Yama's Wedding
“Yao Guang, let’s return to Yao Guang Palace first,” Shu said, catching up with Yao Guang and Xue. In this situation, Shu was uncertain whether it was a blessing or a curse.
“Yao Guang, you should go ahead. Everyone in the court knows you will be my wife, so they won’t make things difficult for you,” Xue said to Yao Guang. The reluctant expression on Yao Guang's face made Xue feel a pang of sadness.
“Alright,” Yao Guang replied. At that moment, she had regained her celestial form, and her demeanor was no longer the same as before. Her long hair cascaded down her back, and her complexion was no longer the waxy yellow of the mortal realm; instead, her skin was like fine jade, and her lips resembled cherry blossoms. She exuded an ethereal beauty. However, despite wearing fitting clothes, Yao Guang appeared quite delicate as her feathered garments fluttered in the wind.
Xue thought to himself that he must ensure Yao Guang would be well-fed and healthy in the future.
After Yao Guang left with Shu, Xue stood alone at the South Gate of the courtyard. By now, all the celestial beings in the palace were aware that the person standing there was none other than the Wheel King, who had once single-handedly fought against a horde of demons. Naturally, they did not underestimate him; many passed by and greeted Xue, creating a lively atmosphere. However, an aura of “keep your distance” emanated from him, which made some celestial beings hesitant to approach, granting Xue a moment of peace.
Standing at the South Gate, Xue looked down at the swirling clouds beneath him while the enchanting melodies from within the palace drifted into his ears. The palace appeared splendid on the outside, but who could see the problems within? These immortals spent their days in indulgence and chaos, living in constant anxiety. Yet when he had met the Jade Emperor earlier, Xue felt that this Jade Emperor was not as indifferent to state affairs as rumors suggested; perhaps he was the one who understood this place best.
“Xue!” A soft voice interrupted his thoughts.
“Flower Fairy,” Xue turned to see his friend standing before him.
Hearing Xue address her by that name made Flower Fairy smile wryly. “When did we become so distant?”
Xue remained silent; there were matters he needed to handle quickly. He wasn’t one to procrastinate.
“Xue, I just came to remind you that this court is not what it seems. You need to be cautious,” Flower Fairy said. Seeing Xue’s silence only deepened her own bitterness; what more could she do? She had already told herself not to get too close to him again, yet seeing him standing alone made her unable to resist approaching for a brief conversation.
Upon hearing Flower Fairy’s words, Xue felt a slight relaxation in his heart. Faced with Blossom’s presence, he couldn’t harden his heart any further. In the past, Blossom had been very close to him; they often drank and painted together in carefree times. If it hadn’t been for later realizing Blossom’s feelings for him, he wouldn’t have gradually distanced himself from her. In truth, it was also his fault.
“Blossom, I want to thank you in advance,” Xue said, bowing slightly to Blossom.
Hearing Xue refer to her as Blossom again, Flower Fairy felt reassured that Xue still considered her a friend. She had always known that he did not harbor feelings for her. Watching him with Star Lord Yao Guang, Blossom hoped that Xue could be with the one he loved. As long as he saw her as a friend, that was enough for her.
“Xue, I’ll take my leave now. Remember, you must stay vigilant,” Blossom reminded Xue once more. She had a nagging feeling that something was about to happen in this realm. After spending so much time here, it was an instinct she couldn’t shake off. Although she didn’t know what would occur, she sensed something ominous looming ahead. The upcoming battle with the Dragon Clan was certainly not going to be as simple as she had imagined. Over the years, the one above was not as indifferent as people claimed; if that were true, this realm would have ceased to exist long ago. All power and authority were firmly in that person’s hands. It was only when Blossom felt utterly despondent that she realized this truth after leaving this place. In any case, she had no desires or expectations; she never cared about how this realm fared, nor did she concern herself with her own fate. Having lived for so long, even within the Flower Garden, Blossom could no longer sense any fragrance of herself.
