I was drenched in cold sweat. To be honest, I had faced many dangers while exorcising spirits, but this car chase was a first for me! At this moment, all I could do was trust the BYD vehicle I was driving. I just hoped that this domestic car would hold up!
Though I was nervous, my mind was exceptionally clear—sharper than ever!
My speed soared to one hundred kilometers per hour. I couldn't go any faster; even if I managed to ram them off the road, I'd be risking my own life. I definitely didn't want to die!
Suddenly, two bullets struck my windshield, but the glass remained intact! The bullets lodged themselves in the glass and were blown away by the wind.
With a roar, my car charged toward the RAV4. Just before impact, I slightly adjusted the steering wheel, and the right front of my car slammed into the side of the other vehicle.
With a loud bang, that paper-thin Toyota RAV4 crumpled under the force of my car, splitting in two. At that moment, my front end lost stability, and my vehicle veered sharply in another direction.
I gripped the steering wheel tightly; now was not the time for drastic adjustments. If I oversteered, I'd flip the car. Although I hadn't had my driver's license for long, I knew basic driving principles well. It was like having a blowout on the highway—never jerk the wheel suddenly. No matter if you were driving an Audi or a Ferrari, whether you had ESP or four-wheel drive, oversteering would lead to disaster.
I pressed down hard on the steering wheel as my car headed straight for a fruit stand. My foot slammed on the brake; I needed to reduce my speed to below sixty before making any adjustments.
With a crash!
My car collided with the fruit stand, sending fruits flying everywhere before crashing into a noodle shop. My windshield was splattered with noodles and tomatoes.
Zhang Yuru bit her lip and shouted, "Song Fei! I've never even been in a relationship yet, and you're going to get me killed! You better compensate me in your next life!"
"Less talking! We're not going to die!" I began to steer again. This was a busy residential area in town, but thankfully there weren't many people around. I twisted the wheel and maneuvered through a row of stalls.
At that moment, Zhang Yuru glanced at the rearview mirror and exclaimed, "Oh no! They're coming after us again!"
I glanced back and saw the Toyota Prado continuing to chase me, barreling straight toward my car. A person leaned out of the passenger window, brandishing a submachine gun!
Without a second thought, I pressed the accelerator and sped forward, not caring whether the road ahead was clear.
“Tat tat tat tat…” Bullets rained down on my vehicle and tires, creating a cacophony of noise. Surprisingly, the car seemed completely unharmed!
I was truly impressed with this vehicle; my confidence surged. The engine roared as I sped down a muddy path, the car bouncing violently as if it might fall apart at any moment. Yet I dared not slow down. After a few kilometers, I suddenly encountered a series of rocky steps ahead. I realized this was going to be disastrous; it was truly a “car quake.” However, there was no choice—I slowed down and drove over those steps with a clattering sound.
The car bounced like it was practicing jumping, thumping down the steps.
Looking in the rearview mirror, I noticed that the Toyota Prado behind me didn’t dare to follow.
I let out a sigh of relief. Although my car was shaking violently, my life was the most important thing.
After bouncing down more than ten meters of steps, I finally reached the bottom. The car swayed as I continued driving. At a corner, I checked my navigation and turned onto another road, rumbling forward.
Zhang Yuru let out a long sigh of relief and patted her chest. “That really scared me! But Song Fei, is this car really a BYD? Such an impressive vehicle—I had no idea! After using it to crash into that monster last time, I wanted to buy one. Now it seems even more amazing!”
I shook my head while driving and replied, “It was given to me by a goddess; I don’t know much about it. At that time, she didn’t mention any model. I thought it was a BYD Tang, but now it’s clear that it’s definitely not.”
When we reached a stable area, I stopped the car.
“What’s wrong?” Zhang Yuru asked.
“I’m going to check the trunk for my gun and see how the car is holding up. I don’t want it falling apart while we’re driving,” I said.
I went to the trunk and pulled out my backpack. If I had had my Glock earlier, I could have fought back. Then I walked around the car for inspection; surprisingly, its condition was better than I had expected!
I got into the car and handed the Glock to Zhang Yuru. "Take this. If anyone dares to block our way again, just take them out, damn it!"
Zhang Yuru nodded. "This gun is pretty good. It's not made in some black workshop; it's factory assembled. Regular folks can't get their hands on something like this. Wow, Song Fei, I didn't realize you were such a big spender. Your car is impressive, and so is your gun. Quite something."
I chuckled lightly. With Zhang Yuru sitting in the passenger seat, I felt a bit more at ease. After all, she had graduated from the police academy and was a better shot than I was.
I drove straight into the city. Given the chaos that had just unfolded, I couldn't be bothered to report it; there was no point in filing a case that wouldn't help and would only delay my return to Donghai City.
