Gravekeeper
At that moment, outside, Zhang Yuru shouted, "Song Fei, Song Fei, come out! Are you okay?"
Upon hearing this, I didn’t take a closer look and stuffed the Sunny Doll into my pocket before stepping outside. Two security guards approached us; they were quite polite, bowing as they said, "Sorry, sir, you can't enter here. We apologize for the trouble."
I nodded and didn’t clarify our identities, heading straight to the elevator with Zhang Yuru and the others.
Once we reached the elevator, I glanced back. The two security guards were using glue to seal up the tape. It seemed they didn’t want any trouble and hadn’t called the police at all.
"Did you get it?" Zhang Yuru asked.
I nodded. Standing in the elevator, we went directly to the sixth floor, where the guest rooms were located. We would be staying here tonight.
I pulled the doll out of my pocket. "Is this thing really the Sunny Doll? It looks like a child's toy."
As I spoke, I opened my hand and felt something damp. Looking down, I was shocked to see dark purple blood seeping from the Rag Doll's head, staining my hand. At that moment, Lin Fan was crouched in a corner, clutching her stomach in pain.
"What the hell!" I exclaimed, startled. I had thought it was just an ordinary Rag Doll, but I never expected it to be filled with this filthy blood.
"Lin Fan, are you okay?" Zhang Yuru was also quite frightened but needed to comfort Lin Fan first.
Lin Fan shook her hand to indicate she was fine.
Just then, the elevator creaked and stopped on the fifth floor. The doors opened to reveal a woman in a mink coat and stockings. She wore sunglasses and high heels that looked dangerously sharp, as if she might trip at any moment.
The woman stepped inside, removed her sunglasses, and upon seeing the Sunny Doll in my hand along with the blood, she paused for a moment before calmly turning around and pressing the button for the eighth floor. The eighth floor was for beauty treatments; she must have been heading there for some personal care.
I was worried about scaring this woman, but to my surprise, she remained calm.
The elevator continued to the sixth floor. When the doors opened, the three of us stepped out. At that moment, the Mink Coat Woman suddenly said, "You broke the Sunny Doll. You need to find the person who made it to lift the curse. Otherwise, it will be a hassle. Also, I’ve used that doll before, and I ended up with all sorts of ailments instead of having a child. I had to go to Japan and ask a High Talent to break the curse. If you want to have kids, it's better not to use these dubious methods; just go to a hospital for artificial insemination."
I turned to look at her.
She didn’t say much more; she pressed the elevator button and intended to leave.
I stepped into the elevator and blocked the door, asking, "Sister, do you know about this Sunny Doll?"
The woman took a step back, looked at me, and frowned slightly. "Isn't this used for seeking children?"
"Seeking children?" I was taken aback. "Can this thing really help with that?"
She waved her hand dismissively. "Don't ask me; even if I knew more, I wouldn't tell you. I'll just say that this doll is very dangerous—more so than the one I had before. You should quickly call the person who made it. Whatever they ask for, just pay it. Trust me, these Japanese sorcerers are quite nasty; if you don't pay them, just wait for trouble." With that, she pushed me out of the way and pressed the elevator button again, leaving.
The three of us stood outside the elevator in a daze.
Zhang Yuru said, "How can the Sunny Doll be associated with seeking children? Isn't it supposed to be for rain or peace?"
I replied, "First, let's help Lin Fan get some rest."
We found a room and went inside.
Once in the room, Lin Fan lay on the bed, gasping for breath. She looked at me and said, "Song Fei, please check if you're hurt. You’re not pregnant like me, are you?"
"..." I looked at Lin Fan, feeling speechless. However, her ability to joke around reassured me that she was likely okay.
Zhang Yuru was laughing uncontrollably beside me. "It seems that the tales of monster-catching are true. Hey, Song Fei, if you lay an egg, we will protect you and your child."
I set down my bag and took out a lighter, along with some Cinnabar and White Phosphorus. I sprinkled them onto the Sunny Doll, then lit it on fire and tossed it into the toilet. After that, I washed my hands vigorously. "I don't feel anything, but that blood had a strong Eerie Energy to it, and there seemed to be some Ghostly Energy as well."
Zhang Yuru and Lin Fan were sitting on the bed.
Lin Fan clutched her stomach. "Song Fei, am I really going to give birth to a ghost?"
I rolled my eyes. "Whether or not you give birth to a ghost baby, I don't know. But now I understand why you and Zhang Yuru became best friends—you’re both equally silly!"
Lin Fan and Zhang Yuru burst into laughter.
