I turned my head and saw blood gushing from Li Squad Leader's arm; he had clearly injured his brachial artery.
"Fall back, fall back!" Li Squad Leader paid no mind to his injury. He leaned over me, urging me to retreat, while he grabbed Heizi and tossed him into my arms.
The gunfire above grew increasingly intense, and a Narcotics Officer was shot in the chest, collapsing right in front of me. The other Narcotics Officers pulled out a transparent shield that initially seemed small but expanded into a large barrier when opened. Everyone took cover behind the shield as someone threw a grenade. The explosion lit up with a blinding flash; it was a flashbang.
Taking advantage of the moment, Li Squad Leader urged us to fall back to take cover behind a large rock.
"Shh!" A soldier stepped forward and began to bandage Li Squad Leader's wound. Li Squad Leader pressed his lips together, saying nothing.
I felt grateful to Li Squad Leader for saving my life just moments ago. That feeling of brushing against death was unsettling! I was thankful, but it was too early to express my gratitude; after all, no one knew if we would survive the next moment.
I glanced sideways and saw Zhang Yuru, one arm holding Flower Girl and the other gripping her gun, looking back at me.
I smiled at Zhang Yuru. "Exciting, isn't it?"
"Exciting my ass!" Zhang Yuru panted. "When we get back, you better give me a raise!"
The people brought by Wen Fei were indeed elite. In that chaotic situation, the enemy held the advantageous position while we were exposed on the hillside. If it had been anyone else, we might have panicked and lost half our team by now.
"Call for backup!" Wen Fei said. "We can't afford to hesitate any longer; let's try again."
"Yes!" One of the team members responded, pulling out three objects resembling detonators from his pocket. He removed the caps from the bottom, and with a whoosh, one shot up into the air—it was a signal flare.
The team member fired three signal flares in quick succession.
However, Wen Fei and the others had no expectations. Setting off flares in this place might not attract anyone's attention, as it was a mountainous area.
At that moment, over twenty people came rushing down from the hillside, accompanied by the sound of submachine guns firing.
"Prepare for battle!" Li Squad Leader gritted his teeth, ignoring his injured arm. He shouted loudly and pulled out a handgun, firing it with a bang.
They began to fight back.
I hid behind a rock and raised my head to see what was happening outside.
Wen Fei pressed down on my shoulder. "Don't move, let them handle it. Mr. Song, I apologize for dragging you into this mess, but I promise that unless we all perish, we will ensure your safety and that of your friends."
I nodded in response.
Just then, a team member shouted, "Not good! The enemy isn't afraid of bullets! Everyone, stay alert!"
"This is bad; they're too fast! Squad Leader, they're monsters! Their speed is incredible; bullets can't kill them!" another soldier yelled.
"Use grenades!" Li Squad Leader commanded.
With a loud explosion, flames erupted from behind. Another soldier exclaimed, "This is bad; there are more and more monsters!"
I listened in confusion, peeking my head out, and my eyes widened as I saw more than twenty Blood Corpses mixed among the Drug Traffickers, charging towards our position.
There weren't many Drug Traffickers, only seven or eight, but the number of Blood Corpses was overwhelming. The key was that these Blood Corpses, driven by Resentment, showed no fear of bullets. Moreover, they moved incredibly fast and were already rushing towards us.
"It's the Blood Corpses!" I shouted, then got to my feet and called out loudly, "You deal with those Drug Traffickers and cover me! I'll handle these Blood Corpses. Heizi, let's go! Make sure to protect Heizi; don't let it get hit!"
These Zombies in reality were far more terrifying than those portrayed in Lin Zhengying's movies. In Grandpa Lin's films, Zombies moved slowly, hopping along with their arms outstretched, only able to grab at people. But in reality, these Zombies were like crazed individuals on steroids; they moved quickly and possessed immense strength. Driven by Resentment, they showed no fear of gunfire.
I charged forward while my right hand pulled out a bell from my backpack—the Corpse-Subduing Bell!
I shook the bell in my hand, and suddenly the frenzied Zombies slowed down. They clutched their heads and bared their teeth at me, wanting to devour me.
I moved closer while pulling out a Fire Thunder Talisman.
At that moment, the Li Squad Leader understood my intent. He shouted, "Second Squad, cover Song Fei and his dog!"
Just then, several bullets whizzed past me.
A soldier pushed me down to the ground and held a transparent shield in front of me while firing back at the enemy. Another soldier stood in front of me, while a third positioned himself in front of Heizi.
I didn't have time to think or feel fear. I kept shaking the Corpse-Subduing Bell as I approached the nearest Blood Corpse. Its eyes were wide open, and its face was distorted. The two Special Forces members in front of me were scared but still bravely stood their ground.
