It was a distance of fifteen kilometers, which was quite far for the advancing army. Lin Yi's command vehicle was positioned in the middle of the entire army, making the distance even greater. Previously, Lin Yi would have rushed to the front, but now he simply agreed to rest in Oasis Town for the night, following standard procedures.
Having entered the Sahara Desert for two days, they had not encountered any Zombies along the way. However, everyone was exceptionally fatigued from marching under such harsh conditions.
The entire formation maintained its marching order, with Ibn leading the vanguard that first arrived at Oasis Town. Lin Yi soon followed, but due to the limited space in Oasis Town, most of the hundred thousand troops had to set up their marching tents around the oasis to rest.
Fortunately, having an oasis meant that the sandstorm conditions were much better here, and there was no danger of tents being blown away during rest periods.
After being cooped up in the vehicle for so long, Lin Yi and his companions finally got out to stretch their legs and began wandering around.
"Yi, have you noticed something strange about this town?" Li Qiweng asked as she linked her arm with Lin Yi's, her sparkling eyes scanning their surroundings.
The area was filled with ordinary residences, most of which were simple houses made from branches and mud. Only a few places had modern brick-and-stone buildings that appeared sporadically amidst the shadows of night.
"What’s wrong?" Lin Yi had just sent people to search around and found no signs of life. At that moment, he released his Consciousness and covered the area with his Psychic Power but detected nothing unusual.
Li Qiweng pointed with her jade-like finger towards a spot on their left front. "Most of the trees here are quite low due to lack of rain, but look at that tree over there; doesn’t it seem a bit odd?"
Following Li Qiweng's arm, Lin Yi quickly spotted an unusual tree. While most surrounding trees were only about three stories tall, this one appeared to be at least thirty meters high!
"What’s so strange about that? There are plenty of large trees everywhere; perhaps there's a good water source nearby that helped it grow," Lin Yi scratched his head and explained.
"That’s not right. The wind and sand conditions in the desert mean that a tree cannot grow that large on its own!" Li Qiweng insisted on her judgment. Compared to the surrounding trees, this one indeed seemed too peculiar.
"Alright then. Wen, you're tired; you should rest early," Lin Yi said, feeling somewhat astonished at Li Qiweng's fixation on a tree. A tree wasn’t a Zombie; there was no need to be afraid.
"Then why is there not a single person around?" Li Qiweng asked reluctantly. As a woman, she trusted her seemingly whimsical sixth sense.
Lin Yi's mind turned for a moment before he said, "Isn't it strange that if Zombies came, these people wouldn't run away? Why would they stay here to die? Even someone with a bit of intelligence wouldn't do something like that. Haha." As he spoke, he rubbed his face against Li Qiweng's flawless skin.
"But there are no signs of a struggle around, and this is clearly a very primitive tribe. If outsiders harbor ill intentions, they will defend their territory and won't flee easily!" Li Qiweng insisted on her opinion. The sudden appearance of Oasis Town gave her an unsettling sense of danger.
Lin Yi had certainly heard about the strong territorial instincts of Primitive Tribes. After listening to Li Qiweng, he also felt that something was off. He couldn't care less about finding a quiet place with Li Qiweng to indulge in their desires at that moment.
" Witerson II, take a few squads and search this area thoroughly again. Each squad should have at least one High-Level Mercenary with Six-Star combat power!" Lin Yi raised an eyebrow and immediately ordered. Previously, Ibn had sent ordinary soldiers to investigate, but they might not discover anything significant.
"How about you come with me to that tree over there?" Li Qiweng said with a flirtatious look, playfully pouting.
Lin Yi felt his entire body go weak at her words; he wanted nothing more than to pick her up and shower her with affection. However, given the current situation, he naturally wouldn't act on those impulses.
Both of them were Eight-Star Peak experts, and without hesitation, they dashed toward the astonishingly large tree. From a distance, it was clear that this was the center of the oasis, and there were no other trees within a hundred meters of it. The tree stood alone, but Lin Yi noticed that it was surrounded by a fence. Beyond the fence was a stone platform, on which lay some unknown, dried yellow bones.
Lin Yi walked over a few steps; the stone platform was covered in moss and appeared to have been abandoned for quite some time. Among the dried bones, he surprisingly discovered a human skull—clearly that of an infant!
