already ordered a large stockpile and aimed to consolidate all Zombie Crystal markets.
In the Gathering Place, the Merchant Group was slowly taking shape, venturing outside to collect Zombie Crystal s.
This was a battle without gunpowder, all aimed at gathering resources. They traded food and daily necessities, but weapons were strictly prohibited from sale.
"Leader's Heart, we are starting to use incendiary devices!" the Messenger shouted from behind, urging Zheng Yifan to fall back.
The Zombies in front had already formed a shoulder-to-shoulder line, pressing against one another, allowing for more intense measures to be employed.
As Zheng Yifan's figure gradually merged with the main force, everyone began to slow their pace.
The adjacent road became clearly visible; it was a fork in the road. The Zombies ahead were vast and endless, while the side led to a residential area, effectively separating the Zombies. Although they still gathered in numbers, they were sparse enough that circumventing the Zombie encirclement from the east would allow them to utilize the buildings to deal with the Zombies more effectively.
After all, the front was a four-lane road with wide sidewalks. Moreover, all the side streets converged here, making it seem like the Zombies multiplied with each kill.
Humans would eventually tire; shifting the strategic center became their primary concern.
"Throw!" At the command to launch, several makeshift catapults behind them hurled large Oil Drums into the air. These had been prepared in advance. Once launched, a volley of rockets shot out, expertly fired by Sharpshooters that struck around the Oil Drums.
When the Oil Drums hit the ground, their impact shook off the paper coverings stuck to them, and flames spread across their surfaces, igniting the paper.
The Oil Drums wouldn’t explode; they would slowly spread an Inferno.
They had already calculated the surrounding buildings and aimed to let the Oil Drums burn in the center of the road, effectively blocking most Zombies' passage and spreading flames to others.
As for using large quantities of fuel on the Resort Ruins of Lesser City, that thought never crossed their minds; this was their future home.
Destruction was easy; construction was hard.
As long as the flames could hold back the massive horde of Zombies, it was enough. A team of fifty was formed, with twenty Sword and Shield Bearers at the front and thirty Pikemen behind them, taking turns to block the advancing Zombies.
These Zombies were mostly already scorched by flames, their lethality greatly reduced, and their bodies had become much weaker. The Sword and Shield Bearers could use their shields to block attacks before swinging their longswords.
As long as they aimed for the head, it didn't take much effort to sever their skulls.
The Second-Level Zombie, after being burned by the flames, had its Scorpion Tail's speed significantly diminished. Although still sharp, it could not break through the defense of the Tower Shield. As it was slowly consumed by fire, being pushed from behind by other Zombies, its legs—already burned away of much muscle and fat—would falter and stumble forward into the warriors.
A light stab or thrust could easily end their lives.
Their Zombie Crystal s became Military Merits for the warriors of the Two Major Legions.
Li Ning happened to be one of those fifty, positioned right in the center of the group, facing the most Zombies. Two close brothers stood in front of him with Tower Shields raised for protection while his spear lightly tapped against a Zombie's neck. With a quick jab that severed the vertebrae, he immediately switched targets.
By his side were two warriors dedicated to collecting Zombie Crystal s for him to exchange for Military Merits to participate in this competition.
Neither First-Level nor Second-Level Zombies could last more than two moves against him. Even the terrifying Scorpion Tail of a Second-Level Zombie couldn't breach the Tower Shield; attacking him was quite difficult.
Only a few Zombies managed to squeeze past the two warriors beside him, and they were swiftly dealt with.
The two warriors bearing Tower Shields had another warrior on each side also holding a Tower Shield for defense. The other two warriors collecting Zombie Crystal s should have been working together with him to eliminate Zombies.
However, he clearly accomplished what three people should have done alone, while the other two focused solely on gathering loot.
There was no need to worry about piles of Zombie corpses; as long as they collected the Zombie Crystal s, the bodies would dissolve into liquid and gradually disappear.
No one knew where they went; they only noticed that the greenery on both sides had become increasingly lush and vibrant.
If the war continues for a while longer, some of the greenery will inevitably transform into special plants.
On the other side, Zheng Yifan and his team were engaged in even fiercer combat. With the strategic center shifted, the battlefield had transitioned from wide roads to close-quarters fighting. Although the main road remained two lanes, the pressure had noticeably decreased.
The number of Zombies had also diminished; they were all concentrated in the main passageway. Behind that passage lay a pool of fresh blood, continuously tempting them.
The fifty warriors tried to keep themselves relaxed, knowing that the battle had only just begun and tougher fights lay ahead.
Their opponents numbered at least over a thousand Zombies, which would surely wear them down.
Zheng Yifan led the others as they quickly advanced, aiming to cut off the Zombies' reinforcements, alleviate the pressure on the main road ahead, and then gradually retreat beyond the Resort.
Their mission was nearly complete; they needed rest, as intense fighting could not be sustained for too long.
Their target was the Farming Area beside the Resort. There, a vast expanse of Farmland served as a hallmark of eco-tourism, and it was expected that there wouldn't be too many Zombies around—this would be their resting place for today.
The frontal combat was also slowly retreating. The intersection was already piled high with Oil Drums filled with gasoline, and two trenches dug into the ground were overflowing with fuel.
By morning, it was believed that the Zombies would continue to charge into that fiery trap, meeting their demise one after another.
