We quickly finished our meal, and then Qin Hai took me to the police station.
Upon arriving at the Criminal Investigation Division, Qin Hai handed me a folder. "It's about Donghai University of Art next door to your school. They reported a case this morning; two students died last night under mysterious circumstances. The other two girls in the dormitory are already terrified and have gone a bit crazy."
"What's the reason?" I asked.
"You'll need to see for yourself. However, both students died after watching a Death Disk they bought online. You college students really have too much free time on your hands—why would you watch something like a Death Disk?" Qin Hai muttered.
I was a bit puzzled. "What is this Death Disk? Let me see it. Also, has the scene been tampered with? We should check it out, and I want to meet those two dorm mates later."
Qin Hai paused, looking at me before he burst into laughter. "Alright, Song Fei, you're starting to sound like our captain. Fine, let's check out the Death Disk first. It's right here. Honestly, I haven't dared to watch it myself; I'm afraid it’s like The Grudge—everyone who watches it ends up dead."
"You actually believe that!" I laughed heartily.
Qin Hai chuckled and went to the evidence room to retrieve a disc, which he handed to me. We entered a room in the police station, turned on the lights, and began playing the disc.
The video was quite short; it started with a woman in white clothing brushing her hair, reminiscent of The Grudge. Then she pulled her hair back, revealing a faceless woman with blood all over her face. She stood up and knelt on the ground, desperately clawing at it. Soon, numerous baby corpses appeared on the floor—each one gruesome, their bodies covered in blood except for their faces, which remained intact and bore expressions of terror.
After unearthing the babies, the woman began to dig into their insides with her hands and eat them while they continued to cry...
Honestly, this film seemed fake to me; at least from my perspective, it had too many plot holes. It felt like someone deliberately made this kind of movie just to disgust people. However, the production quality was quite good; it seemed they used some advanced filming techniques that created an immersive experience.
Qin Hai had already clung to my arm and started trembling. Eventually, he was so scared that he simply looked down and refused to watch.
I shook him off. "You have no guts at all."
"It's not about courage; this film is just a bit terrifying. Let's turn it off," Qin Hai said.
I reached for the remote to stop the player when suddenly the final scene appeared: the woman opened her bloody mouth wide and lunged at me; she had regained her face. Her mouth was so large that it swallowed the entire screen before the disc ended.
I turned off the player and frowned. "It's not about the disc itself; it's just a bit gory. Sure, the filmmaker used some clever techniques, but there’s nothing wrong with it. I didn’t see any ghosts or feel any Ghostly Energy at all."
Qin Hai let out a sigh of relief. "Alright, alright, whatever you say. You really scared me there. Let's go check the scene, or we can look at the bodies first."
Qin Hai took me to the Forensic Department, where the staff were busy performing autopsies on two female bodies. He pointed at the corpses on the table. "These are the two girls—freshmen who just started last year. It's hard to believe their college life ended so soon."
I examined the bodies on the table, which were in disarray from the autopsy. However, I could still tell that they were both tall girls, typical of students from the Art Academy.
Noticing I couldn't discern much, I asked the forensic doctor for more information.
The doctor spoke up, "One died from a fall, and the other drowned in a toilet. There's no doubt about it; neither had taken any drugs or unusual substances before death..."
I looked again at the two girls' bodies but couldn't find anything unusual. Feeling uncertain, I turned to Qin Hai. "Let's go check the crime scene. Right now, I can't confirm that this is supernatural; at least so far, I don't see any connection to the disc."
We left the police station and headed toward Donghai University of Art. The school wasn't far from ours, and students from our university often envied the boys from across the street because all the students at that art school were tall and attractive. In summer, those girls wore very short outfits that made them look stunning.
Qin Hai led me directly to the entrance of the art university, where a line of luxury cars was parked. Here, even BMWs seemed like low-end vehicles; it was hard to take in.
"Where do all these luxury cars come from?" I muttered and turned to Qin Hai.
He chuckled. "Without luxury cars, how could they attract beautiful women? This is an art university; about thirty percent of graduates end up as mistresses. The people driving these cars are basically recruiting."
I shot him a glare. "You seem to know a lot about this; you haven't thought about it yourself, have you?"
"What good would that do? Our director drives a Passat; if he parked here, people would think he had bodyguards inside."