"A sacrifice?" Lin Yi called out in his Consciousness. For Primitive Tribes, they often had rituals that outsiders found difficult to understand.
The stone platform now looked more like an ancient altar; the empty spaces around it were likely where this Primitive Tribe held their rituals.
In a daze, Lin Yi seemed to see a group of primitive people clad only in Fur, chanting incomprehensible incantations as they danced wildly around the enormous tree with torches in hand, releasing every active factor from their cells.
"Yi, do you smell something?" Li Qiweng suddenly twitched her nostrils and asked in astonishment, seemingly unable to believe her own judgment.
"The smell of blood?"
A sudden gust of wind swept through the desert, causing the surrounding trees to sway their branches violently. Shadows flickered ominously all around them.
Lin Yi shuddered under the weight of his consciousness. This place looked like it had been abandoned for a long time; how could there still be a smell of blood? Moreover, mixed with the scent of blood was a hint of something vegetal, which felt quite abnormal.
At that moment, Lin Yi's earpiece suddenly crackled with the urgent voice of Witerson II.
"Boss, we've spotted a Zombie! High-level!"
Witerson II's tone was frantic, clearly indicating that he was in a dire situation. Although Witerson II's combat ability wasn't as formidable as Lin Yi's, he could still unleash Six-Star power thanks to the War God Suit. If he sensed something was off, it was evident that the enemy's strength was not to be underestimated.
A wave of invisible energy radiated outward from Lin Yi, who immediately unleashed all his Psychic Power.
Witerson II was among the first to follow Lin Yi and played a crucial role in his rise to become a Mercenary Captain. Lin Yi would not treat him lightly.
In the next moment, an image of Witerson II appeared in Lin Yi's mind, and he blurred into nothingness.
"Northwest at forty-five degrees, one hundred twenty meters!" This was the coordinate left for Li Qiweng just as Lin Yi vanished.
As soon as Lin Yi's voice faded, Li Qiweng also blurred and disappeared alongside him.
Witerson II had just managed to evade a fatal strike from a Zombie using the protective capabilities of the War God Suit. However, even though he dodged the direct attack, he still felt a searing pain in his abdomen where he had been struck.
At this moment, Lin Yi finally got a clear look at his attacker: a primitive-looking Zombie with bronze skin and long hair tied with a strip of Fur around its waist. Despite its grotesque appearance, its face bore a striking resemblance to that of a human, except for the decayed flesh from its cheeks down to its jawline.
"Seven-Star Level!" The Intelligent System within Witerson II quickly assessed the strength of the Zombie that had suddenly emerged from the shadows.
A cold sweat broke out on Witerson II's brow, but he immediately reported this information to Lin Yi.
The Seven-Star Zombie, having missed its initial attack, showed no hesitation. Seizing the opportunity while Witerson II was momentarily stunned, it raised its dark iron club and swung it toward Witerson II's head!
The mercenaries patrolling with Witerson II had just realized what was happening, but it was already too late to implement a rescue.
A fierce gust of wind swept through the crowd, making everyone feel slightly unsteady on their feet.
At that moment, a shadow rapidly expanded in their sight! The shadow charged directly toward the dark stick, exuding an astonishing momentum!
With a dull thud, the shadow reached out a hand and firmly grasped the black rod!
The Zombie, taken by surprise at the sudden emergence of a powerful figure who seized its weapon, contorted its face in rage. Several white worms crawled out from its face and fell to the ground.
"Slash!" A booming voice suddenly rang out. From within the shadow erupted a burst of white energy, and in the next moment, the shadow staggered back a few steps as the white blade-like energy sliced toward the Zombie's head!
Everyone felt a blur before their eyes; the once-mighty Zombie was abruptly cleaved in half with a loud "splash," black blood gushing forth instantly.
"Boss!" Witerson II exclaimed in delight, feeling even more admiration for Lin Yi. He had managed to cut a Seven-Star Zombie in half in just one exchange!
The night was as still as water, but at that moment, a series of howls echoed around them as Zombies began to crawl up from the soft sand.
These Zombies were clad only in fur, their skin either dark or bronze. Lin Yi's forces had inadvertently stumbled into Zombie Town!
