Early the next morning, Li Hong had just pulled Yuchen out of bed to wash his face and eat breakfast when Lin Ruxian knocked on the door.
"Just wait a moment; I need to take Yuchen to kindergarten," Li Hong said while eating the breakfast prepared by the aunt.
Lin Ruxian smiled sweetly and shook her head. "It's fine; I'll just wait for you."
Li Hong nodded and didn’t say much to Lin Ruxian, quickly urging Yuchen to eat.
It was already seven-thirty in the morning, and Sunshine Kindergarten started at eight-thirty, leaving them little time. However, Yuchen seemed still unaccustomed to this routine, sitting in his chair and yawning unhappily.
"Hurry up and eat; we need to get you to kindergarten. Today is your first day of school, so don’t be late," Li Hong said sternly, which was rare for him.
Yuchen pouted and said, "Uncle, I don’t want to go to school anymore."
Children are often like that; their desire to attend school relies heavily on their interest. If something is hard for them to accept, they quickly develop a reluctance to go.
Li Hong felt helpless and was about to explain the benefits of school when Lin Ruxian interrupted him.
"Just eat your breakfast; I'll take care of Yuchen," Lin Ruxian said, her maternal glow almost blinding Li Hong.
With a twitch of his mouth, since Lin Ruxian was willing to help relieve his stress, Li Hong didn’t object.
Focusing on his meal, Li Hong paid no attention to Lin Ruxian and Yuchen. It wasn’t until he finished eating that he noticed Yuchen had suddenly regained enthusiasm for school, thanks to whatever Lin Ruxian had told him.
Receiving a questioning look from Li Hong, Lin Ruxian lifted her delicate chin proudly and smiled at him.
"Hmph..." Li Hong decided not to engage with these two troublesome ones any further.
After breakfast, it was already eight o'clock. Li Hong drove with Lin Ruxian and Yuchen toward Sunshine Kindergarten.
As Li Hong sat in the driver's seat, Lin Ruxian in the back held the nervous Yuchen tightly, continuously offering her comforting words.
This was also the first time Li Hong realized that having a woman around could be quite beneficial when it came to taking care of children. If it weren't for Lin Ruxian, he wouldn't have known how to comfort the nervous Yuchen; he probably would have struggled to say anything at all.
Sunshine Kindergarten was not far from where Li Hong lived, just a ten-minute drive away. If it weren't for the terrible traffic in the capital, they would have arrived in just a few minutes without any delays.
However, it didn't matter much; at least he managed to drop Yuchen off before class started.
As he held Yuchen's hand and walked into the kindergarten, Yuchen turned back to glance at Lin Ruxian, who was waiting by the car, and softly asked Li Hong, "Uncle, are you going to marry that pretty auntie?"
"Who told you that?" Li Hong felt a bit uneasy.
Hadn't he already told Sister Wang not to let Yuchen know? Did Lin Ruxian break the rules and secretly tell Yuchen?
Yuchen bit her lip and said with innocent sincerity, "Uncle, you're lying. You're always going to love Yuchen..."
As she spoke, tears began to well up in her eyes.
Li Hong's heart ached for her. He quickly squatted down and hugged Yuchen tightly, gently stroking her head as he comforted her, "Don't cry, sweetheart. I'm not lying. I will always love you, and I promise I will keep that promise. Marrying this auntie is just to help her with a problem; I will always belong to you."
"Uncle will always belong to Yuchen?" Yuchen looked up at Li Hong with clear eyes.
"Yes, always yours. No one else can take anything away from you, no matter how good they are." Li Hong's ability to soothe children had certainly improved through practice.
His heartfelt words finally made Yuchen smile through her tears.
Just as they were about to enter the classroom, Yuchen gestured for Li Hong to bend down. Although confused, he complied and lowered his head.
A soft little kiss landed on his cheek as Yuchen whispered in his ear, "Uncle, can I call you Daddy from now on?"
"Okay!" Li Hong's emotions surged; it was a rare moment of excitement for him.
He knew what this meant. After living with Yuchen for so long, he had finally received her acknowledgment, and how could that not make Li Hong feel happy?
Taking advantage of Li Hong's excitement, Yuchen turned around and made a face at a woman outside who was gritting her teeth. Then she turned back with a sweet smile, released Li Hong's hand, and gently called out, "Daddy!"
Feeling a bit embarrassed afterward, she quickly covered her face and ran into the classroom.
Li Hong chuckled, gave a few instructions to Yuchen's teacher, and left the kindergarten with a hint of reluctance, glancing back three times.
When he returned to the car and opened the door, he found Lin Ruxian already sitting in the passenger seat, teasingly looking at him.
"What are you staring at? Is there something dirty on my face?" Li Hong asked in confusion.
After rubbing his face with his hand and confirming there was nothing there, he finally relaxed.
"That sly smile of yours clearly shows you're up to no good," Lin Ruxian huffed.
Li Hong started the car and adjusted the steering wheel. "What are you thinking about? That's my daughter; where's the slyness in that smile?"
"How does it feel to be a doting father?" Lin Ruxian asked with a hint of jealousy.
Even she didn't understand why she reacted so strongly when she saw Yuchen kiss Li Hong. After all, Yuchen was Li Hong's daughter; how could she be upset with her?
But seeing that little witch make a face at her after kissing Li Hong felt like a heavy punch to her heart.
Damn it, how could I be provoked by a five-year-old kid!
Thinking about it made Lin Ruxian feel a wave of frustration. It was just a comment about how she would soon become Yuchen's stepmother; did it have to be so disgusting?
Li Hong was oblivious to the tension between them. At that moment, he was still basking in the sweetness of Yuchen calling him "Daddy."
Yuchen called me Daddy...
And even kissed me?
"Ugh, why are all those anime scenes of a certain father flashing through my mind?"
Noticing Li Hong lost in thought, Lin Ruxian quickly reminded him, "Hey, can you focus on driving? I'm in the car!"
"Sorry, I just zoned out for a moment..." Li Hong replied with an awkward smile, quickly pulling himself together to concentrate on driving.
"Perverted father!"
Lin Ruxian muttered discontentedly.
After driving onto the street, Li Hong asked the passenger seat Lin Ruxian, "So, are we heading straight to the civil affairs bureau or...?"
"Civil affairs bureau!" Lin Ruxian replied flatly.
"Uh, okay." Li Hong nodded and turned the car towards the direction of the civil affairs bureau.
