Gravekeeper
I quickly interrupted the receptionist's chatter and said, "Could you just tell me the address of Ye Yun's house?"
The receptionist wrote down an address and handed it to me.
I took the note and hurriedly left. Creatures like the receptionist were terrifying; they were either bursting with energy or cold and aloof. Sigh!
I hailed a taxi and directed him to Ye Yun's home.
Ye Yun's place was quite far from the company, and the taxi ride took a full forty minutes. Jing Garden District was a fairly ordinary residential area, and because it was somewhat distant from downtown Shanghai, the prices were relatively cheap.
It seemed that Ye Yun didn't have much money. But thinking about it, working in Shanghai and buying a house on one's own was indeed quite challenging. Even with a monthly salary of over twenty thousand, it would be exhausting to buy a home.
I found Unit 3, Room 301, and pressed the doorbell.
No one responded.
I pressed it again.
Still no answer.
Feeling uneasy, I pressed the doorbell harder and knocked on the door.
With a creak, the door suddenly opened.
I let out a sigh of relief.
The door opened slightly, revealing a woman with disheveled hair standing inside. Her eyes were bleary, as if she had just woken up, and her hair was a mess. She looked at me and asked, "What is it?"
"Is this Ye Yun? Hello, I'm Song Fei," I quickly flashed a super cute smile.
However, it was clearly of no use. Ye Yun glanced at me and began to close the door.
I immediately stuck my foot in the doorframe. "Ms. Ye, I'm here because of that diamond."
Upon hearing this, a flicker of fear crossed Ye Yun's eyes. She looked at me again and swallowed hard. "How... do you know about that?"
I replied, "A customer who bought the ring has gone mad, and Xue Xiang Master Xue is dead. I had no choice but to come to you. I need to understand the origins of that diamond."
Ye Yun nodded. "Are you a Taoist?"
I paused for a moment before shaking my head. "I'm not a Taoist, but I've learned charms from Taoists and spells from monks, so my abilities are real."
"Alright then." Ye Yun opened the door wider.
I stepped inside.
Ye Yun turned around and locked the door tightly, even adding an extra bolt for security.
The room was messy and filled with a strong medicinal smell, a mix of traditional Chinese medicine and disinfectant. The air conditioning was on, blowing hot air; it was quite warm. With the heat on like this, it felt like one could easily suffer from heatstroke.
I took off my coat.
"Please have a seat; I'll get you a glass of water," Ye Yun said.
Ye Yun walked into the kitchen.
At that moment, I looked at Ye Yun. She was quite tall, probably around one hundred seventy centimeters. She was wearing a pair of tight leggings and a long-sleeved shirt on top, which showcased her figure beautifully.
I sat down and glanced at the air conditioner. It was set to thirty degrees, likely as high as the temperature outside, but it was blowing hot air, making it very uncomfortable.
Ye Yun came over with a glass of water. As she placed it down, she suddenly swayed and started to fall.
I was taken aback for a moment but instinctively caught her. My hand landed in an awkward spot—soft and firm—and I quickly moved it away, supporting her shoulder instead.
Ye Yun closed her eyes and slowly sat down on the sofa, taking deep breaths while gripping her hands tightly.
"What's wrong?" I asked, noticing that something was off with Ye Yun. However, she seemed quite aware, unlike Cuihua and Xue Xiang, whose symptoms were different.
Ye Yun held her head in her hands, gasping for breath in pain.
I felt helpless, unable to do anything but watch her suffer.
"Medicine! Medicine! Help me get the medicine!" Ye Yun cried out in distress.
"What kind of medicine?" I asked.
"Sleeping pills, sleeping pills, they're in my bedroom," Ye Yun replied.
Understanding immediately, I rushed to her bedroom and found a bottle of sleeping pills, bringing it back with me.
"Three pills, give them to me," Ye Yun said.
"Three!" I was a bit surprised. Such a powerful sedative could make someone drowsy with just one pill; three could suppress the central nervous system and lead to symptoms like difficulty breathing.
"Hurry!" Ye Yun gasped for breath.
I poured out three sleeping pills and handed them to Ye Yun.
She swallowed them, and after a while, it seemed like she was about to fall asleep. However, her breathing had noticeably become more even. She lay on the sofa, motionless, like someone who had passed out from drinking too much.
"Are you okay?" I asked.
