The scene of the Milan Defense Zone being breached by Zombies occasionally resurfaced in Lin Yi's dreams. That time, the entire Defense Zone had turned into a sea of Zombies. In the end, Lin Yi and his companions were forced to retreat to a solitary peak, and it was only thanks to Charlie's father, Aibolon, who "happened" to help them, that they ultimately escaped with their lives.
Now, less than a year later, two powerful Mercenary Squads were meeting again, creating an undeniable sense of fateful recurrence.
"Get Beatrice's communicator!" Lin Yi composed himself and said immediately.
"Got it!" Jiao Jiao replied briskly, and soon after, the sound of the touchscreen on the other end echoed.
Lin Yi didn't have to wait long before he heard a busy signal followed by a familiar voice: "Lin Steward! It's been almost a year since we last met at the Kremlin Defense Zone!"
"Yeah, time flies. I've been busy hunting Zombies everywhere this past year and haven't had the chance to meet Beatrice," Lin Yi felt a twinge of resentment towards Beatrice. Back at the Kremlin Defense Zone, they had parted ways without a word while he faced life-threatening dangers, nearly becoming food for the Zombie Army.
"Hahaha! Lin Steward is now a world-renowned hero. Someone like me certainly doesn't deserve a personal audience with you. I never expected to run into our hero here; it makes this trip worthwhile!" Beatrice's words were laced with evident jealousy. In just one year, Lin Yi had gained honor and recognition as a world hero.
Beatrice was not one to easily concede, especially not to Lin Yi, her former comrade in battle. She didn't believe she was any less capable than him and naturally felt indignant about his current status!
Honor is an exalted existence for any man, often worth risking one's life to uphold!
"This is all thanks to everyone’s support. I'm just one of many teams resisting the Zombies; it's really nothing special," Lin Yi said before pausing briefly. He then shifted his tone, "Just like now. I'm in a bit of trouble and hope Beatrice can lend a hand."
There was a brief silence on the other end before laughter erupted: "Hahaha! Lin Steward is too modest. We are both members of the Mercenary Alliance. How could we not help you?"
As they spoke, both teams were rapidly closing in on each other.
At that moment, the Zombies also noticed the arrival of new human forces. However, it was too late to dispatch more Zombies. Half of those surrounding Lin Yi split off and charged toward the Golden Mercenary Corps.
Soon enough, Lin Yi understood why this fully armored Mercenary Squad dared to charge alone; they must have some strong backing!
The armored vehicles had all been modified. Each side featured a row of firing ports, and at the axle positions were protruding blade-like edges that spun rapidly with the wheels' rotation. The approaching Zombies were shredded into mere pulp by these Sharp Blades.
As long as they could withstand the attacks from the front, the zombies on both sides would hardly impede their progress. Just as everyone was in shock, the vanguard of the Golden Mercenary Corps had already arrived.
"Beatrice, we need to rely on you again for this city operation!" Lin Yi said, his eyes glinting with envy as he looked at her modified armored vehicle. His own was just a standard military vehicle from the Nile Defense Zone, unaltered and plain.
Not far away, Beatrice stood atop an armored vehicle, wielding a rotating machine gun and firing wildly at the dense cluster of zombies.
Upon hearing Lin Yi's call, Beatrice responded, "Just watch me this time!" She knew full well that this area was under constant surveillance by the Global Security Conference's satellites. The better she performed, the more likely she would be to earn the title of Mercenary King.
With a swift turn, Beatrice waved her hand towards the rear and then leaned down to whisper into her communicator. Soon, the entire armored force began to shift formation, ultimately arranging themselves into a spear-like formation. Lin Yi noticed that the first three armored vehicles were sturdier and seemed to have significantly more power.
At that moment, Beatrice waved her hand, and the entire Armored Vehicle Unit suddenly accelerated, charging ahead in just a few blinks of an eye to reach Lin Yi and his group.
Having already slain numerous zombies, Lin Yi's team was feeling somewhat fatigued. They didn’t argue with the Golden Mercenary Corps but simply followed behind the armored convoy, occasionally taking out any stray zombies.
In just a few minutes, both units had truly plunged into the midst of millions of zombies. At this point, high-level combat power zombies began to appear in greater numbers, making it impossible for them to clear a path using only their modified armored vehicles!
"Lin Steward, we hope you can contribute even more here!" Beatrice had joined Lin Yi now, and at that moment he had donned his War God Suit.
