I immediately raised my hand without a second thought.
The voice sounded somewhat familiar, but I couldn't recall who it was at that moment.
"Tap, tap, tap..."
A series of footsteps approached, and then someone twisted my arm, snapping handcuffs onto me.
A police officer?
I felt a bit puzzled.
I slowly turned my head to look at the person behind me, and I was stunned to see that it was A Cai! He was the grandson of Fourth Uncle!
"It's you?" I stared at A Cai.
A Cai looked cold and casual as he held a gun in the ticket office of this town, pointing it at me. "If you dare to shout, I'll shoot you," he said, waving his hand dismissively.
Then several people surrounded me and began to push me outward. It was at that moment I noticed that among them was the female driver! Although I didn't see Professor Zhao Jian or Buzz Cut, I was already certain that A Cai was the boss of these people!
My mind started piecing everything together; this was all a scam!
Zhao Jian had contacted me voluntarily and brought me here for some so-called adventure, but he was actually acting under A Cai's orders! And A Cai had been serving Fourth Uncle for years; he knew all about my grandfather's affairs and my background.
So, the mastermind behind all this was actually A Cai!
A Cai led the group outside where a van was parked. Someone yanked my hair and shoved me into the vehicle, which then drove off into the distance.
I glanced around; there were six people in the van. A Cai and his crew had gotten into another vehicle. Including A Cai, the female driver, Zhao Jian, and Buzz Cut, their team consisted of at least ten people!
I didn't dare to struggle, fearing a beating, and even more afraid of losing my life here.
The van drove quickly, soon starting to bump along the road. Before long, the vehicle came to a stop, and I was dragged out once again.
I glanced around; we were on a steep slope. The driver's skills were quite impressive—if we went any further, the van would surely tumble down the hill.
They pulled me deeper into the mountains.
After about two hours of walking, they finally stopped.
Not long after, A Cai arrived with the female driver. Shortly after, I saw Zhao Jian and Buzz Cut running toward us from another direction.
Buzz Cut spotted me and rushed over, delivering a kick right to my stomach.
With a thud, I was sent rolling on the ground several times by that bastard's kick.
"Damn it, you think you're tough now? Still trying to run? I'll kick you to death today!" Buzz Cut shouted as he aimed another kick at my chest.
"Enough!"
A Cai suddenly spoke up.
Buzz Cut froze, not daring to say another word.
A Cai approached me, looking down coldly.
I was furious too and glared back at A Cai. "What do you mean? You bastard! What do you want by tying me up here? And give me back my accessory!"
A Cai merely chuckled lightly, a hint of disdain in his voice. "I actually want to ask you where you hid that accessory."
I sat up, no longer caring about anything. If I was going to die, then so be it. That damn bastard had already killed his grandfather, and now he was coming after me.
"Hey, you've got me captured now, and you're still acting so arrogant. Do you really need to deny it? If you could kill your own grandfather, why wouldn't you admit to stealing something from me?"
A Cai sneered and then kicked me hard in the chest.
"Thud!" I spat out a mouthful of blood, feeling as if I might cough up my lungs.
A Cai waved his hand. "Uncuff him. If he tries to escape, just shoot him and take his blood."
"Got it!" Buzz Cut responded eagerly, grinning as he said, "Boss, I suggested this a long time ago. Why bother with all the trouble of bringing him here and scheming? Just take his blood directly and get on with it."
A Cai glanced at Buzz Cut. "Come here."
"Huh?" Buzz Cut looked a bit frightened but still walked over to A Cai.
Suddenly, A Cai kicked out, sending Buzz Cut flying back more than ten meters.
"You let him escape while you were supposed to be watching him. This is your punishment. Be more vigilant in the future; don’t underestimate anyone."
"Th-thank you, Boss... cough cough." Buzz Cut struggled to get up, coughing repeatedly. He shot a glance at me filled with hatred.
I hadn’t expected A Cai to be such a person; it seemed he truly had a deep mind. Even Fourth Uncle had underestimated him!
A female driver approached and uncuffed me.
At this point, I really didn’t dare to escape. If I tried to run, I was sure that Buzz Cut or someone else would shoot me without hesitation.
Meanwhile, someone had set up a pot with wooden sticks and was cooking something that smelled quite good—instant noodles or something similar.
I had resigned myself to the situation, so I walked over and sat down next to the pot.
"Get lost!" Buzz Cut pushed me.
This guy had just kicked me, and now he was seriously injured. Taking advantage of the moment, I kicked his leg.
