Lin Yi stepped out alone, not because he wanted to leave, but because after he promised himself to lead the Nile Coalition, the other party made it clear that he could leave. This filled Lin Yi with a deep sense of sorrow; he was still just a big shot among the errand runners.
People needed heroes, and he was a hero, so he could not refuse this mission. He understood the public's expectations deeply and knew that if he disappointed them, their anger would overshadow all previous praises. Perhaps people could understand, but those big shots had ways to ignite the people's anger.
However, as he stepped out, Lin Yi unexpectedly saw Ibn, who looked weary and disheveled as he emerged from a side room of the command center.
"Captain Lin, what a coincidence!" Ibn saluted Lin Yi in a military manner, to which Lin Yi merely nodded in response.
Suddenly, Lin Yi slapped his thigh and exclaimed, "What is your relationship with President Nefel?"
Ibn smiled in surprise and replied, "He is my father. Why? Did he mention me?"
Lin Yi shook his head. He felt that Ibn looked somewhat familiar when he first saw President Nefel; it turned out that the father and son bore a resemblance. Both had thick, curly hair, eyes with a hint of brown, and elongated faces.
"I'll catch up with you another time; I have to go now!" Lin Yi heard Ouyang Shasha's urgent voice in his earpiece, as if she had something pressing to discuss with him.
It was already quite late, so Lin Yi felt it was inappropriate to linger.
...
The hall of Base Camp was currently crowded with people, most of whom were seated around the edges. In the center stood a dozen individuals dressed in black combat suits. Among them, an elderly man with white hair and a one-armed young man beside him were particularly eye-catching. Ouyang Shasha stood next to them, looking anxious as she watched Lin Yi.
"We indeed have had our grievances in the past, but that was merely an accidental clash. This time you can overlook the fact that I killed some of your people; I will naturally not hold your previous kidnapping of my teammates against you!
Miss Ouyang has been following us for some time and has helped us considerably. She personally pleaded for you; I won't make things difficult for you. As long as you are willing to join my Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps, I will treat you well. But let me be clear: if you harbor any ill intentions, I will show no mercy!"
Since arriving at the Nile Defense Zone, the Darknight Vampire had been struggling to survive there. This time’s zombie attack resulted in heavy casualties; even Lin Yi suffered losses exceeding a hundred men—let alone the Darknight Vampire. The once-thriving team led by Benito was nearly wiped out during this zombie assault; only these dozen or so remained from a group of over three hundred.
Lin Yi's team was diverse but generally under his control. The newcomers Sean and Roman had basically decided to follow him without hesitation; only a few were still uncertain. Even if all members of Darknight Vampire joined him now, it would only add about ten more people to his ranks. Among them, the strongest Carlo was merely at Six-Star combat power—nothing for Lin Yi to fear.
The remaining dozen or so had combat power above Three-Star. This was a significant gain for Lin Yi. Although his entire mercenary group consisted mostly of personnel above Star Level, each mission they undertook was increasingly perilous.
After hearing Lin Yi's words, Benito, Carlo, and Ouyang Shasha all bowed slightly in gratitude; naturally, the other ten or so individuals had no objections either.
"From now on, there will be no organization called Darknight Vampire in this world; we will wholeheartedly serve the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps." To demonstrate his determination, Benito immediately tore off the insignia on his arm that represented his identity.
The others quickly followed suit, while Carlo directly bit off the piece of the badge that had once brought him glory from his own arm. The crisis of the zombies erupted, prompting many to reflect on themselves. Perhaps the most important thing in this world is simply to live well.
"Alright, it's getting late. Everyone should rest now. 46, you will temporarily lead the new members. We will make other arrangements later," Lin Yi said as he stood up and called out to 46, who had been hiding behind him, also known as Lone Wolf.
There were indeed not many people Lin Yi could truly trust at this moment, but 46 was definitely someone he could rely on; he would not do anything outside of his orders!
Seeing the once-revered Lone Wolf obeying Lin Yi's commands made Benito's eyes dim instantly. The once ambitious Thousand-Faced Fox seemed to have lost his fighting spirit, merely wanting to get through the remaining days.
Carlo's eyes were filled with deep unwillingness. If it weren't for Ouyang Shasha constantly stopping him, it was hard to tell what actions he might take. The arm Carlo had severed could have been replaced with a powerful prosthetic through biological bionic technology, but he insisted on keeping the severed limb as a reminder not to forget his vendetta.
