Everyone was momentarily taken aback by Lin Yi's words, but they quickly regained their composure. Those present were no fools and soon understood the implications of what Lin Yi had said.
"The Sahara Desert spans over nine million square kilometers. If we wander aimlessly, we might spend our entire lives without finding the Zombies' hiding place! However, based on the routes provided earlier regarding the Nile River, it’s clear we haven’t gone wrong!
Zombies also need moisture; otherwise, in extreme arid conditions, they are no different from being dead! We have been marching through the desert for over half a month and have nearly reached the central area of the Sahara Desert! This place is likely the lost lair!
They are continuously sending small groups of Zombies to harass us, which indicates their nervousness! After dealing with Zombies for so long, we have a general understanding of their situation. If they could overpower us, why wouldn’t they just confront us directly?
It’s evident that they cannot defeat us, so they resort to confusion tactics! Recently, I’ve been studying maps and satellite images and discovered an oasis depression not far from our location!
However, this depression was abandoned by humans ten years ago due to a sudden climate change that drastically reduced rainfall, making it unsuitable for human survival!
But! Zombies do not require as much moisture as humans do; often, they hardly consume any at all! Therefore, if those Zombies are hiding somewhere, I believe it’s very likely to be in this abandoned oasis depression!"
Lin Yi unfolded the entire holographic map and swiftly pointed out a patch of yellow-green terrain. Clearly, this small area of greenery was what Lin Yi suspected could be the hiding place for the Zombies!
"This depression appears to cover at least a thousand square kilometers, but suitable living areas are extremely limited." Pachy quickly calculated in his mind. As a former Special Operations Department captain, such skills were fundamental.
"Indeed, most areas have already turned into desert. However, this location was once in a region with higher rainfall. Although it is now unsuitable for human habitation due to climate changes, hiding millions of Zombies poses no problem! The area is filled with sand; Zombies can essentially enter a state of suspended animation to conserve energy!" Lin Yi continued analyzing the recent harassment by the Zombies. This prompted him to consider various possibilities while thoroughly examining the surrounding geography.
"This place is not far from the Ahaggar Plateau. If Zombies need water, they could go there to replenish themselves. However, our empty satellites and drones are constantly searching for their traces; they likely won’t venture into the Plateau area!" Lin Yi gestured to enlarge the holographic map to encompass the entire command vehicle. The area where everyone was located happened to be within the Plateau region, which stood over two thousand meters high and had sufficient moisture!
"Then why would Zombies choose this location? There are surely more places available!" someone questioned at that moment. The Sahara Desert isn’t just endless sand; there are multiple suitable hiding spots.
"This place is not only suitable for concealment but also lies at a central point. If Zombies head south across the Azawakh Valley, they can quickly reach the control range of the Guinea Defense Zone. Conversely, heading north allows them to cross the Atlas Mountains and traverse the Gibraltar Strait, threatening the Iberian Peninsula!"
"Lin Yi is right; this location offers both retreat and advance options. For humans, deserts are death zones. But for already Corpseified Zombies, they can endure in desert conditions without resupply for quite some time!" Pachy nodded in agreement; Lin Yi's reasoning was sound.
At that moment, Lin Yi closed the holographic map and looked up at everyone. "So what do you think? Should we head straight there? We're not far away; if we all accelerate towards it, we should arrive in about an hour!"
"Whatever you say, boss!" Witerson II was the first to raise his hand in agreement. For Witerson II, Lin Yi was the soul of their team.
"I have no objections!" White said while licking his somewhat parched lips.
"Agreed!"
“Captain, what is what!”
The others nodded in agreement. Rather than aimlessly worrying, it was better to fight hard and end it decisively!
Even if Lin Yi's analysis was wrong, it was still better than having no clue at all!
“Alright, get ready! I will go to the staff department, and of course, Ibn will come with me!” As Lin Yi said this, a smile spread across his face, and everyone nodded in understanding with smiles of their own.
Since this was the Zombie's lair, there would definitely be a significant amount of High-Level Combat Power present; it would be a fierce battle! After giving his orders, everyone returned to their respective Squads. They were all leaders of various Squads within the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps, so Lin Yi didn't need to gather everyone for discussions.
