Hearing the sound of the door opening, I felt a bit puzzled.
At that moment, a series of knocks echoed from the duty room door—"knock, knock, knock." It was midnight in the Surgical Building, and this sudden knocking was indeed quite eerie.
I stepped outside and flung the door open, only to find no one there. A row of candles was burning in front of me.
Staring at the candles, I was taken aback. Who would light candles at midnight?
I swallowed hard, feeling a wave of panic wash over me.
"Did you miss me?" A figure suddenly darted out from the side and lunged at me.
Startled, I thought, who would miss you? I kicked out instinctively.
With a loud "thud," the person I kicked rolled on the ground for a few moments.
Qin Yuan heard the commotion and hurried over. Upon seeing the candles outside, she paused for a moment. Then her eyes widened in surprise as she recognized the person on the ground. She rushed over to help him up. "Zhao Ke, what are you doing here?"
Only then did I realize that the man I had kicked down was quite handsome and appeared to be a student based on his attire.
Zhao Ke got back on his feet and exclaimed, "What’s going on? Qin Yuan, aren’t you supposed to be alone in the duty room? I figured you might be scared, so I prepared a candlelit midnight snack to surprise you."
Qin Yuan pulled Zhao Ke up and pouted in annoyance. "No surprise here, just a fright! This is a hospital! Why are you lighting candles in the middle of the night? Are you trying to summon ghosts?"
As soon as she finished speaking, the temperature around us suddenly dropped a little, as if a cold breeze had swept through.
Qin Yuan shrank her head in fear and hurriedly gathered the candles from the floor into the duty room. She turned to us, saying, "Let me introduce you. This is Zhao Ke. Zhao Ke, this is Song Fei, a student from the medical school who is on duty today."
I felt quite frustrated. Damn it, I was supposed to have a wonderful time with Qin Yuan today, but this jerk ruined it. What a buzzkill.
Zhao Ke looked at me and smiled while touching his chin. "So you're the senior! Nice to meet you. I'm Qin Yuan's boyfriend, Zhao Ke, studying at the nearby Agricultural University."
I was taken aback for a moment, and then my face flushed. This guy was actually Qin Yuan's boyfriend? I had almost been caught just now!
I quickly reached out and shook Zhao Ke's hand. "You're quite thoughtful, knowing that Qin Yuan is scared and coming to keep her company. Well, since you're here, I can take my leave now. I need to go back to my office to write a medical record for the teacher."
Zhao Ke hurriedly said, "Wait, senior! Let's have a late-night snack together. Usually, I'm not around Qin Yuan, so you should take good care of her."
I awkwardly smiled and glanced at Qin Yuan, who was covering her mouth and laughing while giving me a flirtatious wink.
I was startled. Seriously? Winking at me in front of her boyfriend? How am I supposed to handle this? I firmly decided to leave; I didn't want to get involved in this mess.
Just as the three of us were talking, suddenly a terrified scream echoed from the end of the corridor: "There's a dead person!"
The voice startled all three of us. I pushed open the door and looked toward the sound. At the end of the corridor, there was a large pool of blood, and a nurse lay motionless in it.
"I'll go check it out; you two stay here," I said as I walked over while pulling out my phone to call the police.
I was the first to reach the scene. The nurse on the ground had an expression of sheer horror on her face. Her shirt was completely torn apart, and both of her breasts had been bitten off.
There were wet footprints on the floor leading away from where the nurse lay.
I felt a bit scared but still followed those wet footprints; they must belong to the murderer!
I walked with an unusual sense of urgency, my footsteps leading me down the corridor. After about ten meters, the footprints completely vanished. I looked up and saw a window ahead, which meant the murderer had jumped out directly from there.
This was the third floor!
I approached the window and glanced down. There was no one below; that damp footprint had abruptly ended.
At that moment, many people began to rush into the corridor—nurses and security personnel. The guards were maintaining order, protecting the scene and preventing anyone from getting too close. I was pushed aside by one of the guards.
Not wanting to see the gruesome sight of the corpse any longer, I turned back. When I reached Qin Yuan's duty room, she pulled me inside.
I asked, "Hey, where's your boyfriend?"
"He left," Qin Yuan said, looking at me with a slightly embarrassed smile. "I'm sorry; I didn't expect Zhao Ke to show up suddenly."
I quickly replied, "It's nothing; I should be the one feeling awkward."
Qin Yuan squinted her eyes and smiled before continuing, "Actually... well, I've been with Zhao Ke for three years. We got together when I was fifteen, but he's quite the flirt and has cheated on me a few times. So... I felt unbalanced and ended up flirting with you. Hehe, you know, if you're interested, I could still agree to it—consider it revenge on Zhao Ke. That way, I'd feel more at ease."