However, now Lin Yi had grown to an unattainable height in just over a year; seeking revenge seemed almost hopeless. Moreover, for self-preservation, he could only rely on this "enemy," which left him feeling deeply resentful.
Watching the dozen or so people rush out, Lin Yi let out a long sigh of relief. 46's combat power had already reached Seven-Star Level; leading this group of once-dominant Darknight Vampires would pose no significant issues.
At that moment, Renesmee and Nicolas stepped forward together to Lin Yi's side. Neither had expected the other to make such a move, and they exchanged awkward smiles. Nicolas's previously somewhat lewd expression turned bright red from embarrassment.
"Ice Sister!"
"Nicolas!"
"You go first!" The last phrase was shouted in unison by both of them, creating a moment of camaraderie that drew curious looks from those around them. However, there were also some who were displeased, their lips twitching in annoyance.
"Um, is there something urgent?" Lin Yi turned to look at the two; their expressions seemed to suggest something more than just casual conversation.
Renesmee gestured for Nicolas to speak first, and he did not hesitate: "It seems they have our Holy Clan's bloodline, but they don't quite feel like it."
"Let's discuss this in my dormitory; everyone else can attend to their own matters," Lin Yi said with a slight frown. There were too many people around; it was possible that others from different factions might come over to eavesdrop. After all, there were nearly two thousand people in the Mercenary Alliance, and even Lin Yi couldn't recognize them all.
Everyone understood what he meant and dispersed accordingly while Lin Yi led the two directly to his bedroom. Li Qiweng observed and subtly indicated whether he should leave; Lin Yi naturally wasn't worried about Li Qiweng harming him. If even Li Qiweng harbored ill intentions towards him, then there would be very few people left in this world whom Lin Yi could trust.
Lin Yi and the others sat around a table while Li Qiweng kindly poured everyone a glass of water. Nicolas seemed somewhat uncomfortable, fidgeting awkwardly enough to amuse Renesmee.
"First of all, Carlo was actually the first vampire I encountered—oh no, I mean one of your Holy Clan members," Lin Yi said with a slight embarrassed smile. The term 'vampire' was originally a derogatory label humans used against them and shouldn't be spoken in their presence like that.
"It's alright; it's just a term after all, and it does align with our customs," Renesmee replied with a gentle smile, her bright teeth and sparkling eyes radiating warmth like the melting chill of spring.
"I can sense that he has the bloodline of the Holy Clan, but it's not very pure," Renesmee frowned, clearly puzzled.
"Then, is he a hybrid of human and your Holy Clan?" Lin Yi asked tentatively. He had heard about Carlo's thin wings; aside from vampires, there was no other explanation.
"Boss, actually, our Holy Clan cannot interbreed with humans. We've tried many times without success in producing offspring, which is also why our population is dwindling," Nicolas explained, though his gaze was fixed on Renesmee.
Renesmee nodded, while Lin Yi looked utterly astonished. Benito's Mercenary group was called Darknight Vampire, so it was definitely related to vampires. But now that Nicolas and Renesmee had confirmed that Carlo was not a vampire, what exactly was his identity?
"Perhaps he is a mutated human; we can't rule out the possibility of a throwback phenomenon where wings develop," Lin Yi reassured himself. He really didn't know if taking in Darknight Vampire was a good idea.
"How about this: you all temporarily manage Darknight Vampire together with Lone Wolf. This way, you can find opportunities to investigate further," Lin Yi felt compelled to be cautious; after all, there was something strange about this situation.
...
The African Union did not give Lin Yi much time—only half a month to prepare. During this time, he needed to come up with a feasible plan. Of course, the Nile Defense Command Center would provide Lin Yi with a professional advisory team to assist him in strategizing. The army mobilized consisted of one hundred thousand troops: fifty thousand were elite soldiers from before, and fifty thousand were trained after the Zombie Crisis emerged. Most of the forces still needed to remain at Base Camp, as it was their last retreat.
Lin Yi never expected that he would have the opportunity to command such a vast army. Unfortunately, he only held the title of Acting Commander and hadn't even managed to attain the rank of general. Moreover, he felt more like a puppet; many times the advisors insisted on their opinions, and Lin Yi found it difficult to change their minds.
"Hello, new member Ibn has been ordered to join the Expeditionary Force; please approve my request, Commander Lin!" Just as night fell before the army's deployment, Ibn arrived at Lin Yi's encampment and saluted him with a standard military gesture.
