CEO Zhang closed the door, and the atmosphere in the room instantly became tense. Lawyer Li gently touched my hand under the table, signaling me not to panic.
" Siyuan," CEO Zhang said with a forced smile, his tone surprisingly calm, "you're quite clever. You should know what to do in this situation. Our company doesn't want to escalate matters; it wouldn't be good for anyone. If you cooperate and admit to this, I promise to find a way out for you."
I took a deep breath. This was their plan: find a scapegoat to quell the situation, and then everything would return to normal. The only problem was that this scapegoat was me.
"CEO Zhang, I understand the company's position, but I truly haven't engaged in any insider trading. There must be some misunderstanding."
"Misunderstanding?" CEO Zhang's expression suddenly turned cold. "We have solid evidence. Your account bought a large number of put options just before Future Tech's stock plummeted. That's irrefutable proof."
I was about to argue back when Lawyer Li interjected, "CEO Zhang, my client denies these allegations. If you have evidence, please follow the formal investigation procedures. Until then, this informal interrogation must cease."
CEO Zhang shot a cold glance at Lawyer Li before turning back to me. " Siyuan, you're still young and have a bright future ahead of you. Don't ruin it over momentary stubbornness."
That wasn't advice; it was a blatant threat. A chill ran down my spine.
"I need time to think," I said, "and I need to see the evidence you're talking about."
"Fine," CEO Zhang stood up to leave. "I'll give you 24 hours. By this time tomorrow, I want your answer."
Once CEO Zhang left, I immediately turned to Lawyer Li. "Those trading records must be fake! Someone is framing me."
Lawyer Li pondered for a moment. "I believe you. But right now, the key is to find evidence. The information on that USB drive you mentioned might be our breakthrough."
Just then, my phone vibrated. It was a message from Director Li:
" Siyuan, I’ve been released. Things are much more complicated than they seem. Let’s meet at the usual place tomorrow at 8 AM. Be very careful."
My heart raced. Director Li was released? Could this change anything?
After showing the message to Lawyer Li, he frowned and said, "This could be an opportunity, but it might also be a trap. You can go meet him, but be extra cautious. I’ll wait nearby, just in case."
By the time I left the office, it was already late at night. I felt like I was walking through a maze, where every step could trigger a trap. But I had no choice; my escape routes had been cut off.
Once home, I immediately checked the USB drive. The contents only reinforced my belief that this was an intricately woven conspiracy. Future Technology was just the tip of the iceberg; many financial giants were involved behind the scenes.
Now I understood why they had gone to such lengths to frame me. The financial loopholes I had inadvertently discovered could bring the entire scheme crashing down. They needed to find a scapegoat before everything unraveled and divert everyone’s attention.
The next morning at 7:30, I arrived at the café where I had arranged to meet Director Li. This was a popular spot for company employees, and I chose a seat by the window so I could clearly see what was happening outside.
At 7:55, Director Li walked in. He looked much more haggard than before, with noticeable dark circles under his eyes. His suit wasn’t as crisp as usual.
" Siyuan," he said as soon as he sat down, "listen, we don’t have much time. You are in an extremely dangerous situation."
"What exactly is going on, Director Li?"
He glanced around and lowered his voice. "The matter with Future Technology is just the surface. Behind it lies a massive money laundering network. Several major banks and investment firms are involved. They’re using technological innovation as a cover while actually cleaning vast amounts of dirty money."
"Then why was I dragged into this?"
"Because you're too smart," Director Li said with a bitter smile. "The abnormal data you've uncovered could ruin their entire plan. So they decided to strike first and make you the scapegoat for insider trading."
My mind raced. "What about you? Why were you arrested and then released?"
Director Li's expression grew unusually complex. "I... I am also part of this plan. But I didn't expect things to escalate to this point. Siyuan, I'm sorry for involving you in this. I want to help you, but time is running out."
