The mountain range was unfamiliar, and the path was quite difficult to navigate.
Zhao Jian and the other two carried large backpacks, filled with who knows what, but they looked heavy. Even the woman among them had a hiking pack that stood nearly a meter tall.
Despite their burdens, the three of them moved quickly. I was panting heavily, struggling to keep up with them.
By noon, we stopped to eat a bit. Zhao Jian handed me a bottle of oral solution and urged me to drink it, claiming it would help with my cold by evening.
I thanked Zhao Jian but didn’t drink it. My training in traditional Chinese medicine taught me that treating a cold often involves sweating it out. With the weight of my pack and the exertion of walking, I was already drenched in sweat; if it were a cold, I would likely be fine soon enough.
I discreetly poured the solution onto the ground. It was kind of Zhao Jian to offer it, but I had to get rid of it without him noticing.
After lunch and a brief rest, we continued on our journey.
The three of them were mostly silent, leaving me no choice but to keep my head down and push forward over the mountains.
As dusk approached, we descended from a large mountain into what seemed like a valley. In the distance, I could hear the occasional cries of wild beasts echoing through the air.
I swallowed hard.
At that moment, the woman raised her hand and said, “Alright, let’s stop for now.”
It seemed she was the leader of this expedition.
I was breathing heavily, feeling waves of dizziness wash over me for some reason.
Everyone set up their tents, preparing to rest.
I finished setting up my tent and ate some Dried Rations. Soon, a wave of dizziness hit me, and I felt the urge to sleep.
Damn, why hasn’t this Cold gotten any better?
I muttered to myself, lay down, and quickly fell asleep.
I don’t know how long I slept, but soon the sounds of battle began echoing in my mind, a noise that made me quite uncomfortable.
I woke up startled from my dream, rubbed my head, and felt parched.
I reached over to my backpack, found my water bottle, and took a sip.
After drinking some water, I felt much better.
At that moment, voices came from outside.
I lifted the tent flap and looked out. Not far away was a Campfire where three people were sitting and chatting—it was Zhao Jian and his companions.
I got up intending to walk over when I heard the young man say, “Red Sister, I think that guy seems pretty ordinary. Could he really be the key?”
The woman replied, “We just need to follow what the boss instructed.”
The young man chuckled, “That’s true. But I think it would be easier to just cut his throat and take his blood. Bringing a living person into that ancient tomb is just too troublesome.”
“Shut up! Don’t let him hear you, and don’t raise any suspicions,” the woman scolded.
At that moment, Professor Zhao Jian spoke up from the side, "Don't worry, he's in a deep sleep right now. He inhaled our sleeping incense and drank two bottles of my sedative coffee solution; he definitely won't wake up."
"Alright, let's move on. We're almost there. This time it's quite dangerous; I hope that kid brings us good luck," the woman said, and then they began to attend to other matters.
I sat in the tent, completely stunned. I wasn't foolish; I could clearly tell that when they referred to "that kid," they meant me!
Zhao Jian brought me here not to join some expedition team; clearly, they intended to use me as a key! They were going to explore an ancient tomb!
Cold sweat trickled down my forehead as I sat in the tent, my mind racing. It didn't take long for me to piece together the reason behind this.
These people probably had no idea what was going on but had learned about my grandfather's story. When my grandfather entered the tomb years ago, he was the only one who returned from the entire Tomb Raiding team, and the reason he survived was because he was holding onto me.
They must have found out about this, which is why Zhao Jian invited me out for an adventure. He claimed it was to investigate the Cosmic Pendant, but that was just a cover; he simply wanted to bring me here!
Moreover, to ensure their plan went smoothly, he had dosed me with sleeping incense. That's why after I slept last night, I felt so groggy.
He also gave me some coffee solution that likely contained both stimulating caffeine and sedative components. So after drinking it, I initially felt energized but soon became drowsy again!