I realized that these Zombies could charge out now because they were different from the Corpses raised from the Corpse Raising Ground. Those Corpses were just ordinary Zombies that could be controlled but had little Resentment. These Zombies must have been deliberately created into Blood Corpses; they were nothing less than killing machines!
I picked up a Fire Thunder Talisman and threw it at the Zombie's head.
Boom...
A flash of fire erupted.
The two soldiers in front of me were startled, and the Blood Corpse was instantly reduced to a pile of ashes.
Heizi was right beside me. Upon seeing the Blood Corpse, it lunged forward and bit into it. The spot where Heizi bit began to rot immediately, creating a large hole.
With Heizi by my side, we charged towards the remaining Blood Corpses. The sound of my Corpse-Subduing Bell slowed their movements, and after being bitten by Heizi, they became even more sluggish, with some collapsing directly to the ground.
Armed with the Azure Thunder Staff, Talisman, and witchcraft, along with Heizi's exceptional ability to deal with Zombies, I felt a surge of confidence. These more than ten Blood Corpses were definitely no match for me! However, given the urgency of the situation, I couldn't afford to absorb the Demonic Power from these Blood Corpses.
Seeing my prowess, the Drug Traffickers behind us opened fire. The two soldiers in front of me raised their shields to protect me. I had no idea what those shields were made of; bullets struck them but were easily deflected.
The Drug Traffickers continued to fall; despite their relatively advanced weapons, they were still far outmatched by these elite Special Forces. Soon enough, four Drug Traffickers had already been killed.
As their numbers dwindled, my pressure increased. I focused on exterminating the Blood Corpses. Without the Corpse-Subduing Bell, to be honest, just one Blood Corpse would be enough trouble for me. But now, with the Corpse-Subduing Bell acting as a bane to Zombies, they moved sluggishly under its toll. I could take one down with just two strikes; for some stronger Blood Corpses, adding a Fire Thunder Talisman would surely finish them off.
The number of Blood Corpses was rapidly decreasing. Victory was leaning in our favor.
At that moment, the Li Squad Leader shouted from behind, "Charge! Take out the remaining Drug Traffickers!"
Several Special Forces rushed forward.
The Drug Traffickers turned and ran.
The Blood Corpses seemed to respond to some kind of summons, turning back to flee.
Heizi dashed forward, chasing after the Blood Corpses to bite them. I shouted loudly, "Heizi, come back!"
Heizi ran back to my side.
Seeing that the crisis had passed, I plopped down on the ground, and then a wave of sweat burst forth from my forehead! It was a cold sweat, but not from fear.
The Corpse-Subduing Bell was chilling to the bone, and manipulating the Corpse-Subduing Bell required mental energy as well.
"Song Fei, are you alright?" Zhang Yuru ran over.
I shook my head and smiled slightly. "I'm fine, just a bit tired. I need to rest for a moment."
"Kidney deficiency; it often happens after exertion. You might be overextending yourself..." Zhang Yuru began.
I shot her a glare. "Shut up, you."
Wen Fei also approached and asked, "Song Fei, are you okay?"
I shook my head, "Just a bit overworked, I'm fine."
"Commander, we should leave here quickly," Li Squad Leader said as he approached. "If we don't hurry, something else might happen."
Wen Fei nodded and came over to support me as we prepared to walk out of the Valley. The soldiers around us formed a circle, holding their transparent shields, all looking quite tense.
The recent chaos, with Drug Traffickers and Losses, had everyone on edge.
"Woof!"
Heizi suddenly barked.
The sound startled us all. I felt the most anxious; I knew that if nothing was wrong, Heizi wouldn't have barked like that.
Just then, behind us, there was a sudden "crack" sound.
I immediately turned my head and saw a coffin lid fall to the ground. Then, the Corpse inside slowly stood up.
"What’s going on?" Wen Fei also noticed the situation.
As soon as Wen Fei finished speaking, more Corpses began to rise. Some of them were charred and barely intact, yet they stood up as well.
When thousands of Zombies began to move at once, even I felt a chill run down my spine.
"What is happening?" I asked in panic. It was impossible; these Zombies were just ordinary corpses created in the Corpse Raising Ground, with very little Resentment. They shouldn't be able to move at all!
I instinctively looked up, and at that moment, I sat down in shock.
"What's wrong with you?" Wen Fei asked.
I pointed upward.
The sky was overcast, thick with clouds. I couldn't tell when it had changed! It should have been around three in the afternoon, a time when the sun would be shining brightly! So even if there were those Eerie Energies blocking the sunlight, I had never been afraid because I knew that the dark clouds formed by those resentful energies couldn't block the sun for long; the sunlight would surely break through!
But just as we were engaged in fierce combat with those Blood Corpses, the sky had already turned dark! The clouds were dense, completely obscuring the sun.
A breeze swept by, and soon raindrops began to fall.