Although the War God Suit was difficult for ordinary people to acquire—even for those with money—it was not a challenge for the world's largest mercenary group. While they didn't purchase many, each division still managed to obtain some.
"You're too kind, Beatrice!" Lin Yi could clearly feel that Beatrice's strength had significantly increased at this moment; especially with the enhancement of the War God Suit, she had reached at least Eight-Star Peak strength.
"Then let's stand at the front to block the fiercest attacks while everyone else defends against flanking maneuvers from both sides and handles any rear threats!" Beatrice wasted no time being polite with Lin Yi and immediately began strategizing.
Now was not the time for debates about who should lead; besides, Beatrice's distribution made sense. Lin Yi nodded in agreement and instructed Sean and Roman to guard one side each while Li Qiweng and Ibn would cover the rear!
The War God Squad was also divided into four sections, with two hundred members assigned to each side for defense! This way, ordinary zombies couldn't get close, while high-level zombies were firmly kept outside of the armored forces.
Despite the slow pace of their advance, the group did not pause even for a moment due to the Zombie Attack.
Lin Yi kept a close watch on the Nine-Star Combat Power Zombies, aware that they posed the greatest threat to the entire team at this moment.
To Lin Yi's surprise, although the journey was extremely arduous over the twenty miles, after some time, just as everyone was exhausted and their weapons and ammunition were nearly depleted, they finally reached the Quarantine Wall, towering over them like a multi-story building.
Perhaps sensing Lin Yi and his team's intentions, the Zombie Army suddenly increased their attack speed, forcing Lin Yi and his companions into a corner of the city wall with no chance to turn around!
“Jiao Jiao, contact the City Defense Force immediately! Tell them to help us fend off the Zombies so we can get inside!” Lin Yi felt his strength rapidly draining; he couldn't hold on much longer.
At that moment, Jiao Jiao stormed up to Lin Yi with an expression of fury.
“What’s wrong?” Lin Yi asked, seeing her face filled with anger, which even made him feel a bit scared.
“They won’t open the city gates and there’s no support!” Jiao Jiao nearly shouted in frustration.
“How can this be?” Lin Yi was taken aback; this was something they had previously discussed with the commander on the other side.
Could it be that after breaking through all those encirclements to reach this point, they would ultimately be denied entry?
“Their Zombies are attacking too fiercely; they don’t have enough strength left to support us. If they open the gates now, the Zombies might rush in, which would lead to disaster!”
Hearing Jiao Jiao's words, Lin Yi found himself momentarily speechless. If it was because of his actions that the entire Guinea Defense Zone fell, then no one would be safe!
“Hmph! They are untrustworthy; why should we listen to them? If they don’t open the gates soon, I’ll just blow them open myself!” Beatrice could not tolerate such humiliation and drew her Silver Soul Battle Blade, ready to charge forward.
“Wait! Everyone, don’t act rashly. Let me go in and talk to them first!” Charlie squeezed through the crowd, looking excited as he addressed everyone.
"How did you get in?" everyone asked almost simultaneously, clearly thinking that Charlie was being unreasonable.
"Ah," at that moment, Lin Yi slapped his forehead and said, "I remember now! You can get in! But if they don't acknowledge you, you could be in danger!"
"Don't worry, Captain. You know what my other identity is!" As soon as Charlie finished speaking, a ripple surrounded him, and he vanished.
"Oh—got it, you're still a..." Lin Yi nodded, but before he could finish his sentence, Charlie's voice echoed again.
"I'm still a member of the royal family; who dares to touch me!"
However, shortly after that, Charlie truly left, and Lin Yi looked at everyone in shock, shrugging helplessly.
"He has the ability to become invisible and pass through barriers, so he should have gotten in by now," Lin Yi explained to the group, while most of the Golden Mercenary Corps members were still in a daze.
The Zombie Army seemed to sense something was wrong and immediately intensified their attacks, causing the pressure on their defenses to increase sharply. Lin Yi hadn't expected that after all their efforts to reach this place, they wouldn't even be able to enter the city gate.
At that moment, a sudden cheer erupted from atop the city wall. The next second, they heard a series of booming sounds echoing from the battlements.
Then dozens of long objects trailing intense flames shot wildly into the midst of the Zombie horde at an astonishing speed!
"That's the most terrifying weapon from a hundred years ago—the Katyusha Rocket Cluster!" someone suddenly exclaimed loudly.