Once the meeting concluded, everyone simply needed to execute the results.
“Wu Hao, Jerry, you two should come with me just in case!” Before leaving, Lin Yi called out to Wu Hao and Jerry. He still didn't have absolute confidence when it came to negotiations.
...
The cooling system in the meeting vehicle was set to an optimal temperature for once, and everyone felt an unprecedented sense of coolness. However, at this moment, everyone remained silent; the oppressive heat seemed to take on a chill due to their quietness.
“Commander Lin's words are quite clear. Does anyone have any objections?” Ibn leaned against one side of the sofa and broke the silence first.
“Mr. Lin's proposal is certainly good, but I wonder if reaching that oasis at full speed will definitely lead us to the Zombie's lair?” An elderly man with white whiskers on his lips spoke up. He was the Minister of Defense, though Lin Yi chose not to reveal his identity.
With the intelligence team established by Jiao Jiao, Lin Yi could obtain information about individuals like the Minister of Defense through certain channels. However, since the other party only wished to engage with him as a staff member, there was no need for Lin Yi to expose anything.
“Yes, Captain Lin needs to understand that our resources are limited. How much energy will be wasted on a forced march? If we end up with no results, it would also deal a blow to the soldiers' morale!” Another slightly overweight elder with a clean-shaven beard chimed in; he was the Chief of Staff. At that moment, he sat comfortably on a soft leather sofa, appearing quite relaxed.
“We have already marched halfway across the Sahara Desert, but clearly our mission is not yet complete. Ultimately, we need to meet up with the military at the Guinea Defense Zone in the west, which means we cannot avoid passing through that oasis!” Lin Yi felt a surge of anger; he had tried to discuss matters with them out of goodwill but received no support at all, which frustrated him.
Ibn stood up and opened a holographic map. He then drew a direct line with his hand: “After bypassing the AJ Plateau, our original plan was to travel in a straight line across the entire Sahara Desert and eventually meet up with the Western Defense Zone along the northern Atlantic coast! However…”
At this point, Ibn glanced at several senior staff members before continuing: “If we can follow Commander Lin's proposed route, then we would only be deviating by several dozen kilometers. Even if we don't discover the Zombie's lair, we can still reach the Western Defense Zone more quickly!”
The Minister of Defense and Chief of Staff turned their heads away and looked at several other senior staff members who appeared to be of considerable age as well. However, these individuals did not have a deep understanding of specific tactical situations and were unable to immediately provide concrete counterarguments!
"Is there a problem with these people?" Lin Yi asked Wu Hao beside him. Although he already knew their identities, he couldn't rule out the possibility that they might pose significant issues.
Wu Hao leaned closer to Lin Yi's ear and replied in a lower voice, "I can only sense their fear and anxiety; I haven't noticed anything else."
These individuals were seasoned and had held high positions for a long time, so their psychological defenses were naturally much stronger than those of ordinary people. Although Wu Hao could perceive some of their emotions, they were not very intense.
"Everyone, I believe you all know that I am still the Commander of this expeditionary force, so I hope you will seriously consider my words. Otherwise, I can resign from the command center of the Nile Defense Zone. After all, if I cannot gain your cooperation, I have no right to hold this position!"
Lin Yi's intention was to resolve matters swiftly. He understood the scarcity of resources and was even more unwilling to waste time; the longer they delayed, the more preparation time they would give the Zombies.
The crowd did not expect Lin Yi, who usually had a pleasant demeanor, to suddenly wear a grim expression. They sat up straight, at least pretending to contemplate the situation. Although many had higher combat power than Lin Yi, few had the experience to follow orders. If Lin Yi truly decided to step down, no one could blame him.
"Since no one has anything to say, let's vote on whether to agree with my proposal!"
After Lin Yi finished speaking, he was the first to raise his hand. His gaze turned cold as he began scanning the entire venue; however, those present lowered their heads as if this matter did not concern them.
"I agree with Commander Lin's proposal!" Just as Lin Yi was about to employ some tactics, Ibn suddenly raised his hand!
Lin Yi knew well that Ibn was the real power player; he could easily oppose Lin Yi's proposal. If that happened, it was likely that only the Mercenary group would follow his orders while the rest of the soldiers would not listen to him at all.