If it hadn't been for the fact that I secretly poured out that bottle of solution at noon and if I hadn't been startled awake by the sound of galloping hooves just now, I would have already been sold off!
I gasped for breath; honestly, I was very nervous, but I had to stay calm. Sitting in the tent, I kept thinking—I had to escape! While I also wanted to see the ancient tomb where my grandfather discovered me all those years ago, I should be entering it willingly, not being dragged into it!
At that moment, Zhao Jian and his companions stood up, and one of them walked toward me.
Seeing this, I immediately lay down and closed my eyes.
Before long, it seemed someone lifted the tent flap, followed by Zhao Jian's voice calling out, "Song Fei? Song Fei?"
I pretended to be sound asleep, lying completely still.
Then the voice faded away.
Cold sweat dripped from my forehead. Humans are different from ghosts; no matter how fierce a ghost may be, its intelligence won't be very high. However, if the enemy is a person, I must be extremely cautious!
I swallowed twice, lying there for a full two minutes before I quietly opened my eyes.
The campfire outside was still burning. Zhao Jian and that woman had returned to their tent, but the young man with the buzz cut remained by the campfire, likely keeping watch.
I forced myself to stay calm and continued lying there. I needed to escape, and I had to wait for the right moment!
After five minutes of waiting, I took out my phone. The signal was weak; I couldn't access the internet or use navigation. Even the call signal was faint, with only one bar remaining.
It was nine o'clock at night.
I swallowed again.
At that moment, laughter came from outside.
Peeking out, I saw the buzz-cut young man engrossed in watching a movie on an iPad.
I took a few deep breaths. This seemed like my best opportunity. If I waited too long and night fell deeper, these people might become more alert, and I'd have even less chance to escape.
I carefully removed useless items from my backpack and set down my water bottle. Then I tightened my climbing pack and slowly crawled out of my tent.
I moved cautiously and slowly, afraid of making any noise. I knew that although I had a Swiss Army knife hidden in my bag, I was definitely no match for Zhao Jian and his companions. Any one of them could easily pin me down with one hand.
"Damn it, this is so frustrating!"
I crawled out little by little, like an Old Turtle.
After crawling for more than ten meters, I crouched down slightly and moved towards a slope. Once I reached behind a tree, I swallowed hard, bent over, and took off running like a rabbit!
I disregarded everything and sprinted in a determined direction.
No matter how terrifying wild wolves or venomous snakes might be, nothing is as frightening as the human heart.
After running for more than twenty minutes, I was panting heavily, nearly out of breath. However, I didn't dare to rest; I continued to run up a slope and, to my surprise, found a Main Road!
Though the road was dirt and not paved with asphalt or anything, standing on this Main Road made me feel much safer. I knew that as long as I kept running along this road, I would surely encounter other people!
I gasped for air, barely able to think.
I ran for what felt like an eternity when suddenly, a bright light appeared ahead—it was a Headlight!
I looked up and was thrilled; there was actually a car! This is great!
I quickly stood in the middle of the road and waved my arms to signal the vehicle to stop.
As the car approached, I realized it was a Minibus—a very shabby Minibus. It was the kind of vehicle that operates between rural areas and county towns, essentially a semi-illegal ride.
But who cares? As long as I could get on that bus, I would definitely escape.
I stood in the middle of the road waving my hands.
The car was speeding, and as soon as the driver saw me, he slammed on the brakes. However, the vehicle was in such poor condition that it took over thirty meters to come to a stop, nearly hitting me.
I quickly walked toward the car door.
The interior was shabby, filled with the smell of gasoline. The driver, wearing a cap, cursed in a dialect I barely understood, "Are you trying to get yourself killed? Almost ran you over!"
I just smiled and ignored him, finding a seat by the window.
The driver started the engine and continued down Main Road.
I took deep breaths, feeling relieved. Suddenly, I felt a chill. Looking around, I noticed a woman sitting behind me, her presence exuding an eerie energy.
