As I was speaking, my phone rang. It was a voice message from Liu Ting: " Reporter Lin, I need to confess everything. I'm coming to find you right now."
"Wait!" I immediately called back, but the phone had already shut off.
"Liu Ting? The deceased's family member?" Chen Jianguo suddenly tensed up. "Did she contact you?"
His reaction was too intense, raising my suspicions. Just as I was about to ask more, the ICU door swung open, and Nurse Zhang was wheeled out in a wheelchair.
" Reporter Lin..." Her voice was weak. "You’re here..."
Chen Jianguo stood up. "I’ll take my leave." Before he left, he cast a meaningful glance at Nurse Zhang.
Once he was far away, Nurse Zhang signaled for the aide to leave. " Reporter Lin, did you receive the USB drive from Director Wang?"
"How do you know?"
"Because I stole it." Her voice trembled. "That day on the rooftop, I saw that Director Wang's office was unlocked..."
No wonder she committed suicide. She must have been discovered.
"But why would Director Wang give me the USB drive?"
"Because he is also a victim." Nurse Zhang's gaze suddenly sharpened. " Reporter Lin, did you notice the anomalies in the experimental data on the USB drive?"
I nodded. "The organ functions of the deceased..."
"It’s not just that." She pulled out a note from under the armrest of her wheelchair. "You need to check this account; it contains all the evidence. The hospital never conducted clinical trials; all that data is fabricated!"
My phone rang again. It was a multimedia message from Liu Ting. As I opened it, I gasped in shock.
The photo showed a room resembling a laboratory, with various medical instruments hanging on the walls. The most striking feature was a whiteboard, densely covered with data and names.
"This is... the Rainbow Clinic?"
"No, this is..." Nurse Zhang's voice suddenly trailed off. Her face turned pale. "Someone's coming."
At the end of the hospital corridor, hurried footsteps echoed.
"You need to go!" Nurse Zhang urged me anxiously, "Through the fire escape! Hurry!"
I grabbed my backpack and ran. As I pushed open the fire door, I heard Nurse Zhang scream behind me. By the time I dashed down the stairs, police cars surrounded the area outside.
"Make way!" Medical staff rushed by with a stretcher. I overheard someone say, "A patient fainted outside the ICU..."
A sense of foreboding washed over me. Once home, I immediately checked the account that Nurse Zhang had given me. It was an encrypted cloud drive containing an audio recording.
It was Wang Zhiping's voice: "Director Chen, this isn't right. If this gets discovered..."
"What are you afraid of?" Chen Jianguo interrupted him. "The data is all from your hospital; if something goes wrong, it's your responsibility."
"But those patients..."
"It's too late to turn back now. Remember, your son is still with our company."
The recording ended there. My hands trembled uncontrollably. A terrifying suspicion crept into my mind: they were conducting illegal human experiments!
Just as I was about to call the police, I received a multimedia message. It was another photo from Liu Ting, this time showing a clear experimental record. Boldly written across it were:
"Objective of the experiment: To verify the effects of drug D-356 on human organs..."
This is not a new cancer drug; it is clearly a live experiment! Just as I was about to take a screenshot to save the information, my phone suddenly went black, and all the data vanished.
When I reopened it, the screen displayed only one message: " Reporter Lin, help me, I am at..."
Sender: Liu Ting.
But the message abruptly cut off. When I tried to call her, the line was already disconnected.
I stood by the window, gazing at the bustling city outside. I couldn't help but wonder how much darkness lay hidden beneath this glamorous surface.
Nurse Zhang was unconscious, Liu Ting was missing, Director Wang had an ambiguous attitude, and Chen Jianguo seemed to have ulterior motives. In this game, who is the player and who is merely a pawn?
On the notepad on my desk, I quickly jotted down a few keywords:
- Human experimentation
- Organ function
- False data
- Threats and extortion
- Laboratory photos
These clues pieced together point to a truth far more terrifying than counterfeit drugs.