Ye Yun kept her eyes closed. "While the medication hasn't fully taken effect yet, you should ask quickly. That diamond was indeed procured by me, and I regret it."
"What kind of diamond is it? Where did you get it?" I inquired.
Ye Yun remained with her eyes shut; she probably couldn't open them. Sleeping pills don't guarantee a deep sleep; their effect is somewhat like cold medicine. After taking them, your mind feels foggy, you want to sleep but may not rest well, and you feel lethargic. It's just that the effect of sleeping pills is many times stronger than cold medicine.
Ye Yun said, "British Ailey Manor. A terrible incident occurred there recently; both the master and mistress of Avery Manor died tragically. This diamond was given to me by the butler; it's called Void's Trace..."
Her voice was faint and intermittent, lacking coherence, but I understood some of it.
It seemed that this diamond was previously known as Void's Trace and belonged to Ailey Manor. After the master and mistress died, the butler took possession of it. Ye Yun must have bribed him or used some illegal means to acquire the diamond!
This also explained why such a priceless diamond was requested to be recut and polished again—to avoid being traced back!
I looked at Ye Yun on the sofa and asked, "What happened to you?"
Ye Yun kept her eyes closed and said, "That diamond was beautiful at first. After I bought it, I thought it was great, so I kept a few for myself before handing it over to the company. The diamond felt strange; sometimes I could hear something whispering in my ear from inside it. I became very scared. Later, I realized my mental state was clearly not normal, so I took a leave of absence. I sought treatment from a traditional Chinese doctor, took Chai Hu Shu Gan San, herbal medicine, and later sedatives. I even got medication for schizophrenia from a psychiatrist friend. Now I'm also taking sleeping pills. I'm struggling against another voice inside me; I'm very afraid. I know Teacher Xue jumped off a building; I'm scared that I might do the same..." As she spoke, Ye Yun began to cry softly. After a few moments, she lay there in a daze, seemingly unaware of her surroundings.
Three sleeping pills; that dosage is quite large. It's already impressive that I can recall the entire sequence of events.
I feel a bit sorry for this woman, but then again, this situation arose because of her greed.
Ye Yun fidgeted on the sofa, and eventually, she began to undress. It seemed she was feeling hot; her hands removed her shirt, and underneath, she wore nothing. Then she reached for her leggings.
Seeing this unfold made me uneasy, so I quickly walked over and held her hands down.
Ye Yun turned over in pain and fell onto the floor, then lay sideways on the carpet, truly asleep.
I shook my head; now I couldn't leave. This woman might really get into trouble. Looking at Ye Yun's body, I swallowed hard and hurriedly grabbed her shirt to cover her chest. To be honest, she looked to be around twenty-seven or twenty-eight years old, still quite attractive to me.
After covering Ye Yun's body, I sighed in relief. Then I took out the diamond ring from a Peach Wood Box.
Although the ring had been polished again, it was clear that it was very pure and beautiful. Holding the ring, I could feel a slight chill. Curses are indeed tricky; whether through my witchcraft or Taoist practices, they are difficult to deal with. To break one usually requires finding the source of the curse.
Avery Manor? England? Damn it, do I really have to go abroad? This could turn into quite a hassle.
After thinking for a moment, I set the ring down and took out my phone to call Qin Hai.
"What’s up?" Qin Hai asked.
I replied, "Hai Ge, I need to go abroad to England and want to get my passport processed quickly. Can you help me with that?"
"No problem. But if you want it expedited, there will be an extra fee. Just give me ten thousand yuan and send me copies of your documents; I'll take care of it for you. The results should be out in a day or two," Qin Hai said.
Hearing this, I said, "Alright, Hai Ge, you're a lifesaver."
"That's right," Qin Hai said with a smile.
I replied, "The copies of the documents are at my café. You can go pick them up; I can't go back right now. Please hurry, okay? Zhang Yuru is there; she knows the place."
"Got it, I'll hang up now. I'm busy here," Qin Hai said before ending the call.
I sighed in relief; it seemed that going abroad was indeed much simpler now.
I put down my phone and turned around, only to see Ye Yun standing by the sofa, holding that diamond ring. She was staring down at it, playing with the ring.
"Put it down!" I rushed over.
"Iisine!" Ye Yun suddenly looked up, her eyes bloodshot as she lunged toward me.
