At the village entrance, I pointed at the car and said, "Uncle, you still have cars in your village?"
Zhou Ruyun's Father chuckled, "It's the young people from the city who come to play. Our leaders aren't doing well. If they were, they would develop some tourism or something, and we wouldn't be so poor. Nowadays, those city folks often drive here to camp on the nearby hills, barbecuing and whatnot. Some even come here to paint. But some of them are really shameless; I once saw a man and a woman, Big White, taking pictures completely naked. It's just disgraceful."
I couldn't help but laugh at the thought of them being chased away by the villagers for taking such risqué photos.
We walked a bit further when Zhou Ruyun's Father stopped and pointed to a ditch. "Right around there, Twenty Years Ago, I remember it clearly. Back then, there was no water here; it was a vast field of rapeseed flowers. When they bloomed, it was beautiful. That's where I discovered that female corpse. She was completely naked, with red and purple marks all over her body. I thought she must have been violated before she died. The corpse had been killed with either a knife or a hammer; her eyes were wide open, and it was terrifying."
As he spoke, Zhou Ruyun's Father halted again, unwilling to go any further. "Mr. Song, I won't go on. It's been so long; the body is long gone, and there's no need to search anymore."
I glanced at the area; now it was a swamp that was impossible to approach directly. I'd have to find a way around to get closer.
"Uncle, how do I get around?"
Zhou Ruyun's Father pointed to a distant hill. "You need to go over there. At night like this, Mr. Song, you really shouldn't go; I wouldn't dare either. It feels like something's out there—it's quite unsettling."
"It's fine; you can head back now. Thank you for your help; I'll go take a look myself."
Zhou Ruyun's Father nodded in agreement.
I made my way toward the hill. The swamp was quite expansive; it took me over half an hour to reach the slope on the other side before I could circle around to where the corpse had been found.
It was already dark, but the air was refreshingly crisp.
As I enjoyed the fresh air, suddenly there was a sound—“crack”—coming from behind a nearby rock.
I jumped in surprise.
Quickly, I crouched down and moved closer to the rock.
Behind it, in the night shadows, a black figure was slowly writhing on the ground.
I held my breath and looked closely, feeling a bit puzzled. This couldn't be a ghost, nor was it a Ghost Corpse. I didn't sense any Ghostly Energy. Could it be a wild bear? A wild dog?
Just as I was wondering, the shadow suddenly stood up.
I froze for a moment, then saw clearly that it was a person—apparently a woman.
"Ah!"
The woman suddenly screamed in my direction.
I jumped up and quickly said, "Don't scream! What are you screaming for? You scared me to death!"
"Thud!"
The girl sat down on the ground, looking at me in terror, gasping for breath and continuously rubbing her chest with her hands.
I hurried over and said, "I'm a good person. Miss, what are you doing here at this hour? You scared me half to death."
"You... you... you were hiding behind the rock! What do you want?" The woman stammered. From her voice, she sounded very young and spoke with a standard Mandarin accent.
I quickly replied, "My name is Song Fei. I'm here to... um, look for something. What about you? You're not from this village, are you?"
"My name is Wang Yan. I'm a freshman at Yancheng Business College. I came here with three classmates for an outing. The scenery here is beautiful, so we decided to stay overnight and head back tomorrow. We didn't bring enough food, so we were preparing to roast something ourselves." Wang Yan seemed like a straightforward girl. After all, she was just a freshman, recently out of her parents' protection—what kind of schemes could she have?
"I was just collecting firewood when I saw you hiding behind that big rock. You scared me to death," she complained.
We exchanged a few more words.
I said, "It's really not safe here at night; you'd better be careful."
"Wang Yan said, 'It's fine, we have plenty of people, and the tents aren't far. Come on, we're treating you to some barbecue.' He stood up and invited me to join him.
I thought for a moment; it would be good to ask them about the situation here, so I walked over with Wang Yan.
We walked a few dozen meters and crossed a small hill. Sure enough, there were four tents set up, and in the middle was a campfire. Wang Yan walked over, lit the fire, and added some firewood. The bonfire blazed to life, and there were also some cans nearby, though they were a bit cold, along with a fish.
