At nine o'clock the next morning, beneath the Laboratory Building, I was pacing back and forth with my bag in hand. Inside the bag were a USB Drive and a newly purchased Voice Recorder.
"Junior." Senior Zhang suddenly appeared out of nowhere. "I knew you would come."
I turned to leave, but he grabbed my arm. "Wait! Professor Zhou wants to extract evidence from you. If you go up now, it's like a lamb walking into a tiger's den!"
"Let go."
"You're still angry with me, aren't you?" He looked desperate, almost on the verge of tears. "I admit I'm a coward. But please let me help you this time."
I shook off his hand. "Just like how you helped Li Ling?"
"I..."
"Enough." I interrupted him. "You know what's more disgusting than your betrayal? It's this pathetic display of remorse you're putting on right now."
He stood there stunned, mumbling, "But I genuinely want to..."
"Shut up!" I walked away without looking back. "Think about what kind of person you really are."
In the elevator, I pulled out my phone. A message from Li Ling came through just then: "Have you arrived at the library?"
Ignoring her, I directly dialed Director Li at the Supervisory Office.
"Director Li, this is Lin Yuwei." I took a deep breath. "I want to report something."
At ten fifty, I stood in front of Professor Zhou's office door.
Knock, knock.
"Come in," his gentle voice came from inside.
I pushed the door open. There was more than just Professor Zhou in the office—Director Li from the Supervisory Office was also present, along with two middle-aged men I had never seen before.
"You're just in time," Professor Zhou smiled. "These two are colleagues from the Disciplinary Committee. We're having a small meeting regarding your report of academic misconduct."
I glanced around and suddenly laughed, "Well, that's perfect. I have some things to say as well."
I took out my phone and started recording: "You wouldn't want those past indiscretions from your undergraduate days to be made public, would you?"
"Tomorrow at ten, bring the USB drive to my office..."
The office fell into a dead silence. The smile on Professor Zhou's face froze.
I pulled out the USB drive from my bag. "You want evidence? It's all here. But..."
I snapped the drive in half.
"Now we can have a proper conversation."
"You've lost your mind!" Professor Zhou exclaimed as he stood up abruptly. "Those pieces of evidence..."
"Are right here." I pointed to my temple. "Haven't you always said I have a good memory?"
The tension in the office was palpable. Director Li and the two members of the Disciplinary Committee wore subtle expressions—they clearly hadn't anticipated this turn of events.
"Lin, what do you mean by this?" Director Li broke the silence. "If you're going to report, why destroy the evidence?"
I looked at her and suddenly laughed, "Director Li, why don't you explain how the report materials from last year regarding Li Ling disappeared into your hands?"
Her expression changed, "You..."
I took out my phone and opened the recording, "Let's hear it from Sister Li Ling herself."
I pressed play. Li Ling's voice came through clearly:
"It was her. Director Li helped Professor Zhou destroy my report materials. She was also responsible for contacting various universities to block my employment..."
"That's enough!" Professor Zhou interrupted the recording. "Do you think this proves anything?"
"Of course not." I scanned the room, "But it's enough for everyone present to understand that this is not just a simple case of academic misconduct."
I turned to the two members of the Disciplinary Committee, "If I'm not mistaken, you two are here for the Academician Pre-Review Meeting, right?"
They exchanged glances, and one of them spoke up, "According to the report, Professor Zhou is suspected of falsifying materials in the Academician application."
"Then you should definitely keep me around," I leaned back in my chair. "After all, I am Professor Zhou's prized student and know too much about the 'insider' information of the Laboratory."
Professor Zhou's face turned an ugly shade: "Are you threatening me?"
"You taught me well," I replied sarcastically. "Didn't you say that's how things work in this circle?"
