The eagle flew lower and lower, and in my eyes, it seemed to grow larger with each passing moment. It was moving quickly, diving straight toward me.
I froze for a moment, unsure of what was happening.
At that moment, the surrounding Yin Yao suddenly jumped up one by one, rushing toward the eagle.
The eagle extended its claws and grabbed two Yin Yao, then soared back into the sky with a powerful flap of its wings.
The two Yin Yao screamed in terror as they were lifted into the air. Then, with a swift motion of its claws, the eagle released them, and they fell from the heights to the ground. Fortunately, they did not die upon impact.
I stared in shock.
What a fierce eagle!
But what was going on? It seemed like the eagle was coming straight for me.
Just then, the two Yin Yao crawled out from the ground, shouting loudly.
I still couldn't figure out what was happening.
At that moment, the eagle swooped down again.
Some of the Yin Yao lay flat on the ground while others, still resembling humans, picked up their weapons and aimed at the descending eagle.
The eagle dove down like a fighter jet before suddenly veering off to one side and flying away.
The Yin Yao seemed to have gone mad, surrounding the eagle relentlessly. Some even attempted to leap up and grab its wings.
I lay on the ground, wanting to laugh; however, considering I was about to die, I couldn't muster any amusement.
The Cosmic Pendant on my chest felt even hotter now, radiating an intense heat. I found it strange and reached down to touch my chest. At that moment, a dark figure suddenly emerged from behind a nearby hill.
The black monster rushed toward me at high speed.
I sat up abruptly, staring at the creature. It was a... dog!
I was taken aback. This black dog was engulfed in black flames, its eyes tinged with red. It looked just like a dog, but it was much larger, its size comparable to that of a strong lion.
Wait a minute, wasn't this the same black dog I had seen in the ancient tomb? I couldn't believe it had come out of the tomb along with the Yin Yao.
What had happened in the tomb?
As I pondered this, the black dog was already sprinting toward me.
"Aw..."
The surrounding Yin Yao also noticed the black dog and charged at it.
"Awwo..." The black dog lunged forward and bit off one Yin Yao's head in one swift motion. However, more Yin Yao surrounded it, their mouths open as they attempted to bite the black dog.
The area around the black dog's body was filled with dark flames. Although the Yin Yao couldn't bite into the dog's flesh, when they bit into the flames, it seemed to dim the color of the fire surrounding the black dog.
Watching this unfold, I suddenly understood: this black dog seemed to be here to save me!
The Cosmic Pendant on my chest grew even hotter. I realized that its warmth was likely due to the black dog rushing over. There seemed to be a connection between us—not between me and the dog specifically, but rather between the Cosmic Pendant and this black dog.
I stood up quickly. At that moment, the Big Black Dog had reached my side. It let out a growl and bit through the rope in my hand.
I reached out and grabbed onto the Big Black Dog's neck.
At first, I worried that I might get burned by its black flames, but soon I discovered that once I leaned against it, the flames enveloped me completely. At the same time, my Cosmic Pendant flew out, radiating warmth that reignited the previously weakened flames within me.
"Awwo..."
The black dog let out a loud bark and then took off running with me.
Around us, the Yin Yao were frantically snapping at us, but the black flames completely negated their attacks.
The black dog ran faster and faster, and I felt as if I was about to take flight. I clung tightly to the dog's neck.
Finally, just as the flames on my body were about to burn out, the black dog managed to break free from the encirclement of the Yin Yao.
Behind us, thousands of Yin Yao were crazily pursuing us.
The eagle swooped down again, this time grabbing me with its two claws, and I felt myself being lifted higher and higher into the air.
I didn't have a fear of heights, but today I was utterly exhausted. I was drained and hadn't had a drop of water or a grain of rice; I could barely hold on. As I looked down at the ground getting farther away, my mind went blank, and then I completely fainted...
In a daze, I felt someone stroking my head, and then someone was feeding me water—sweet glucose water.
I struggled a few times.
Finally, I managed to open my eyes.
In front of me was a woman dressed in leather. She looked to be around thirty years old, with a pretty face and bright eyes that were looking at me.
I swallowed hard; my mouth was sweet, so it seemed that this woman had indeed given me glucose water earlier.
"Thank you," I said as I sat up and looked at her. "But where am I?" I glanced around.
It appeared to be a tent.
The woman smiled at me and said, "You are in a mysterious place. By the way, how did you end up fainting here?"
"A mysterious place?" I was taken aback. All I remembered before losing consciousness was being grabbed by that eagle and lifted into the air; after that, everything went dark. I truly had no idea where I was now.
I said, "I remember being chased by a group of beasts I couldn't identify. I ran desperately, ran all night long, and eventually collapsed from exhaustion. After that, I lost consciousness. Where exactly is this place?"
The woman nodded as I finished speaking. "Well, it seems you're quite lucky because not many people come here. By the way, hello, I'm Zhou Ping. I took off your clothes earlier to bandage your wounds. I hope you don't mind."
"Uh..." I felt a bit embarrassed at her words and quickly replied, "Not at all, not at all. Feel free to look and touch."
Zhou Ping smiled.
At that moment, a man in his fifties or sixties walked into the tent. Despite his white hair, he looked quite healthy.
Zhou Ping called him "Dad."
The man nodded and looked at me, asking, "So you've woken up? I'd like to know how you ended up here."
I found it strange that this father-daughter duo was so concerned about this question. Where exactly was this place?
I recounted my earlier story once more.
The man nodded thoughtfully. "I see. How do you feel? Are you able to continue your journey?"
I tested my legs and found no issues. "I'm fine."
The man smiled and extended his hand toward me. "Hello, I'm Zhou Dafu."
"Ah? You're the one who buys gold jewelry?" I looked at the old man.
Zhou Dafu laughed heartily. "I don't run a gold shop; I own an antique store."
"I'm Song Fei," I said as I shook hands with Zhou Dafu.
Zhou Dafu smiled and said, "It's fate that brings us together. Come on, let's go have a meal."
A man walked into the tent again, dressed in a special camouflage uniform, with grenades strapped to his waist and military boots on his feet, a dagger tucked into one of the boots.
The man said, "It's time to eat. We need to get going before noon."
"Okay!" Zhou Dafu turned to me. "Come on, Song Fei, let's go together. I believe you'll want to travel with me."
I felt a bit confused.
The person at the entrance of the tent frowned. "Mr. Zhou, this isn't quite right. According to our contract, we are only supposed to protect you and your daughter. Why are we adding more people now? This isn't a tourist spot; if something goes wrong, we won't be responsible."
Zhou Dafu waved his hand and walked over to pat the man's shoulder. "Li Chao, don't be nervous. It's just an extra stranger joining us. This place is desolate; if we leave him behind, he'll surely be eaten by wolves. Let's go together."
I got dressed and stood up, feeling uneasy inside. Did that old eagle deliberately throw me into a place where these people could find me?