Don't be fooled by how A Cai kicked Buzz Cut away with one blow; my kick also had some force behind it, but hitting Buzz Cut's leg ended up hurting my own foot.
Buzz Cut was furious and raised the basin in his hand, ready to smash it down on me.
"Stone!" A Cai said calmly.
Buzz Cut immediately hesitated.
A Cai pointed at me and said, "You sit there. Since your grandfather treated me well back in the day, I'll take care of you."
I rolled my eyes at Buzz Cut and sat down. Looking at A Cai, I said, "You really shouldn't mention my grandfather. If you do, I honestly feel even more frustrated. If he knew you were such a jerk, stealing my things and killing Fourth Uncle, he would definitely rise from his grave in anger."
A Cai merely scoffed and replied, "You don't understand anything. Don't think that my grandfather, the so-called Fourth Uncle everyone talks about, is some kind of good person. And don’t think your grandfather is a good man either."
I glared at A Cai.
A Cai waved his hand dismissively and said, "Give him a basin; let's eat."
The large pot was quite big. With A Cai and ten others, there were a total of eleven of us gathered around to scoop noodles from it for dinner.
However, there were quite a few rules during the meal. A Cai scooped first, followed by Zhao Jian, the female driver, and Buzz Cut. Only after them could the rest of us serve ourselves. Moreover, after getting their noodles, the others voluntarily stood back to eat. The only ones allowed to sit next to the iron pot were A Cai, Zhao Jian, the female driver, Buzz Cut, and of course, me.
I had no idea what was being cooked in that pot, but it certainly tasted delicious.
I was also hungry, devouring the noodles.
Zhao Jian picked up a piece of cured meat from the pot and placed it into my Iron Basin.
The cured meat smelled delicious. I initially wanted to refuse it with dignity, but then I thought it was unnecessary.
As I ate the cured meat, I looked at Zhao Jian and said, "Professor Zhao, you really are something. As an archaeology professor, you can mingle with this group of Tomb Raiders and even recognize a thief as your leader. I admire you."
Zhao Jian simply smiled. "Song Fei, I know you harbor resentment, but once you reach my level, you'll understand that any ethics or laws cannot compare to the beliefs in my heart."
"Oh! You have beliefs too!" I was indeed filled with resentment. A university professor, renowned throughout China, was associating with people like A Cai.
Zhao Jian replied, "Of course. It's just that some people believe in ethereal deities, some worship money, and others desire women and power. I have my own beliefs; I don't want money or fame. What I seek is... the truth."
"The truth?" I stared at Zhao Jian in a daze, surprised by his words.
Zhao Jian chuckled softly. "Yes, the truth—the historical truth that transcends time, cutting through layers of fog to sweep away the bloodshed and lies, pursuing nothing but the truth."
I found myself momentarily speechless.
Zhao Jian continued, "For this truth, I'm willing to do anything. I could sacrifice my own life; what does reputation matter? Of course, in the pursuit of belief, one might do things that harm others—like tricking you into coming here and possibly sending you to your death. But what does it matter? I only care about my beliefs."
"Damn..." was all I could manage to say.
A Cai chuckled and turned to me. "Song Fei, don't you want to know the truth? For instance, about your origins?"
"Of course I do, but right now I really don't want to because I'm about to be killed by you all!" I added quickly, "A Cai, since I'm about to die anyway, could you return my accessories? You can take them after I'm gone."
A Cai frowned as he looked at me. "I really didn't take that thing. Well, fine; I did plan to take it. The night you were sleeping in your room, I had someone use a sleeping gas and went into your room to retrieve that Cosmic Pendant. However, I couldn't find it. So I'm curious—where did you hide it?"
"I really didn't take it," I said, looking at A Cai. I knew he wouldn't lie to me now, nor would he look down on me by doing so. I continued, "That's strange; I always thought you had taken it. It was right in my hand before I fell asleep."
A Cai glanced at me for two seconds before returning to his meal.
I lowered my head to eat as well. At least if I could fill my stomach before the end, that wouldn't be too bad.
As I ate, a sudden thought struck me! Could it be that the Cosmic Pendant... had somehow entered my body?!
Yes! That seemed very possible!
Ever since that night, strange voices had been echoing in my mind. Every time I slept, I would hear the sound of hooves and cries, and I couldn't understand why.
Could it really be like that?!
I continued eating while pondering this, but then decided not to dwell on it any longer. Regardless of whether the Cosmic Pendant had entered my mind or not, I wouldn't tell A Cai about it. What I needed to focus on now was how to escape, and where exactly A Cai and his group were headed...