I couldn't help but laugh at this quirky couple. Although Qin Yuan had a great figure, having just seen a corpse left me with no desire to get intimate with her. Still, I thought her idea of revenge was amusing.
We chatted for a while until someone outside shouted, "Who called the police? Come out to make a statement."
I stepped outside and said, "That was me."
A police officer turned around upon hearing my voice and paused when he recognized me. "Oh, Song Fei! What are you doing here?"
I realized it was Qin Hai, that goofy guy. "I just came to visit a friend."
When I reached the body, Qin Hai looked around and asked, "Are you the first one to discover this body?"
"I'm not the first. I heard someone shouting and came out. The person who first found the body seems to be a patient, and they have taken him for emergency treatment. When I arrived, there was no one else around. There are a circle of footprints on the ground, see?" I pointed at the ground.
"Footprints?" Qin Hai paused, looking at the ground. "What footprints?"
"They must be the killer's footprints. Look, they lead all the way to the window. The killer definitely jumped out of the window to escape." Such a simple deduction even a three-year-old would understand. Qin Hai loves solving mysteries; he couldn't possibly overlook this.
Qin Hai patted my shoulder and said, "Song Fei, are your eyes okay?"
"Huh?" I looked at Qin Hai in confusion.
Qin Hai pointed at the ground. "Where are the footprints? It's completely clean."
I was stunned for a moment and looked down again. The dripping wet footprints were still there; although they had dried a bit since before, they were still clearly visible. How could Qin Hai not see such obvious footprints? As a detective, he definitely wasn't joking with me.
My head buzzed; I realized that this killer might not be human!
"Hai Ge, come over here. I need to talk to you for a moment."
Qin Hai nodded.
Once we were aside, I said, "Hai Ge, as you know, I can see some unusual things. I can indeed see some wet footprints on the ground."
Qin Hai looked at me, and his expression changed. "So... does that mean the killer isn't human?"
I had no words.
Qin Hai rubbed his chin with his right hand and muttered, "Nothing can escape my keen eye, Hai Ge. It seems this case is definitely not the work of a human. Well, it’s time for you, as a Part-time Auxiliary Police, to step in. Come on, let’s head to the monitoring room and check the surveillance footage."
I walked with Qin Hai toward the monitoring room. To save costs, the hospital had only assigned one security guard to the room, and when we entered, he was actually dozing off.
Qin Hai woke him up and asked, "Do you have the surveillance footage from the third-floor corridor?"
Seeing that it was a detective, the guard quickly rubbed his eyes and replied, "Yes, yes."
The guard swiftly pulled up the surveillance footage.
I thought for a moment about the time. "Set it to around ten past twelve."
The guard dragged the mouse and found twelve ten. Qin Hai said, "Stop here."
Around twelve eleven, a figure dressed in a Nurse Uniform emerged from the restroom. Although we were at a distance, both Qin Hai and I could tell that this woman was the victim.
Just half a minute after she came out of the restroom, a shadow appeared behind her—a large and tall figure wearing tattered black clothing, with disheveled hair and swollen hands and feet. He was significantly taller than an average person.
However, as soon as I saw that shadow, my heart sank. For some reason, my first thought was that this person was Wei Qiang!
I rubbed my eyes vigorously to get a clearer view. But the surveillance footage was a bit far away, and for some reason, that figure kept flickering in the video, making it impossible to see clearly.
I turned to look at Qin Hai; he clearly saw something in the footage too. His eyes were wide open, fixed intently on the monitor.
Suppressing my fear and unease deep inside me, I continued to watch the footage. In the video, it seemed that the nurse had heard footsteps behind her because she turned around to take a look.
At that moment, the screen suddenly emitted a crackling sound; the image became extremely unclear. The expression on the nurse's face twisted grotesquely—she tried to scream but couldn't make a sound; she wanted to struggle but couldn't move. Her face contorted in terror and agony before she fell to the ground with a thud—it seemed she had died.
At that moment, the man in black lowered his head, tearing the woman's clothes apart with his hands. He opened his bloody mouth and bit off both of her breasts, then turned and walked step by step to the window before jumping down.
The process ended, and after a while, a patient fell in the distance; she was the first to discover the dead body, and then I appeared.
I stared at the screen, a chill creeping up inside me.
Qin Hai turned to me and asked, "What... did you see?"
I replied, "A man in a suit. He seemed... well, a bit tall."
Qin Hai nodded. "Then it seems we saw the same thing."
I hesitated for a moment but then turned to Qin Hai and whispered, "Hai Ge, don't you think... that person looks like someone?"
