“Mr. Merlin, we will be the next Apple. Just wait and see,” Mark said confidently.
He never doubted that with the Virtual Helmet, this piece of cutting-edge technology from Sweet Potato Technology, they would surpass Apple.
“Well, sir, maybe you’re right, but I doubt I’ll be around to see it,” Merlin replied, shaking his head. “If there’s nothing else, I think you can leave now. We have our own plans for the exhibition, so you needn’t worry about that. If you have time, perhaps you should go back and get some more sleep; it might make changing the world a bit easier.”
Mark knew that mere words wouldn’t convince Merlin, the old man. Fortunately, he had brought a Virtual Helmet with him, which would be enough to win over Merlin.
He gestured for Tiamat to open the box and took out a gleaming silver Virtual Helmet. He said to Merlin, “Mr. Merlin, I think it’s best if you experience our product before making a decision. I believe you will change your mind.”
“What is this?” Merlin asked curiously as he took the helmet.
“A Virtual World Access Device. If you don’t mind, you can also call it a Virtual Helmet,” Mark said proudly.
Merlin’s smile widened, as if he found Mark utterly ridiculous.
Holding the silver Virtual Helmet, he mocked, “Sir, is your virtual world the same as what I understand a virtual world to be?”
“I believe it is,” Mark nodded.
Merlin’s expression changed abruptly as he retorted sharply, “Enough! You ridiculous fellow, thinking you can earn my trust with such a rudimentary VR Device. You’re truly a boring guy. Do you really think I would fall for your trick?”
“This is not a VR Device!” Mark emphasized.
Merlin chuckled dismissively, “Oh? Not a VR Device? Then what is it? An AR Device?”
Mark was infuriated by Merlin’s continuous disdain and mockery. He shouted angrily, “Mr. Merlin, please try it before passing judgment! I think any evaluation you give without experiencing it first is nothing but mockery towards us.”
"I'm sorry about that, but honestly, I don't really believe it," Merlin shrugged nonchalantly.
However, under the furious gazes of Mark and the designers, Merlin reluctantly put on the Virtual Helmet. He had made up his mind; even if there were good aspects to this device, he would not hold back in delivering the harshest criticism.
Since this was a special model of the Virtual Helmet, the one Merlin wore did not require any cables or circuits to operate.
Once he donned the helmet, Merlin was astonished to find a galaxy-like scene unfolding before him.
The shining Stars seemed to be right in front of his eyes, giving him a sensation as if he were immersed in a Cosmic Starry Sky.
"Oh, this isn't bad. But that's about it."
Merlin silently gave his assessment: "Let's see what they have to change the world."
The Stars swirling in the galaxy each represented a different application. Just like navigating a smartphone's interface, Merlin instinctively knew how to operate it.
However, there were only a few applications available; aside from several System apps, there was only one application for PUBG.
With a mindset of giving it a try, Merlin clicked on PUBG.
In an instant, everything went dark, and the loud sound of gunfire filled his ears. The sensation of plummeting at high speed made Merlin panic momentarily.
"Oh my god, is this an earthquake?"
Before he could react further, the scene brightened again. To his astonishment, he found himself on the edge of a beach.
Lifelike Coconut Trees swayed gently, a Ruined Airport lay scattered with debris, and the tide ebbed and flowed before him. Each scene left Merlin utterly bewildered.
What on earth just happened?
Why had he been sitting comfortably in the office one moment and suddenly found himself on this mysterious beach? Was this some kind of nightmare?
Until Merlin incredulously pinched his own face and felt no pain, he finally realized that everything before him was an illusion.
"Am I dreaming? But I'm not experiencing that manufacturer's Virtual Helmet, so how did I suddenly start dreaming?"
Suddenly, it struck Merlin like a bolt of lightning. He exclaimed, "The virtual world! It really is the virtual world!"
Indeed, Merlin recalled Mark's earlier words. The helmet was an access point to the virtual world, and since he had put it on...
Looking around at the almost indistinguishable scenery, Merlin completely lost his mind.
The virtual world had truly emerged! That guy wasn't lying to me; this is something that can change the world!
Merlin went wild on the beach, running around like a madman. He had completely lost his basic sense of reason, utterly stunned by the scene unfolding before him.
The virtual world—how many people had dreamed of such a sight? Now that dream had come true, how could Merlin not be excited?
As the Executive Chairman of the International Consumer Electronics Show Organizing Committee, Merlin had seen countless technological products. Yet, what intrigued him most was still the conceptual product of the virtual world.
The emergence of VR and AR had once led Merlin to believe that the virtual world was just around the corner. However, the more he learned about them, the more despairing he became. This was not the virtual world he envisioned; the real virtual world should not be like this.
Merlin had once pessimistically thought that significant advancements in virtual worlds would take decades to achieve.
But unexpectedly, a company from the East had given him such a huge surprise. The virtual world had not only made tremendous progress but had also been technically perfected.
At that moment, Merlin deeply regretted his earlier impulsiveness in mocking Mark and others without understanding their product.
Indeed, the Virtual Helmet had completely shocked Merlin. It made him realize that Mark's previous claims were not mere boasts but something genuinely achievable.
Merlin decided then and there to help Sweet Potato Technology arrange for the best booth at this exhibition. He could already envision the kind of impact the Virtual Helmet would create once the exhibition began. No matter how novel other electronic products were or how prominent other manufacturers might be—even if Apple were to launch the iPhone 100—it would be impossible to steal attention away from this helmet.
Changing the world? That was a certainty!
He could even imagine that as the launch site for the International Consumer Electronics Show and the Virtual Helmet, they would undoubtedly receive even greater attention. Even though they were already quite famous, who wouldn't want to gain more recognition?
It was a win-win situation!
Just as Merlin was making his plans, a mechanical female voice suddenly echoed in his ears.
"Boarding preparation underway, please get ready, players!"
Before Merlin could react, he found himself in a crowded cabin as the surroundings changed abruptly.
At the same time, he felt something like a backpack appear on his back. Having experienced skydiving before, Merlin recognized it as a professional parachuting backpack.
"What is this for?" Merlin exclaimed in astonishment.