With that laughter, the tense atmosphere from earlier dissipated.
"Alright, it seems we've figured out the general situation. The bald guy got this Sunny Doll from Japan; he must have been seeking a child. When he suddenly got caught and handed this Sunny Doll to you, he probably had malicious intent right from the start. The tainted blood inside this Sunny Doll carries some Resentment; there must be some taboos involved—either it needs to be properly worshipped or carefully protected. The bald guy likely anticipated that you would throw away the Sunny Doll. He might be waiting to see us now."
Lin Fan and Zhang Yuru looked at me in surprise. Zhang Yuru asked, "Really? But he’s just a criminal; how could he have such deep schemes?"
I sighed. "These people are much smarter than we think; otherwise, they wouldn't be able to engage in such illegal ivory trading. China has strict regulations against this kind of thing. Alright, let's get some rest early tonight and see how things look tomorrow."
Zhang Yuru stood up. "Fine, as usual, you two can share the bed while I, the lonely single dog, will sleep on the sofa."
I laughed. "Great! We love having a single dog around."
After chatting for a while longer, we left the lights on and went to sleep.
During the night, there was another commotion as the ghost baby emerged again. However, with me present, it didn’t dare act recklessly; as soon as it appeared, it shrank back in. But I couldn't do anything about it; after all, the ghost baby was hidden inside Lin Fan's belly. If I were too forceful, Lin Fan could end up in danger too.
As soon as I woke up and had breakfast, I received a call from Chen Shan. He was quite concerned about my situation and had arranged to meet with the director of the Linshui City General Administration the night before. So, early in the morning, he called me.
I felt no hesitation; we had made plans, and we headed straight to the police station in Lanshan District.
When we arrived at the Lanshan District police station, Chen Shan was already there, standing next to a tall man. Chen Shan introduced him as Xiao Teng, the director of the Lingshui Municipal Bureau. We didn't engage in much conversation; after a brief introduction, we made our way to Hao Yun's office.
Upon entering the office, Hao Yun had just arrived and was wiping down his desk. When he saw us walk in together, he paused for a moment and said, "Oh, Xiao Teng, what brings you here?"
Xiao Teng chuckled a few times and replied, "Hao Yun, I'm here to introduce you to some friends. This gentleman is my old friend, the deputy director of the Donghai City Police Department, specializing in criminal investigations and also the captain of the Criminal Investigation Team. He's an experienced detective—Chen Shan; you should have met him before."
Hao Yun greeted Chen Shan.
Chen Shan smiled and said, "Director Hao, I'm here to ask you for a favor. This is Mr. Song Fei, someone I'm quite familiar with. He’s a practitioner of yin-yang theory. I know you might not believe in such things, but there are indeed cases I've personally experienced that make me believe in Mr. Song's abilities. Your subordinate, Lin Fan—right? She truly needs help, so I hope you can assist us. I'll treat you to lunch today; how does that sound?"
Hao Yun glanced at the three of us with a hint of frustration and turned to Xiao Teng. "Xiao Teng, do you... believe in this too?"
Xiao Teng squinted slightly and sighed. "Hao Yun, I come from the Criminal Investigation Division as well. In my younger days, I encountered some unsolvable cases. Honestly, I'd prefer not to believe it, but I know that supernatural phenomena definitely exist. You're from an administrative background; it's normal for you not to understand this. Regardless, just let them handle it while you observe quietly."
Hao Yun sighed again. "Alright then; although it's against protocol, who are you looking for?" She looked at Lin Fan.
Lin Fan replied, "He's bald; I don't know his exact name."
Hao Yun nodded and said, "Follow me to the detention center."
Those who have not yet been sentenced are kept in detention centers. Hao Yun instructed someone to bring out a notebook and then exclaimed, "Is this the person?"
I looked at the notebook; there was a photo on it—indeed it was a bald man named Liu Jin.
"That's him," Lin Fan pointed at Liu Jin.
Hao Yun frowned slightly. "This person is quite stubborn. Everyone else has confessed to their crimes, but he is still holding out. You won't let him have any opportunities, will you?"
"Let's see him first," I replied.
Hao Yun assigned a police officer to accompany me and Lin Fan into the interrogation room, while Hao Yun, Xiao Teng, and Chen Shan stood outside. They could hear and see what was happening inside the room.
I took a seat and waited.
After a while, a bald man in prison clothes walked in through the door at the back—it was Liu Jin.
Upon seeing the three of us, Liu Jin immediately broke into a smile.
