The battle had come to an end, and the crowd gradually dispersed. Leading the way was Zheng Yifan, utterly exhausted from a night of fighting, yet his gaze remained resolute. This night had been the most thrilling of his twenty-plus years; he held power in his hands, controlling the lives and deaths of thousands. His blood surged with excitement, for he had the strength to bring hope to others. 0

Thousands of eyes were fixed on him, merely hoping that he could offer them a glimmer of hope for survival. 0

Behind him, Left Guard looked at Zheng Yifan and smiled. He smiled with genuine joy. 0

Just a day ago, Zheng Yifan had seemed like a child, his actions naive and lacking any real-world experience. But now, although still inexperienced, he had changed; he was no longer so lethargic. Perhaps there were other changes as well. 0

At the very least, he dared to fight now, dared to kill, embodying the spirit of a true man. 0

"Make sure to bury those two unfortunate fallen comrades properly, erect a monument for them, and draft the soldier's compensation regulations as soon as possible. We must ensure the families of the martyrs are taken care of," Zheng Yifan said as he walked ahead, glancing at his hands. 0

They were still delicate, marked only by a few shallow scratches; two blisters on his right palm stood out prominently. 0

Clearly, even though his body had evolved, he still lacked some necessary training; his physical condition had not fully caught up. 0

For instance, the calluses on his palms were symbols of a warrior's experience and protection. Calluses shield the palms from damage caused by impact and friction. 0

"Captain! Are those refugees really being gathered back at the Gathering Place? You know those man-eating flowers are about to mature; they will produce Essence!" Left Guard said with a smile. 0

Zheng Yifan replied lightly, "There will be plenty of opportunities to obtain Essence in the future. With so many Zombies on the mountain, we don't have to rely solely on human blood; we can actively capture them." 0

"We can obtain Essence through guidance. For every Zombie we reward, there will naturally be someone willing to catch them or lure them in. In these vast mountains filled with Zombies, there will always be someone willing to feed them." 0

As he spoke, Zheng Yifan pointed towards the main area of the Future Gathering Place that had yet to be conquered. 0

"Over there lies our future home. It needs construction, expansion, and development; every task requires manpower. While killing chickens for eggs may yield immediate benefits, it drains our future resources." 0

Left Guard nodded, gazing hopefully into the distance. 0

There lay the foundation for their future existence—dangerous rivers and formidable cliffs—along with countless mountains blocking any Zombies daring enough to intrude. 0

The only thing lacking was food; however, that was not something Left Guard needed to worry about. He was a soldier—a pure soldier—whose dictionary contained only one word: obedience. 0

"Ah!" A wretched scream echoed continuously; it was the retribution that those who had once bullied others in the stronghold deserved. 0

The Raging Crowd had no weapons; all they had left were their hands and teeth. 0

A dozen people tried to maintain order, but they still could not quell the Raging Crowd. 0

Without weapons, they clawed with their hands, scratched with their fingers, and bit with their mouths. No one aimed for a fatal blow; they only wanted to torment them, just as they had tormented their own kin, these creatures that could no longer be called human. 0

"Ah!" The mournful Howl continued for an entire morning. Those who were on the brink of losing their souls needed to vent, needed to release their pent-up pressure. 0

These people were also consuming human flesh, but Zheng Yifan had only captured the leader of the thieves. The others would be closely monitored until they could be fully trusted before being released from scrutiny. 0

The primary focus was on food regulation. All food distribution would be limited and inspected. In the initial period, Zheng Yifan did not mind allowing them to share meals from a communal pot, distributing food based on tickets—those who contributed more would receive more rations. Any surplus could be exchanged for future Ration Tickets, which could be redeemed once the monitoring period ended. 0

This was a necessary measure; Zheng Yifan did not know who among them was human and who was a monster. The only ones he could trust were the 77 people following him; everyone else was still under evaluation. 0

He believed that most of the people in the Gathering Place would eventually be useful to him. The others would be eliminated silently through iron-fisted means. 0

Old Hou had already gathered all the information Guo Yi knew. 0

According to testimonies, they had attracted the attention of Advanced Zombies in the Han Sui City Gathering Place due to their reckless development of the Superpower Project. The Man-Eating Flower Seeds from Cat Ear Cliff Gathering Place were traded by Guo Yi in exchange for a pair of sisters. These seeds were the lowest grade of super plants. 0

Other Mutated Plants were found in the Superpowered Individual research base in Hansui City; these Mutated Plants had been discovered in the wild. 0

The Left Guard slowly reported to Zheng Yifan while Old Hou looked on with eager anticipation. 0

He knew that Zheng Yifan's team had just begun operations, and how much power and benefit they could gain depended on what happened now. 0

Despite his past as an agent, in this apocalyptic world, he was nothing—struggling even for basic survival. 0

Moreover, he had to support two daughters and a son. In peaceful times, this would have been easy for him; he had many resources and had even managed to gather a significant amount outside. 0

But now, he found it difficult just to provide for his children. 0

Reflecting on this past year truly revealed how incredibly challenging it had been. 0

Becoming a spy again was simply impossible; he didn't have the skills to go undercover among the Zombies. 0

Although there were other Gathering Places, the greatest enemy in this apocalypse would always be the Zombies. They were the strongest beings in this world, while humans were merely ants struggling to survive. 0

"Old Hou, from now on, you’ll take on the responsibility of managing security in the Gathering Place. As for your main duties, we’ll assign them to you when needed. However, we need to start training new recruits back at the Gathering Place," Zheng Yifan said casually while listening to Left Guard's report. 0

"Thank you! Thank you!" For Old Hou, this was fantastic news. Managing security was a lucrative job, and even if he played by the rules, the occasional income would be enough for him to live on. 0

Corruption issues in this apocalypse were inevitable; they existed wherever there were people, only varying in how strictly they were managed. 0

Zheng Yifan never envisioned a utopia; that was beyond human reach. He only aimed for relative integrity. 0

Otherwise, why would people follow him? Did they want to end up like Zhu Yuanzhang's subordinates during the Ming Dynasty? Even a seventh-rank county magistrate starving for food? 0

That wasn't integrity; that was foolishness. It would lead to even more severe corruption issues. 0

"Upon returning to Ruiguan, everyone will cook and provide free meals for those refugees so they can eat their fill. We will clean up the entire Gathering Place within today, recruit talent, and quickly establish work projects and reward-punishment measures. We need to make things clear and get everyone moving; we can't let them sit around thinking about nonsense," Zheng Yifan stated seriously. 0

He understood that he must be cold-blooded and ruthless in the future, forcing himself to do things he was reluctant to do. 0
