We secretly opened the door to Zhou Ruyun's room and installed a camera. Of course, the camera couldn't see what was happening on the bed; after all, we weren't peeping Toms.
That night, Qin Hai and I sat in front of the monitor, watching the screen. Everything seemed normal until just past midnight when suddenly, the screen shook.
As Qin Hai yawned and tried to stay awake, we both straightened up at the same time when the screen jolted.
On the screen, Zhou Ruyun emerged in her pajamas. She tested the door and then unexpectedly pulled it open. Barefoot, she dashed outside, her eyes rolling back in her head, completely devoid of color. Her fingers were moving as if she were digging for something.
The high-resolution camera captured everything clearly. I realized that she was indeed possessed by Vengeful Spirits.
"Let's go catch her; I'll exorcise the spirits," I said.
Qin Hai and I prepared to head toward the prison when suddenly, we saw Zhou Ruyun sprinting in the surveillance video. She moved incredibly fast, leaping like a spirit cat over the outer wall of the detention center before jumping down and running away.
"What the hell! Quick, chase her, or there will be a murder!" I exclaimed as I took off after her.
As I ran outside, I realized that both Qin Hai and I had underestimated one thing: this was no ordinary Zhou Ruyun. Her speed and strength surpassed that of a grown man.
We chased after her and saw Zhou Ruyun sprinting barefoot down a road. Her running style was bizarre, resembling a stiff-limbed person racing at high speed. Despite its oddity, she maintained an incredible pace, almost like a hundred-meter dash, quickly putting dozens of meters between us.
At that moment, there were few cars on the road. Under the dim streetlights, occasional pedestrians hurried by with their heads down.
Seeing Zhou Ruyun in her nightgown sprinting down the street frightened some people so much that they hid behind nearby walls, too scared to come out.
Qin Hai chased after her, panting heavily. "What the hell! What's going on? How can that woman run so fast? No, wait, why is she walking so quickly? Where is she headed?"
I shook my head and said, "Hurry up and chase her! You need to flag down a car. Damn it, the two of us can't catch up with her. Move it!"
As Qin Hai ran, he looked around for a car to stop.
A red Chevrolet sped past us. Qin Hai dashed over to intercept it, but the driver kept honking the horn, clearly unwilling to stop.
Determined, Qin Hai stood in the middle of the road and forced the car to a halt.
He slapped the side of the vehicle.
The driver got out—a heavily made-up woman. She raised her hands and exclaimed, "Don't kill me! I'll do anything you want, just don't kill me!"
Qin Hai rolled his eyes and pulled out his Police Badge. "We're police officers. There's an emergency situation ahead, and we need to use your car. Can you help us out?"
The woman sighed in relief but immediately started cursing. "What the hell! Are you out of your minds? Do you know how scary it is at night? I'm trying to go to sleep and don't have time to deal with you useless cops!" With that, she yanked open the car door and prepared to get back in.
Qin Hai was taken aback; he clearly hadn't expected this outcome. At first, the woman had seemed pitifully desperate for mercy, but upon realizing we were police officers, her attitude did a complete 180!
I was getting anxious watching Qin Hai stand there dumbfounded. I rushed over, pulled the woman out of the car, and slid into the driver's seat.
"Hey! What are you doing! I'm going to report you!" she shouted loudly.
I shouted, "Damn it, go ahead! I'm not in cahoots with that idiot cop. I'm a robber, specializing in car theft, not in anything else!"
The woman was taken aback for a moment, then quickly replied, "Sir, please have mercy. I just bought this car and it just got registered. Stealing my car won't do you any good. How about you rob someone else and then return the car to me?"
I couldn't help but laugh at her absurdity. I yelled at Qin Hai, "What are you standing there for? Get in the car already!"
Qin Hai immediately hopped into the passenger seat.
I was ready to drive off.
Seeing no other option, the woman opened the back door and climbed in.
I ignored her, released the handbrake, slammed on the gas, and sped off in pursuit of Zhou Ruyun ahead.
Zhou Ruyun was wearing pajamas and walking down the street when she suddenly turned and dashed straight through a greenbelt.
I saw this and quickly turned the steering wheel to follow her into the greenery.
The quality of the Chevrolet really wasn't that great; it couldn't compare to domestic cars and was even worse than Japanese ones. As we bumped along, something clunked underneath, and I had no idea what had scraped off.
The woman in the backseat tugged at my hair, complaining, "You idiot! Can you drive normally on a proper road?"
"What the hell! Let go of my hair or I'll kill you!" I shouted back.
The woman released her grip.
