"Got you!"
After a violent impact, I found myself falling into a sturdy embrace. The familiar scent of cologne filled the air.
It was the real Chen Mo.
"Run!" He pulled me across the street. Behind us, I heard the sound of glass shattering, and those copies of me jumped down as well!
"This way!" Chen Mo dragged me into a black sedan. The engine roared to life, and the car shot forward in an instant.
"What happened..."
"Zhang Zhen contacted me when he noticed something unusual with your email." He focused intently on driving. "I found out someone posted information about Project Mirror on the Dark Web, so I guessed you might be in trouble."
"That imposter..."
"Is a Nano Bionic Robot, made with highly realistic materials that look exactly like a real person." He quickly turned at an intersection. "But they have a fatal flaw— their pupils reflect light like metal under bright conditions."
So he told me not to turn on the lights! It wasn't to avoid surveillance; it was to help me notice the anomaly!
"They mentioned something about completing an experiment..." I struggled to calm myself.
"Project Mirror was originally a military secret project." He glanced at the rearview mirror. "On the surface, it was about researching Biometric Technology, but in reality, it was developing 'Shadow Warrior'—a special robot capable of perfectly replicating anyone."
I inhaled sharply, "So you were...?"
"I served in the Special Forces for five years before being assigned to oversee the security of this project," he said, staring straight ahead. "But three months ago, there was a serious leak. An organization called 'Shadow Legion' stole the core technology."
"Those people right now?"
"Yes. They believe this technology can disrupt the existing social order. Imagine if someone could replicate anyone's identity at will—what would the world look like?"
A shiver ran down my spine. Bank accounts, social networks, even state secrets would no longer be safe.
"Why did they choose me?"
"Because of your work on the Identity Authentication Project." He suddenly turned to face me. "If your system goes live successfully, Shadow Legion's technology will be limited. They want to use you to sabotage this project."
"So they implanted a backdoor in the Source Code..."
"Not just a backdoor." His voice grew serious. "They want complete control over the system, turning it into their accomplice. At that point, no one will be able to tell who is real and who is fake."
Suddenly, headlights flashed in the rearview mirror. Three black sedans were rapidly closing in.
"They're catching up!"
Chen Mo slammed on the gas, and the car shot forward. "Hold on tight!"
The car sped through the night, the pursuers closing in behind me. I caught a glimpse of one of the vehicles, and to my shock, there was another "me" in the driver's seat!
Suddenly, my phone buzzed with a notification. It was a text message from an unknown number:
"Final ultimatum: hand over the Project Source Code, or watch your parents meet with an 'accident.'"
Attached was a photo: my parents sitting at home watching TV, timestamped just ten minutes ago.
"Chen Mo!" My voice trembled. "They even found my home..."
Before I could finish my sentence, a truck suddenly barreled out from the side!
"Watch out!"
Chen Mo swerved the wheel sharply, the tires screeching in protest. But it was too late.
In the massive crash, I felt the entire world spin around me.
