A heaviness settled in my heart. No wonder Director Li's attitude had been so strange that day.
"Are you trying to persuade me to give up?"
"No." Li Ling pulled a phone from her bag. "I'm here to help you. I have a recording of a conversation between Professor Zhou and Director Li from last year."
I took the phone and put on the headphones. It was Professor Zhou's voice:
"This girl is too naive, thinking a few Experiment Records can take me down? Tell her to either withdraw her report or she can forget about making it in this circle..."
The recording continued, but I couldn't listen any longer.
"This is how they forced me to drop out," Li Ling said as she took back the phone. "But this time it's different. You are better prepared than I was."
I pulled out the USB drive. "You mean this evidence?"
"More than that." She glanced around. "I heard there's a Preliminary Review Meeting before the Academician's defense next week. I can get the time and location."
My pupils constricted. "You mean..."
"Professor Zhou will definitely pull some tricks at the Preliminary Review Meeting." Her gaze was intense. "But if someone can catch him in the act..."
The café door opened again. Li Ling put on her mask. "This should be enough for you to consider. I have to go."
"Wait!" I grabbed her hand. "Why are you helping me?"
She paused for a moment. "Because I don't want to see anyone repeat my tragedy." Before turning away, she added, "By the way, don't trust Zhang Ming too much."
"What do you mean?"
But she had already vanished into the curtain of rain.
I pulled out my phone and found a message from Senior Zhang:
"Did you see her? What did you talk about?"
I hesitated to reply. Li Ling's last words echoed in my mind.
Suddenly, a thought struck me: how did Senior Zhang know I was meeting "her"?
I rushed out of the café; the rain was pouring heavily. Behind the glass window of the bookstore across the street, Senior Zhang was anxiously looking around. When he saw me, he immediately ran out.
"You finally came out! You scared me to death..."
"How did you know I was meeting a woman?" I locked eyes with him.
He froze. "I... I saw from across the street."
"In this heavy rain, you could see clearly?" I took a step back. "Or did you already know it was Li Ling?"
"I..."
"So what?" I laughed sarcastically. "Are you in cahoots with Professor Zhou and the others? You've been getting close to me just to keep an eye on me?"
"It's not what you think!" He grabbed my hand tightly. "Yes, I admit I knew Li Ling was coming. But I genuinely want to help you!"
I shook off his hand. "What kind of genuine help? Like how you stood by a year ago and watched Li Ling get expelled?"
"You’re right, I’m a coward," he shouted. "It was me who told Professor Zhou about Li Ling's report. But now I want to make amends..."
"Make amends?" I scoffed. "You secretly snitched behind my back, and that's your idea of making amends?"
The rain poured down harder. We stood there in the rain, like two ridiculous puppets.
"Give me a chance," his voice choked with emotion. "At next week's Preliminary Review Meeting, I can help you..."
"Enough," I interrupted him. "This battle has never needed someone like you."
As I turned to leave, he suddenly called out to me, "I've already told Professor Zhou about the USB Drive! He's sending someone to the café right now... You need to hide immediately!"
I turned back and looked at this senior who had known me for two years. He was soaked through, his eyes filled with desperation.
"Thanks for the heads-up," I said sarcastically. "At least you finally spoke the truth this time."
