Isabella stumbled to her feet, unsteadily supporting herself with her hands. Jonas immediately stepped forward, intending to steady her arm, but before he could get close, Isabella spun around sharply and shouted, "Don't touch me!"
Jonas froze for a moment, retracting his hand, confusion and concern filling his eyes. He opened his mouth as if to ask something, but Isabella's serious and resolute expression made him realize this was no ordinary reaction.
"The Black Worm... they can invade the human body through various forms of contact," Isabella said calmly, though her breathing was erratic, her voice carrying a cool warning. "I may have already been completely parasitized. You must not come into contact with me. Keep your distance."
Her words poured over Jonas like ice water. He instinctively took a step back, his expression growing more serious as conflicting emotions flickered in his eyes—on one hand, worry for Isabella's safety; on the other, panic at the unfolding situation.
"Listen, Jonas," Isabella took a deep breath, her tone resolute. "If... no, if things spiral out of control, I could very well become the next Mocus. This data, these recordings will be the only evidence proving these things exist. So you must ensure you are not infected; at least then you can survive to take this information out."
Jonas remained silent, an immense pressure swirling within him. His gaze was fixed on Isabella, searching her eyes for a glimmer of defiance against fate, but all he found was determined rationality. Isabella's shoulders trembled slightly; her body seemed on the verge of collapse, yet her will was as solid as rock.
"Stay alert, stay rational; that's the most important thing you can do," Isabella said, looking deeply into Jonas's eyes as if transferring all hope and burden to him. "You have a better chance of getting out than I do. When everything becomes irretrievable, you must escape with the data and leave here with the truth."
Jonas wanted to argue; he wanted to say he wouldn't just abandon her. But seeing her expression, he could only remain silent. He knew that Isabella had prepared for the worst and that he had to shoulder the responsibility she entrusted to him.
Isabella managed a difficult smile, one tinged with self-mockery and helplessness. "Right now, you're our only insurance."
She locked eyes with Jonas, her gaze unwavering and resolute. "Did you hear me?" she asked, her voice weak yet filled with urgency.
Jonas paused for a moment before gently nodding. However, this silent response was clearly insufficient. Isabella continued to hold his gaze tightly and frowned as she softly said, "I didn't hear that."
Jonas took a deep breath, suppressing his unease and replied calmly, "I understand."
Isabella nodded slightly, as if confirming that her message had been conveyed. However, before she could say more, her body suddenly shook violently, as if losing balance. She stumbled back a few steps and crashed heavily against a nearby control panel. Her face turned pale in an instant, cold sweat breaking out on her forehead, as if something terrifying was stirring within her.
"Isabella!" Jonas exclaimed, rushing forward but forcing himself to stop at the last moment. His hand almost reached her, but ultimately withdrew as he remembered her warning against any contact.
Isabella gasped in pain, gripping the control panel tightly, her knuckles turning white as her body trembled like a puppet on strings. The black Worms could not be controlled by her will, so they began to turn their attention to controlling her body instead. She felt them crawling like frenzied parasites from her limbs to her spine and then to her brain, gradually infesting every inch of her skin and every nerve.
Her body shuddered violently; her shoulders twitched uncontrollably, and the sensation of the writhing darkness seemed ready to consume her whole. Her legs nearly gave way beneath her; her knees buckled, almost causing her to collapse onto the floor.
"Damn it..." Isabella whispered through gritted teeth, her lips trembling slightly. She tried to resist these entities with her willpower, filled with a fierce sense of defiance, but she could feel the Worms' encroachment deepening; her body was gradually becoming no longer hers.
Jonas stood by helplessly, unable to tear his gaze away, filled with a sense of powerlessness. He watched Isabella battling some dreadful force but could do nothing to help her. His knuckles turned white from gripping his gun tightly, his eyes reflecting his struggle.
"Don't... let them win," Isabella growled softly, enduring the pain. "I can still... hold on for a while..." She gasped as she tried to regain her footing, but the invisible struggle was evident, making her movements awkward.
"Isabella!" Jonas called out again, wanting to approach her but having to restrain himself.
Isabella took a deep breath and finally managed to stand upright. There was still a glimmer of determination in her eyes; though fragile, it had never faded. "We don't have time," she said with a final resolve, as if all of her being was racing against time.
In agony, Isabella leaned against the control panel, beads of sweat rolling down her forehead as her chest heaved violently. Her face twisted in anguish, eyes filled with hatred for the Black Worms within her. Suddenly, she began to curse loudly, filled with defiance and anger: "You damned parasites! Cowardly fools! You can't even control your own bodies yet you wish to dominate everything?" Her voice echoed in the dark cabin as if trying to overpower the evil forces attempting to take control of her.
Her taunts seemed to enrage the Worms; the malevolent force hidden in her mind became more active. She felt the Worms writhing madly within her nervous system as if responding to her words. A sharp voice exploded in her mind, filled with malicious curses and mockery that ruthlessly attacked her self-esteem and sought to destroy her will: "You think you can resist us? You're just a weak and powerless mortal!" The voice reverberated in her head as if trying to swallow her whole.
A cold smile appeared on Isabella's face; despite trembling uncontrollably, there was an indomitable light in her gaze. "Weak and powerless?" she scoffed softly, laced with fearless disdain. "Then let's see who breaks first—me or you!"
At that moment, Jonas took a deep breath, standing beside her. He knew Isabella was engaged in a terrifying internal struggle, and there wasn't much he could do to help her. However, he suddenly remembered that he had an emergency dose of Muscle Relaxant in his bag, intended for cramps after prolonged exercise. Perhaps it could temporarily suppress the activity of the Worms within Isabella, giving her a chance to breathe.
"Isabella, wait," Jonas said softly, quickly rummaging through his backpack to retrieve the Muscle Relaxant. He looked at Isabella, concern etched in his eyes. "This might help you a little."
Isabella glanced at the syringe in Jonas's hand, hesitation flickering in her gaze. "Do you think that thing can suppress them?" Her voice remained hoarse but carried a hint of hope.
"I'm not sure," Jonas admitted honestly, gripping the syringe tightly. "But it's better than doing nothing."
Isabella fell silent for a moment before nodding, gritting her teeth as she extended her arm. "Then let's give it a try."
Jonas swiftly injected the syringe into her arm. The moment the needle pierced her skin, a flicker of pain crossed Isabella's face, but she clenched her jaw and made no sound. As the medication entered her body, she felt the chaotic writhing within her seem to temporarily subside, and the pain eased slightly.
"How do you feel?" Jonas asked nervously, watching her reaction intently.
"Not bad..." Isabella gasped, forcing herself to hold on to her willpower, managing a strained smile. "The Worms are quieting down for now, but we need to hurry; this won't last long." Her eyes sparkled with determination, understanding that every step they took next would determine their fate.
