Yama's Wedding
Xue suddenly understood Yao Guang's words. Looking at Liu Qing's experiences might have been a stimulus for Yao Guang.
Xue had lived for a long time, long enough that he could no longer remember how many tides and waves he had witnessed. The last time he saw the East Sea, it was still a field of crops. To Xue, love in the mortal world seemed to be a fleeting affair; nothing lasted forever, just like the stone from the West Sea that had long since vanished with the passage of time. Moreover, feelings were such an ethereal thing. A bowl of Meng Po Soup was enough to erase even the deepest love that once promised eternal devotion. Yet Yao Guang seemed different; her concern for Liu Qing proved her yearning for human love.
However, reality was never as beautiful as one hoped. Not all love stories were beautiful; many were simply tales of unrequited affection.
“Yao Guang, I want to know about you,” Xue suddenly lost his courage to continue. How should he begin? What would be the right way?
“Hmm? What is it?” Yao Guang looked at Xue with confusion, rarely seeing him so hesitant.
“Yao Guang, can you tell me how you spent your time in the mortal world?” After asking, Xue didn’t dare to look at Yao Guang. How would she respond? Life in the mortal realm must be painful memories for her. Even if he knew, what difference would it make? Yao Guang had already endured her suffering, and recalling such experiences, as Phoenix Empress had said, could only bring her more pain. The thought that this pain was something he had caused made Xue regret his question.
Yao Guang paused upon hearing Xue's inquiry. Was he genuinely concerned about her life in the mortal realm? Throughout their journey together, aside from necessary conversations, Xue had never actively asked about her past life. Did this mean that Xue was now willing to understand her experiences?
“Mortal life is different from the court; it’s a place filled with emotions and love. I think although human lives are short, they are truly wonderful. I really enjoy living among humans and being one of them.”
Yao Guang's cheerful demeanor left Xue momentarily stunned. Was this child’s smile genuine or merely a facade to comfort herself?
“Yao Guang, do you really like life among mortals?” Xue asked cautiously.
“Of course! Xue, what’s wrong? How could I not like it? I can’t express how happy I am to be away from the court.” Yao Guang's carefree attitude puzzled Xue even more.
Xue thought for a moment, and suddenly a question popped into his mind. "Yao Guang, do you remember anything from your past life?"
Although Yao Guang found Xue's question strange, she realized that since he was interested in learning about her, she couldn't let this opportunity slip away.
"I do remember," Yao Guang replied confidently. "To be honest, it's a bit embarrassing. In my past life, I was a woman in a brothel."
Upon hearing this, Xue looked at the somewhat shy Yao Guang before him, and he could almost hear the furious shout of the Phoenix Empress echoing in his ears: "Do you know that in her previous life, she was a courtesan who was shared by thousands?" He felt a sudden pain in his head.
"But Xue, don't overthink it. Even though I was a woman in a brothel, I was very happy there," Yao Guang continued.
"What?" Xue grabbed Yao Guang's shoulders. Happy? Had he misheard? With such experiences, how could anyone be happy? Yao Guang, Yao Guang.
Yao Guang was startled by Xue's reaction. "Uh, Xue, what's wrong? I really was happy. Although I was in a brothel, the older sisters there took good care of me and didn't make me do any heavy work. I just had to clean the rooms..."
"Cleaning rooms!!!" Xue asked incredulously.
"Xue, what’s wrong with you? Yes, cleaning rooms is fine, right? Are you looking down on me for being in a brothel? But I didn’t do anything wrong!" Yao Guang genuinely didn’t understand what was bothering Xue.
At this point, Xue had calmed down. Yao Guang's words echoed in his mind. Looking at her expression, she seemed to be telling the truth, but it shouldn't be like this. Where had things gone wrong?
"What about your previous lives?" After calming down, Xue's question allowed Yao Guang to relax as well; she had been a bit frightened by his earlier demeanor.
"In my previous lives, although the families I reincarnated into were not very good, I still lived quite happily. I remember one life where I was a beggar. However, everyone in that beggar group treated me especially well because I was the only girl among them. They shared all their food and fun with me, and they were very united. There were my grandpa and grandma, my third uncle and fourth brother..."
"Alright, let's move on," Xue interrupted Yao Guang's recollections of her various relatives from past lives.
"Oh, oh, oh, there were just so many people, and they all treated me well. In every life, even though I didn't have any riches or jewels, the people around me were very kind. They taught me a lot about what it means to have integrity and honor, and what loyalty and filial piety are. So I really think life in the mortal realm is wonderful."
Xue now fully understood that the notion of a tragic fate over ten lifetimes was clearly a trick played by the Phoenix Empress. That Phoenix Empress seemed to thrive on chaos.
He found it strange; if what the Phoenix Empress said was true, how could Yao Guang still maintain such innocence in the mortal world? It seemed he had been too careless, thinking that Yao Guang was merely putting on an act in front of him. Little did he know, this was actually just a joke from the Phoenix Empress.
"Then why did you escape in this life?" Xue suddenly thought of another question.
Yao Guang blushed suddenly and lowered her head. "Actually, this is already my tenth life. If I were to reincarnate in this life, there are only two possibilities: one is that I awaken and return to the court, and the other is that I remain unrepentant and vanish into nothingness. But," her voice suddenly grew firm, "no matter which way it goes, it means I might see you again in the future. I don't want to be at their mercy like that. After living so many times, I've come to understand that what I hold in my own hands is the most reliable; everything else is false. So, I escaped." The determination in Yao Guang's tone extinguished some of Xue's earlier anger.
He had grown accustomed to loneliness for so many years. Who would have thought that there was such a foolish girl in the distant court who silently cared for him? She was willing to disregard everything just to see him. If Yao Guang hadn't encountered the Phoenix Empress back then, she would have likely vanished by now. The thought that he might never see this face again filled Xue with an unwillingness he had never felt before. It seemed he owed the Phoenix Empress a favor after all. This girl truly had some luck.
Xue sighed and suddenly reached out to pull Yao Guang into his embrace.
At that moment, Yao Guang was completely stunned. She had no idea what was happening; just moments ago, Xue had looked so angry, yet suddenly he was holding her close. He was holding her! This embrace felt like something she had been waiting for forever; it felt both familiar and unfamiliar.
In the courtyard, the two figures remained locked in their embrace for a long time.