In the car, I said, "Why did those people want to kill us? And you saw how relentless they were. If we had switched cars, we probably would have been done for."
Zhang Yuru looked puzzled as well. "Yeah, logically speaking, we haven't run into any trouble on our way here. We just arrived in this town and only asked that old lady for a cat. Is it really worth going this far over a cat?"
I couldn't make sense of it either.
We speculated about the reasons but couldn't come up with anything conclusive, so we decided to drop it for now.
Once we reached the city, I took out my phone to check for signal; it wasn't full strength yet, but at least there was something.
I dialed Liu Yiyi's number, and after a while, she finally picked up. "Song Fei, what's up?"
"Oh, nothing much. I just wanted to ask about that car you gave me—what's the deal with it? Is it really bulletproof?" I inquired.
Liu Yiyi paused for a moment before bursting into laughter on the other end. "Let me tell you! The BYD Boss was a gift from my grandfather. It's actually a modified car; BYD aims to create the safest vehicle possible. Your car is basically an earlier model of theirs."
As soon as I heard that, everything clicked into place. "I have to say, Liu Yiyi, you saved my life! I've decided—I owe you one and will repay your kindness."
"What's going on? Do you need my help?" Liu Yiyi asked with concern in her voice.
"I've temporarily escaped danger, let's talk more when we get back." I hung up the phone.
Zhang Yuru pouted and glanced at me sideways. "Song Fei, why are you so shameless? Offering yourself like that, ugh, it gives me goosebumps. I never thought your words could be even more pathetic than Zeng Xian's."
"You don't understand anything... Let's stay at the Emperor Hotel." I pointed in that direction. "It looks quite impressive, and their security should be good."
Zhang Yuru nodded.
We got out of the car, and by now it was already dark.
I put Heizi into an empty box and then pulled the box toward the hotel. When checking in, I requested two adjacent double rooms. It felt a bit wasteful to have two rooms for just us.
As we entered the elevator, Zhang Yuru looked at me. "Why do you want two double rooms? Wouldn't two single rooms be better?"
"Well, tonight we're sharing a room," I replied. "With Heizi here, it's better for both of us. I have a feeling those guys won't let us off easily."
"What are you planning?" Zhang Yuru immediately crossed her arms dramatically.
I slapped my forehead. "You silly woman, can you be serious for once? I'm discussing life-and-death matters here!"
Zhang Yuru rolled her eyes.
In the end, we stayed in the same room. After a simple meal at the hotel, we returned to our room.
It was still a bit chilly inside. We only took off our outer jackets and each slept on a separate bed. After a quick wash-up, we turned off the lights and went to sleep.
Heizi slept between us.
With Heizi around, both Zhang Yuru and I felt at ease.
I lay there for a while, finding it hard to fall asleep, so I thought about discussing tomorrow's itinerary with Zhang Yuru.
“Snore… gulp… snore…”
This woman had already started snoring!
I sighed; a woman with a carefree heart has the best life. She was so oblivious that she could fall asleep so quickly after nearly getting hit by a car. I pondered over the situation when I met that old lady. There was definitely something off about her; after all, Heizi went wild barking at her, which was certainly abnormal.
But she was still a person!
Then there was that Toyota Prado that showed up later, along with the Toyota RAV4 that I had crashed into. They must be connected to the old lady; otherwise, it was too coincidental. Just as Zhang Yuru and I left that house, two cars came chasing after us.
Lost in my thoughts, I eventually fell asleep.
Just as I was sleeping soundly, I suddenly felt something licking my neck.
I jolted awake and opened my eyes.
In the darkness, two bright eyes were staring back at me. I froze for a moment before realizing it was Heizi.
Heizi was licking me and making a low, rumbling sound in his throat.
I immediately understood what was happening and quickly flipped over to sit up, grabbing the Glock that was resting by the bed while reaching out to push Zhang Yuru.
Zhang Yuru was sleeping like a log.
I pushed her again.
"Ah!" Zhang Yuru jumped up suddenly, pointing at me. "You dead Song Fei! I knew it, I knew you would make a move on me in the middle of the night. Where are your hands going? Where are they going?"
"Shh..." I was exasperated with this silly woman and urged her to be quiet.
At that moment, with a loud bang, our room door was kicked open from the outside, and five people rushed in.
Zhang Yuru and I immediately rolled over and hid on the other side of the bed. I grabbed my handgun and noticed a red dot drifting around the room. Damn it, a laser sight—this is so professional!
I cursed under my breath.
"Police! The Anti-Vice Strike Team is in action! No one is to resist; otherwise, you will be shot on sight!" someone shouted from behind.
