Gravekeeper
It only took a second to remember, and I was ready to provide an exciting reading experience.
When a few people heard that a mother had turned into a ghost because of her love, several girls felt quite guilty, so they probably weren't that scared anymore.
I asked them to find some alcohol, and after they brought it back, I burned the embryo while reciting a passage from the Rebirth Mantra.
This Rebirth Mantra was quite peculiar. After I recited it three times, indeed, both the ashes of the embryo and the ghost of the Old Goat quickly dissipated.
Sun Mei and the others knelt there with their hands clasped together, sincerely praying for Old Goat's forgiveness.
I squatted beside the fire pit, feeling rather strange. It was my first time guiding such a soul to the afterlife, and it was a sheep at that. Yet, I found myself somewhat enjoying this feeling.
I shook my head, stood up, and looked at Sun Mei and the others. "Alright, you all go back now. Get a good night's sleep, and everything will be fine tomorrow."
Sun Mei and the others stood up, and I escorted them back to their dormitory before returning to my own room.
By the time I got back to my dormitory, it was already past one in the morning.
Chi Xiang and Yang Gou Dan were both asleep. Chi Xiang was snoring loudly while Yang Gou Dan lay on his bed mumbling in his sleep, shouting things like "Help me! Help me! The Sword Saint is coming!"
I felt a bit speechless. Was this brat really suited to be a monk? Perhaps his master was right; Yang Gou Dan should return to secular life and get married.
I climbed into my bed, and within two minutes, I was so tired that I fell asleep in a daze. I was truly exhausted...
"Wake up! Wake up!"
I heard someone calling me.
I groggily opened my eyes and froze for a moment. Standing next to me were several people in police uniforms.
"You must be Song Fei," a person said to me, his expression serious.
I sat up abruptly, looking at the four police officers. They all wore stern faces and carried guns; this was clearly not a casual inquiry but rather a formal arrest.
I was a bit bewildered, but I nodded, "Yes, that's me. What's going on?"
One of the officers waved his Police Badge. "We are from the East Sea City Public Security Bureau's Criminal Investigation Team. We need your cooperation in an investigation regarding a case. Please come with us. Also, bring some toiletries," he reminded me sternly.
My heart sank at his words; this was clearly not just a request for cooperation but an intention to detain me. They even wanted me to bring toiletries.
I quickly replied, "Can you tell me why? Is there some mistake? I just returned to school yesterday and haven't even left the campus."
"Stop the nonsense and get up. We need to leave now," the officer said impatiently.
Chi Xiang and Yang Gou Dan also got up. Chi Xiang pulled out a pack of cigarettes and said, "Hey, guys, have a smoke. My roommate is always a model student, law-abiding and civilized. Are you sure you've got the right person? We've been together since yesterday; we haven't done anything wrong."
"You've been together this whole time?" the officer frowned at Chi Xiang.
Chi Xiang seemed worried about me being wrongfully accused and nodded firmly, "We've been together the entire time."
Honestly, I felt quite touched that Chi Xiang would lie for me in front of the police.
At that moment, a younger officer spoke up, "Captain, these two might be the suspects in Wang Yun's murder. We should take them both to prevent them from escaping."
The captain remained silent.
I was stunned by what I heard. I jumped off the bed and exclaimed, "What? What do you mean? Wang Yun? Are you talking about Boss Wang Yun from the café outside the school?"
The young police officer said, "Yes, Wang Yun died early this morning. We found your clothes in her room, and the residue inside her body is also related to you. Since you and your classmates have been together, you'll all need to come with us to the police station."
My head was buzzing. I wasn't worried about my own safety at the moment; I was consumed by one question: how could Sister Yun be dead? When I left, I had locked all the doors and windows!
Chi Xiang exclaimed loudly, "What? The Coffee Goddess is dead? And there's Song Fei's residue? You must be mistaken; how could this be possible? Song Fei is still a virgin; you must have guessed wrong."
I patted Chi Xiang on the shoulder and said, "Let's go. He’s my roommate. Last night he and the monk were playing games in the dormitory; he wasn't with me. I... I did have something with Sister Wang last night, but I didn't kill her. I'll go back with you for the investigation."
At that moment, Chi Xiang completely missed the point. He shook my shoulder and said, "Song Fei, you slept with the Coffee Goddess! You took my Stocking Goddess from me; you beast!"