Blossom’s reminder prompted Xue to ponder deeply. After some thought, he hurriedly conjured a cloud and shot towards the Underworld.
Yao Guang was brought back to his palace by the hub, and as soon as he entered, he was surrounded by several other Star Lords. The usually fiery Kaiyang looked at Yao Guang with concern, while the cold-hearted Lian Zhen observed from a distance, his eyes clearly reflecting worry for him. During his time in the lower realms, Yao Guang hadn’t thought much about home; indeed, this was his home! After being away for so long and drifting alone outside, perhaps it was because he hadn’t awakened before or because he had been too focused on Xue’s matters that he forgot about the family who supported him right beside him.
“Yao Guang, how are you?” It was Kaiyang, who usually enjoyed competing with Yao Guang. At this moment, seeing him return, he was the first to snap back to reality and inquire about his well-being.
“Yao Guang, are you hurt?” Wenqu appeared calm as usual, but his hurried speech betrayed him. Known for his eloquence, even these few words came out somewhat unclear.
Looking at his concerned Brothers, Yao Guang felt a warmth he had never experienced before at this moment. No, it wasn’t that he hadn’t noticed before; it was just that he had never paid attention to how his Brothers cared for him in their own ways. Just like years ago when he was banished to the mortal realm due to matters concerning Xue; if it weren’t for his Brothers pleading on his behalf, his punishment would have been far worse. Because of their request, they had all accepted the punishment of the Thunder Whip. This realization weighed heavily on his heart—he had caused his Brothers to worry for him all this time.
“I’m fine, really,” Yao Guang reassured all his Brothers, trying to put their minds at ease.
“Alright then, since Yao Guang is back now, let him rest properly,” Lian Zhen said to those gathered around Yao Guang.
“Yes, yes! He should get some good rest,” the other Star Lords echoed after being reminded by Lian Zhen, urging Yao Guang to hurry and rest.
Pushed into the Yao Guang Palace by his concerned Brothers, there was no way for him to resist their insistence. He lay down on the bed and began to rest; coincidentally, he also felt quite fatigued. Before long, he fell asleep.
“Is Yao Guang asleep?” The voice belonged to the usually boisterous Kaiyang, who, upon seeing Yao Guang peacefully sleeping, lowered his voice, a feat for someone known for his loudness. He was trying hard not to wake Yao Guang, and his voice was barely audible.
“She’s asleep, she’s asleep,” Xuan Star Lord said, glancing at Yao Guang. “Let’s hurry up and leave.”
Shu took a look at the slumbering Yao Guang and set up a spell outside her palace before feeling reassured enough to depart.
Once inside Shu's Greedy Wolf Palace, the group of Star Lords let out a collective sigh of relief. “I was about to burst,” Kaiyang stretched lazily. He had been particularly worried about waking Yao Guang and had to keep his voice down, which left his throat feeling a bit uncomfortable.
“Alright, stop complaining. While Yao Guang isn’t here, let’s get down to business,” Quan Bai shot a glance at Kaiyang. This Kaiyang was always so carefree, never thinking things through. If it hadn’t been for him covering Kaiyang’s mouth earlier, he would have surely woken Yao Guang.
“Yao Guang just returned to the court; there are many things I haven’t told her,” Shu said, looking at his younger brothers.
“Brother, what does Yao Guang actually know?” Kaiyang couldn’t help but ask. His loud question earned him a glare from Quan, but he didn’t seem embarrassed and merely scratched his head.
Shu pondered for a moment before replying, “Yao Guang knows nothing. She only knows that we will be going to war with the Dragon Clan; I haven’t told her anything else.”
“That’s good,” Wenqu, who had been silent until now, remarked. “If that’s the case, it’ll be easier for us.”
“Don’t let Yao Guang find out,” the other Star Lords echoed in agreement.
“Yes, while Yao Guang was in the lower realm, she and Wheel King developed mutual feelings. You should have heard that Wheel King has already asked Jade Emperor for her hand,” Shu shifted the topic to Xue.