We both laughed and drove into the campus, arriving at the Girls' Dormitory. A dorm supervisor was already waiting for us.
She led us to the fifth floor and room 505. Upon entering, we found a messy dormitory where two girls were busy tidying up clothes.
Qin Hai pointed to one of them. "This is Tang Yi; she reported the case first. This one is Wang Cuihua, her roommate."
I glanced at Tang Yi; she was clearly from a wealthy family, wearing a Burberry trench coat with an expensive handbag. She had no makeup on and didn't look particularly attractive without it.
The woman named Wang Cuihua seemed somewhat out of place in this university. Her clothes and shoes were very plain, perhaps overly so, suggesting that her family circumstances were not very good.
I nodded and asked, "What were you doing when the incident occurred?"
Tang Yi spoke up, "Cuihua and I were both asleep. Cuihua usually sleeps very soundly. I was listening to music and forgot to turn off my headphones, so I didn't know what happened in the dormitory. It wasn't until early the next morning that I saw... saw that something had happened to the two of them."
I glanced at the dormitory window and then checked the bathroom. "Was there anything strange that happened last night?"
Wang Cuihua had been quite silent, like a shy girl, while Tang Yi continued, "As for strange things, we watched that DVD together. The three of us were scared; Cuihua bought the DVD, and someone said not to watch it. But we did watch it. The first one to run away was Wang Cuihua; she was so frightened that she went to bed. The second was me; I found it disgusting and couldn't sleep, so I put on my headphones and listened to music while they kept watching, eating, and chatting. After that, I don't know what happened..."
After listening to Tang Yi's words, I felt a bit puzzled and looked at Qin Hai. "Could it really be related to that DVD?"
Qin Hai shrugged. "How would I know? However, our technical staff at the police station is already investigating the producer of the DVD. It seems he is not too far from Donghai City; according to the shipping address, he should be around Wuxi."
I thought for a moment and felt a bit troubled. Subjectively, I believed this incident had nothing to do with the DVD since I hadn't sensed anything from it—no trace of Ghostly Energy at all. But for now, there were no other leads, so I could only follow this clue about the DVD; perhaps it would lead to some discovery.
The dormitory manager said, "Um, Officer Comrade, I remembered some things that happened before..."
Just then, Wang Cuihua on the bed suddenly screamed. She covered her head and curled up on her bed, crying out, "I will never do this again! I won't buy any more DVDs! Please spare me! Spare me!"
Wang Cuihua's voice was heart-wrenching, startling all of us. I looked at her and said, "Classmate, are you okay? There's no need to be afraid; it's just Big White. Your scream scared us all."
Wang Cuihua got up quickly to pack her things. "I... I want to go home. I really want to go home! I don't want to stay here anymore."
Qin Hai comforted her, "Don't be afraid; you can stay in a hotel or somewhere else tonight. We will find out what happened."
I nodded and then turned to the dormitory manager, asking, "Auntie, what were you saying earlier?"
The manager paused for a moment before replying, "Oh, nothing much. These kids are indeed scared; I hope you can solve the case soon."
I nodded again and said to Qin Hai, "Alright then, let's head to Wuxi."
I went downstairs with Qin Hai, preparing to head to Wuxi. At that moment, Chen Shan also approached us, wanting to join.
On the way, I asked, "Brother Chen, how can you be so sure that this case was caused by a ghost? It seems like a supernatural murder case. You rarely make such deductions."
Chen Shan was by the window, taking a puff of his cigarette. "Do you know how difficult it is to drown someone in a toilet?"
"Uh?" I truly didn't know.
Chen Shan continued, "To drown someone in a toilet is nearly impossible because a person struggles fiercely before dying; it's a survival instinct. Moreover, there's not much water in a toilet, so even slight movements can allow them to breathe. However, that girl died in the toilet and drowned, yet there are hardly any signs of struggle on her body. This... should be the work of a Demon Slayer."
I understood now. It seemed that Chen Shan's deduction about this case wasn't based on some murder video but rather on his professional knowledge of criminal law.
I said, "Brother Chen, I have a gut feeling that this case might not be so simple. We might return empty-handed this time; that video looked pretty normal to me."
"Regardless, let's go take a look first," Chen Shan replied as he tossed away his cigarette butt.