I turned to Qin Hai, "Stop dawdling, think! Is there anyone's house nearby? Those people from the information we have—does anyone live in this area?"
Crash!
The car came out from the green belt and sped after Zhou Ruyun. However, Zhou Ruyun jumped right over a barrier in the middle of the road. No matter how powerful my car was, it couldn't jump over that; I had to take a detour. I was worried about losing Zhou Ruyun, which is why I asked Qin Hai to think of anyone from the data who might live nearby.
Qin Hai pulled out a tablet from his pocket, opened it, and checked. Then he exclaimed, "There's one! What the hell! This is huge—it's Tax Bureau Director Shen Shaohua, a bureau-level official. Song Fei, what if something happens? If something goes wrong, my career as a cop is over!"
"Don't worry, just tell me the exact address."
Qin Hai replied, "It's just ahead in that district. Zhou Ruyun crossed through the isolation zone to get there."
"Damn it!" I cursed loudly. "Call Shen Shaohua and tell him to get down here quickly and hide!"
Qin Hai grabbed his phone and quickly dialed Shen Shaohua's number. He called once but no one answered. He tried again, and this time an angry voice came through, "Who is this?"
Qin Hai had it on speakerphone and looked at me. After all, he was a police officer and didn't dare to speak harshly to Shen Shaohua.
I didn't care about any official status; I spoke directly into the phone, "Director Shen, right? Right now, I need you to get dressed immediately and come downstairs to meet the Disciplinary Inspection Group."
"Are you crazy?" Shen Shaohua snapped back angrily. "I don't care who you are; you're breaking the law right now! Where did you get my number?"
It seemed I couldn't intimidate Shen Shaohua after all, and I was starting to feel anxious. Just then, the woman in the back seat suddenly spoke up, "Director Shen, it would be wise for you to cooperate. Otherwise, we'll just pay a visit to your home. If I run into your wife, things could get messy."
"Who are you?" Shen Shaohua shouted from the other side.
The woman replied, "Oh dear, you really are a forgetful big shot. I'm your acquaintance from Elegant Pavilion. Don't you remember?"
"Bastard! Wait downstairs!" The person on the other end hung up.
Qin Hai and I were both taken aback. I turned to look at the woman in the back seat. "Do you know this Director Shen?"
She scoffed, "Know him? Not really. But honestly, there aren't many officials above the department level who haven't been to our Elegant Pavilion. Once they step inside, it's hard to find a cat that doesn't stray."
I realized that this woman worked at Elegant Pavilion, which must be a high-end club catering to people of status.
I pressed down on the accelerator, and the car roared as we sped toward the district. When we reached the entrance of the district, I spotted Zhou Ruyun in her pajamas, already at the foot of Building Three—the very building where Shen Shaohua lived!
I slammed on the gas, and the Chevrolet surged forward, quickly arriving at Building Three.
At that moment, Zhou Ruyun was already dashing upstairs in her pajamas.
"Wow, who is that? She's really going for it," the woman in the back remarked. "Running around in pajamas at night? That's quite bold."
I parked the car and said, "Get out quickly. Damn it, Hai Ge, do you have your gun? If it comes down to it, we might have to shoot."
Qin Hai was aware of the urgent situation. He pushed open the car door and jumped out, and the two of us ran toward Building Three.
Halfway there, we saw a man in a long, thin trench coat coming down. He looked to be in his forties and appeared very capable. Standing there in his coat, he spotted us and coldly snorted, "Are you the ones who called me?"
I recognized him immediately; it was Shen Shaohua. I breathed a sigh of relief. "Great! I'm so glad you're okay. You came down in the elevator, right?"
"Of course!" Shen Shaohua replied tersely, pointing at me. "I don't care who you are, but please don't interfere with my family. Also, don't think you can use anything related to Elegant Pavilion to blackmail me. Let me tell you, I walk a straight path! Yes, I've been to Elegant Pavilion, and yes, I've touched women, but I paid for it! I only went once! I don't care if you're from the disciplinary committee or what you want to do! Just get out!"
I hadn't expected Shen Shaohua to be so tough. It seemed he really didn't have any dirt on him; otherwise, he wouldn't be speaking like this. The position of Tax Bureau Director is quite sensitive—more so than that of a police chief—and is historically prone to corruption.
I thought Shen Shaohua wasn't too bad after all. "Alright, Director Shen, we're not here to extort you; we have other matters to discuss. Someone wants to kill you, which is why we called you down."
"Hmph, keep acting. Keep pretending. Let's see what you really want," Shen Shaohua said disdainfully as he looked at us.
