The banquet hosted by Huankezhao was a grand affair, attended by prominent figures from all walks of life and covered by major media outlets. The entrance was bustling with people; despite its spaciousness, a slight congestion had formed.
Vera stood gracefully beside Jufeng, the center of attention amidst the crowd. Even the most distinguished giants of various industries, who had seen countless beauties, couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence upon seeing Vera. They secretly summoned all their energy, hoping that in a fleeting moment, she might notice that they were more suited to her than the man beside her.
Jufeng felt the greedy gazes of the surrounding men and instinctively tightened his grip on Vera's hand.
A smile played at the corners of Vera's lips as she realized how wonderful this feeling was—something she had never experienced before.
"How did I never notice before that you have such charm?" In the brief pause as their car slowed down, just before Jufeng opened the door and nodded in agreement to share life and death together, an unspoken bond was formed, making Vera's voice sound even lighter.
Jufeng smiled slightly, nodding at some friendly faces in the crowd before leaning closer to Vera's ear and saying softly, "No one dared to look at you like this before."
Back on Earth, Vera was a renowned European Blue Cat, rarely seen in public. Those who knew her identity would never dare to harbor any covetous thoughts. Now, however, everyone seemed to regard her with disdainful eyes, openly revealing their inner greed.
Feeling a slight tickle near her ear, Vera's cheeks flushed lightly, her brows lowered, enhancing her allure and provoking fierce glares from the males watching Jufeng.
Of course, there were many socialites and beloved wives of notable figures competing for attention in such an environment. Yet Vera possessed an undeniable charisma that attracted jealousy and resentment from many.
It seemed that this couple was not particularly welcomed in such a setting even before they had begun.
However, Jufeng merely smiled. It was already a chaotic scene of one against a hundred; a little extra animosity could turn into an opportunity. After all, wasn't there a saying about winning amidst chaos? Jufeng firmly believed in it.
The long line moved steadily into the venue. The entire first floor of Huankezhao had been temporarily transformed into a banquet hall. Police officers patrolled every corner and entrance, but today they were not in uniforms; instead, they all donned sleek black tuxedos.
Soon it was Jufeng and Vera's turn. Jufeng elegantly presented their invitation letter, waiting for it to be verified.
However, during the two seconds of waiting, a formally dressed yet seemingly frivolous man suddenly appeared at the entrance of a nearby passage, watching Jufeng. Romain felt the gaze and naturally turned to look.
It was indeed a very frivolous face—young, yet upon closer inspection, it seemed oddly mature.
“Feng Shao? Heh heh…”
The frivolous man casually called out a name, then laughed as he looked at Jufeng, his eyes filled with mischief.
Upon hearing his name spoken so easily by this stranger, Romain felt a sinking sensation in his heart. The face was too unfamiliar, yet this unknown person knew him; such a feeling was quite uncomfortable.
“A friend knows me, but I do not know you. That seems rather unfair.”
Both inspectors had finished their checks and gestured for them to proceed. Jufeng walked alongside the man in the two passages, smiling as he asked.
He couldn’t afford to lose face; since the other party was familiar with him, he had to act as if he were equally familiar with the other.
“Well, that’s where Feng Shao is mistaken. I know you care about me, but it makes me quite sad that Feng Shao doesn’t know me.”
As he spoke, the man feigned a heartbroken expression, acting as if he were a wronged girl abandoned by Jufeng.
Vera, standing nearby, couldn’t help but find this person amusing. However, interesting people often fell into two categories: genuinely friendly or having ulterior motives. Without a second thought, she categorized him into the latter group.
Romain was taken aback by the man’s antics and hadn’t even had time to respond before the man continued, “Oh, I remember now! Feng Shao is busy dealing with the Crown Prince and the Second Prince; how could you have time to know me? Heh heh, we’ll meet again at the banquet if fate allows. I’ll give Feng Shao some time to think.”
The man finished speaking and walked through the passage, disappearing into the crowd. Jufeng did not pursue him; with allies and enemies unknown, it was best to remain unchanged in the face of uncertainty.
"He doesn't seem like an enemy, but he appears frivolous while being quite deep in thought," Vera reminded him. Jufeng nodded, contemplating the man's words, and suddenly his eyes lit up.
"Have you figured it out?" Vera noticed Jufeng's change in demeanor and asked softly.
A smile slowly spread across Jufeng's lips as he replied, "If I'm not mistaken, it should be him. He may not necessarily be our friend, but he is certainly an enemy of our enemy. Isn't that a position worth cultivating?"
Vera was unsure who Jufeng was referring to, but she thought that since he had taken the initiative to approach them, there was a great chance they could sit down and talk.
"Naturally, it's worth it."
With a footstep on the ground, as they spoke, the two finally arrived at the grand venue.
The sound of voices surged like boiling water in a cauldron, suddenly filling Jufeng's and Vera's ears.
Vera frowned slightly, seemingly unaccustomed to such noise.
The place was filled with a throng of people, all dressed in suits and formal attire. Occasionally, a few unconventional women donned straight-leg pants or slightly outrageous outfits, hoping to attract attention in such an environment.
Here and there, waitresses wandered around with glasses in hand, wearing shorts that added a touch of casualness to the otherwise solemn banquet.
Jufeng and Vera arrived late. The crowd entering the venue behind them was becoming increasingly sparse. He looked up at the large clock designed and crafted by Senior Huankezhao, noting that there was less than ten minutes until the banquet began.
Romain held Vera's hand as they navigated through the sea of people, eventually finding a quiet corner. He took a glass of fine wine from a young maid who still bore a youthful innocence. Turning to Vera, he said, "I believe this is the first time I've worn a suit. How about you?"
"It's my first time too," Vera replied with a charming smile.
"Such opportunities in life are rare. You know, I held my wedding on Earth, and it wasn't nearly this formal. It seems like my bridal party is missing you, so I thought, why not make up for it here?"
In Vera's gaze, which was a mix of astonishment, disbelief, and confusion, Romain slowly knelt before her, holding out his glass of wine.
"Will you marry me?"