“What’s the deal with that Wheel King?” Quan asked.
"I'm not very clear on the specifics, but I know that after Yao Guang escaped from the Underworld, Yama King sent Wheel King to pursue Yao Guang's soul. However, later on, when Yama King reported to Jade Emperor, it turned out that Yao Guang's soul could not bear the pressure of reincarnation. So, he dispatched Wheel King to help restore Yao Guang's soul, which spared Yao Guang from punishment for escaping the Underworld. As for Wheel King, I can only say that he treats Yao Guang very well, so we can rest assured in entrusting Yao Guang to him."
After hearing Zhu's words, several Star Lords exchanged glances. They had only heard of Wheel King's reputation back in the day and were not very familiar with him, nor did they know what Wheel King was truly like.
"It's a pity we can't meet this person whom Yao Guang loves. We don't know if Wheel King will treat our Yao Guang well while we're away." Kaiyang, who had always been smiling, became sad at this matter; his starry eyes, once as bright as the moon, dimmed suddenly.
"He will. Wheel King has assured me of that. Moreover, when she came to court with us this time, she asked Jade Emperor for Yao Guang's hand in marriage. Now all the immortals probably know that Yao Guang is his betrothed. Even if he wanted to regret it now, he wouldn't be able to. Besides, his status will be the best refuge for Yao Guang." Zhu comforted the downcast crowd before him. He understood that everyone was reluctant to leave Yao Guang alone and feared that those in court would bully her after they departed. However, he believed in Wheel King; having spent these past few days with him, he could sense that Wheel King was serious about Yao Guang. That was why he allowed their relationship and even tacitly accepted what Xue had said to Jade Emperor earlier.
"Brother, Yao Guang will be fine, right?" Kaiyang cautiously sought reassurance from Zhu. Seeing Kaiyang like this made Zhu feel a bit sour inside. Mars Star Lord had always been a warrior in court, known for his fiery personality and forwardness. Although usually Kaiyang would draw his weapon at the slightest disagreement due to feeling powerless to resolve issues, now he repeatedly questioned whether Yao Guang would be able to live happily after they left. He wondered if the person they entrusted could truly protect her well.
"Kaiyang, you can rest assured; Wheel King is not someone who breaks promises." Zhu affirmed. He couldn't guarantee everything else, but he knew that if Yao Guang could be with Xue until the end, she would definitely live happily. As for what he saw at Destiny Keeper's place, Zhu thought it best not to share it with Kaiyang and the others to avoid causing them distress. For himself, although he believed in Wheel King's vows, he still needed to make more plans for Yao Guang to prevent her from ending up isolated and helpless in the future.
"Why must it be us? Is this life really that important?" Kaiyang exclaimed fiercely. If it weren't for this so-called fate, he wouldn't have abandoned Yao Guang and wouldn't have to go through such trouble; he could have stayed by her side and taken good care of their little sister.
Kaiyang remembered when Pangu opened up the earth and separated it from the sky; the world awakened from darkness at that moment when they first saw each other amidst a few clouds and mist. The Big Dipper Seventh Star shared a common root and vein with him; their hearts were connected as they witnessed everything in this world together. Yet because of this so-called fate, they had no choice but to submit to Emperor's arrangements and lived years in humiliation under his command while hiding their brilliance. Even so, fate still did not spare them. Just days ago, Zhu had received word about fate—the Dragon God War—destroying the earth and breaking fate's cycle.
This Dragon God War was merely a battle of greed among themselves whose consequences were borne by the Big Dipper Seventh Star. No matter how unwilling they were to accept it, they had no choice but to comply with fate’s decree. Thus they devised a plan: no matter what happened, one of them must remain as Big Dipper's last hope—and that person was Yao Guang.
They hoped that when Yao Guang eventually learned everything, she wouldn't be too heartbroken about it. (To be continued.)
