At half past five in the morning, the sky in Beijing was just beginning to lighten. In the entire office building, only a few of us were still working late. The cleaning lady pushed her mop by, casting a look that seemed to say, "These IT people are really pitiful."
"What did Li Wei say?" Zhang Lei asked while packing up his things.
"Don't tell him too much just yet," I yawned. "This matter isn't as simple as it seems; knowing too much might actually put him in danger."
I picked up my phone and sent a message to Li Wei: "There are some leads, give me a few days. By the way, don't touch Origin Awakening World for now."
The subway had already started operating, but I could hardly keep my eyes open. I opened a ride-hailing app, and the driver arrived quickly. Just before getting in, a news alert popped up on my phone with an eye-catching headline:
"Major Update for Origin Awakening World in Three Days: Several Revolutionary Features Set to Launch!"
The driver was playing "Beijing Beijing," humming along to Cui Jian. I leaned back in the rear seat, but my mind was racing: the timing of this announcement was quite clever. Since you all want to confront us in Paradise Space, let's make it a decisive showdown.
"Driver," I suddenly asked, "have you heard of virtual currency?"
"Oh, that stuff," he chuckled. "My nephew got into it two years ago and lost his wife's dowry. Now he’s hiding from his mother-in-law and doesn’t even dare go home for the Spring Festival."
I smiled but said nothing. In this world, while some people lost everything in the cryptocurrency market, others were manipulating the scythes that harvested them. This time, however, those scythes might swing toward the entire financial market.
The appointed time arrived at 7:45 PM at an office building on Beijing's West Second Ring Road.
"Xiao Gao, I've got all your gear ready," Zhang Lei handed me a USB drive. "It's the company's Shadow Walker system—limited edition, not available on the market. Don't waste the tech department's budget."
I smiled as I took the USB Drive, feeling a warmth in my heart. Over the past couple of days, Zhang Lei and Xiao Lin had done a lot of preparatory work for me, even staying up late to debug the system. In this profit-driven circle, it was rare to encounter such colleagues.
"Old Zhang, I'll treat you to dinner once this is over," I said, patting his shoulder. "The roast duck place you mentioned last time."
"Forget it," he waved his hand dismissively. "You should take care of yourself first. By the way, isn't your ex-girlfriend Xiao Wen at the Cyber Police Department now? Should we...?"
"No need," I interrupted him. "Let's not involve too many people in this."
At 7:58 PM, I put on the VR Headset and logged into Origin Awakening World. The system automatically generated a brand-new identity for me: a sharply dressed investment director, complete with a limited-edition tie clip. In this virtual world, people always lived within meticulously crafted illusions.
"Welcome to Paradise Space..." the system's greeting echoed, tinged with a hint of mechanical indifference. The club's hall was resplendent with gold and glitter, filled with hundreds of virtual characters mingling over drinks. They all sported halo effects, flaunting their identities and wealth.
From the background information Zhang Lei provided, I knew that most of these people were successful individuals in the real world. Here, they spent money like water, chasing the investment myths of Bitcoin and NFTs. But who could really tell whether the wealth behind those tailored suits was genuine or just a virtual bubble?
My phone buzzed in my pocket; it was a message from Zhang Lei: "Stay safe and contact me if anything happens. By the way, your mom called earlier and said she plans to come to Beijing this weekend..."
I chuckled wryly as I turned off my phone. Once this was over, it would be time to spend some quality time with my mom.