I asked, 'Where are your classmates?'
'They went fishing and hunting for wild chickens, but I doubt they'll catch anything,' Wang Yan chuckled.
In the glow of the firelight, I noticed that Wang Yan looked quite attractive; he was probably the belle of their department.
Before long, the other three returned. They were all tall boys with innocent expressions, all freshmen without any bad intentions. When they saw me laughing with Wang Yan, they looked slightly displeased but didn't say anything and invited me to eat with them.
The three of them occasionally joked around to make Wang Yan happy.
Wang Yan was as casual with them as he was with me.
Seeing this scene made me feel that youth was truly wonderful; it was nice to be so pure at this age. If they were four adults instead, who knows what might happen?
I had some grilled fish and asked the three boys if they had encountered anything unusual. They all tried to show off their bravery in front of Wang Yan.
Seeing that I couldn't get much out of them, I decided not to press further. I just told them to take care and continued walking toward the area where I had discovered the female corpse.
The moon tonight was quite round, but it felt somewhat hazy.
Fortunately, my courage had really grown; having the Peach Wood Sword and Talisman on me gave me confidence. I stepped through the bushes toward the marshy area. I looked at the place where I had found the female corpse and sensed that there were no Eerie Energy fluctuations here anymore.
I squinted my eyes and searched around carefully but found nothing. Just as I was about to head back, a piercing scream suddenly echoed from afar!
I jolted upright; that was Wang Yan's voice!"
I sprinted towards the source of the commotion, certain that something was wrong. Could it be a Vengeful Spirit?
The cries grew increasingly desperate, as if someone were being choked.
I ran as fast as I could, already gripping my Peach Wood Sword in hand. I retraced my steps, heading straight for the Campfire.
Upon reaching the Campfire, the sight before me shocked me. Three boys were pinning Wang Yan down beside the fire, clearly intending to commit a heinous act! Their movements were rough, and they had even torn Wang Yan's burlap dress to shreds. The remnants of her dress were thrown into the Campfire, sending up plumes of gray smoke.
Wang Yan screamed in agony, one of the boys had his hands around her neck, and the three of them seemed to have lost their minds.
I immediately shouted, "Hey! What are you doing? Let her go!"
One of the boys turned to look at me, his eyes wide and devoid of sanity. His hands were clawing at the air as if trying to gouge out someone's eyes!
Realizing he was possessed by a spirit, I charged forward with my Peach Wood Sword and struck one of the boys in the back.
He collapsed to the ground, screaming in pain. Looking at me, his eyes were completely white, like a ghost that had been choked to death.
My strike only elicited a scream from him; he didn’t regain his senses. He yelled and then turned to flee towards the mountains.
The other two boys also released Wang Yan and ran after him.
I immediately lifted my legs to pursue them.
"Ah!"
Wang Yan was still screaming in terror on the ground. Her clothes had been burned by the Campfire; her long dress was completely gone, and underneath she wore a tattered tank top that barely covered her skin.
I hurried to comfort her. "It's okay, stop screaming. You're safe now."
Wang Yan looked up at me and then clung to my leg, trembling uncontrollably. I knew she wasn't cold; she was scared.
I took off my coat and draped it over Wang Yan. "You wait here. I need to chase those three people and find the Vengeful Spirit, or else your three classmates are doomed."
Wang Yan shook her head, her teeth chattering. "No, no! I... I can't leave you. I want to go with you."
"Alright then, but we need to hurry. Button up the coat first, and let's go."
Wang Yan fumbled as she tried to put on my coat, but she was trembling so much that she couldn't fasten it.
Sighing, I helped her put on the coat and button it up. Nowadays, girls really don't know fear unless they've been through something. In this wild place, those four of them were quite bold to camp here. Especially Wang Yan—a girl as beautiful as she was—running off to camp with three boys was quite reckless.
I didn't have time to think about her figure as I finished helping her with the coat and pulled her along in the direction the three boys had fled. Wang Yan was wearing a bodysuit underneath; although it had been torn a bit, it held up well enough.
Fortunately, this meant Wang Yan wouldn't have to run after me with bare legs.