"Stop it!" I pushed Chi Xiang onto the bed. "Sister Yun is dead; don't mess around. I'm not in a good mood."
I gathered my things and got into the police car, heading to the interrogation room at the station.
To be honest, the interrogation room was quite intimidating. Although I had nothing to hide, sitting there facing three stern-faced veteran officers made me feel a bit anxious.
I recounted everything that happened last night in detail from beginning to end, without concealing anything about Sun Mei and the others.
The three officers were clearly very experienced. They seemed casual in their questioning, but they focused on details, often asking me about the same detail three times. If it were a fabricated lie, it would be easily exposed.
They questioned me for over an hour before stepping out.
Before long, a young officer walked in holding a pack of cigarettes. He offered me one and said, "Smoke if you want; don’t be nervous."
"I don’t smoke," I replied.
"I'm Qin Hai," he said, taking a drag from his cigarette as he casually sat down on the table in front of me. "You can call me Hai Ge. Listen up, Song Fei; nothing escapes my keen eye. I actually know why you killed Wang Yun."
I shot a glance at this guy, who had just played the bad cop and was now switching to the good cop routine.
I said, “Hai Ge, don’t waste your breath. I’m really not the murderer. Since the incident just happened, it’s more important for you to find clues quickly.”
Qin Hai jumped off the table excitedly. He looked into my eyes with a goofy expression and said, “How do you know the incident happened not long ago? Because you know the exact time of the crime, right? Every case has its flaws; nothing can escape my keen eye, Hai Ge!”
This goofball was getting even more excited. He blew a smoke ring in my face and continued, “You’ve always had a crush on Wang Yun, which is why you’ve been working at her café! Until last night, you couldn’t hold back anymore. You slipped something into the victim’s drink and forced yourself on her! But after the drug wore off, she woke up furious and threatened to call the police! So out of fear, you strangled her! After all, you’re just a college student trying to cover up your crime, so you staged it to look like Wang Yun hanged herself! Am I right?”
I stared at Qin Hai, opened my mouth but couldn’t find the words for a moment. Finally, I said, “Do you think you’re Conan?”
“I’m Hai Ge! Nothing can escape my keen eye!” Qin Hai sneered at me. “Song Fei, your thinking is too simplistic. You think that by creating a false suicide scene we would let you go? The net is wide but nothing slips through! Your clothes were found under the victim’s bed, and there are bodily fluids inside her. Once the test results come back, your excuses won’t matter!”
I shook my head, not wanting to argue with this goofy cop. But then again, I wondered if other officers thought the same way. That bodily fluid was indeed mine; if they really believed I was guilty…
“Creak…”
The door to the interrogation room swung open again, and an old detective walked in.
“Captain! Song Fei is starting to crack!” Qin Hai exclaimed excitedly. “Captain, under my gentle persuasion, Song Fei is preparing to confess. You see, nothing can escape my keen eye…”
“Enough!”
The old detective interrupted Qin Hai. He looked at me and said, “Song Fei, right? We’ve already confirmed that you were not at the scene during the time of the incident.”
I breathed a sigh of relief but felt little joy. I quickly asked, “Comrade Officer, can you tell me more about the case? I consider myself a relative of Sister Wang; please let me know what happened.”
The old detective waved his hand for Qin Hai to uncuff me and simply stated, “The exact time of death was last night between twelve and twelve-thirty. We cannot yet determine if it was suicide or homicide; however, it was definitely asphyxiation—she hanged herself. During that time frame, we have confirmed with Sun Mei and others that you were with them.”
Qin Hai muttered to himself, "It can't be! How could my reasoning be wrong?"
The old detective and I ignored Qin Hai.
The old detective asked me, "Song Fei, the last person the victim interacted with before death was you. Think carefully, did you notice anything unusual about the victim?"
I shook my wrist, recalling Wang Yun's state from yesterday, and nodded firmly. "Yes, at least the Sister Yun I saw yesterday was indeed a bit different. Sister Yun has always been quite a conservative woman, but yesterday she seemed a bit heated at first, and later in the evening, she even took the initiative to invite me for drinks. She also... well, anyway, Sister Yun was definitely acting strangely yesterday. But at that time, I thought it was just because she had too much to drink or maybe due to hormonal changes. Looking back now, it really was quite odd."
The old detective nodded. "Alright, you can head back to school now. Keep your phone on and don't stray too far from here."
"Okay."
As soon as I left the police station, I took the bus straight to Sister Yun's café.
