A gust of warm wind blew through, and Kofi's frail body seemed to float with it. Lin Yi looked at the elderly man before him and suddenly felt a pang of sympathy; at over a hundred years old, he still had to toil so hard.
"Thank you all for your understanding. After you finish eating, I hope you will accept the honorary medals our country has prepared for you. I also hope you will be willing to accept them. I've been preoccupied with issues in the Southern Defense Zone lately and have neglected you all," Kofi said. Despite his emaciated figure, standing on the high platform gave him an imposing presence.
"Now, everyone can start enjoying the delicious food," Kofi waved his hand and stepped down.
However, this time Kofi did not pay attention to Lin Yi but instead sat alone in a rocking chair, with Jimmy standing obediently in front of him.
The mercenaries, already starving, disregarded their image and rushed to the table laden with food, quickly grabbing what they could and digging in. The scene soon erupted into chaos, turning the military camp into a disarray.
Lin Yi did not approach but stood a short distance away from Kofi, quietly observing the situation. He sensed that something was amiss, but looking at Kofi's relaxed demeanor left him completely puzzled about what was really happening.
If it truly was an issue involving Wang Zijun, then his team members and the others were mixed together now; if a fight broke out, it would be difficult to distinguish friend from foe.
"Captain Lin, why aren't you eating? Do you think the food I prepared isn't good enough?" Kofi waved at Lin Yi, signaling him to come over.
Lin Yi walked over a few steps but couldn't help saying, "The food is certainly good, but I don't know if I can eat it in peace."
"As long as your heart is strong enough, of course you can finish it all!" Kofi completely ignored Lin Yi's concerns and continued to squint his eyes, lightly tapping his bony fingers on the armrest of the rocking chair as if keeping time to a song.
Just as Lin Yi was about to say something else, a figure suddenly burst through the entrance of the camp! Lin Yi was startled and prepared to strike when he heard the person shout loudly, "Not good! The zombies are coming!"
At that moment, Lin Yi could see clearly that it was an officer with Three-Star Combat Power, who looked panicked as he gazed at Kofi.
"What’s going on?" Kofi still appeared unfazed.
"The general sent me to inform you. In retaliation for our reclaiming the city occupied by zombies, they are launching another large-scale attack. Five Eight-Star Combat Power zombies are coming our way, and two Nine-Star Combat Power zombies have joined the fray!"
At this moment, Kofi finally felt anxious; he understood better than anyone else what it meant to be at Star Level Nine.
"Have the two gentlemen left?" A sense of urgency finally appeared on Kofi's usually calm face. His once frail body straightened up suddenly.
"Yes. The two gentlemen at Star Level Nine have already departed, but the general with Eight-Star Combat Power is too formidable. Even our ten warriors equipped with War God Suits are struggling a bit. After all, only four of them possess Eight-Star Level combat strength."
Kofi's expression turned troubled, and he then looked apologetically at Lin Yi, his meaning clear.
"Alright, Mr. Coffey, we share the fate of the Defense Zone. We can only hope that the front line can hold out a little longer." Lin Yi did not feel much fear about fighting the Zombies. Compared to these Zombies, it was the complexity of human hearts that Lin Yi found difficult to gauge.
"All personnel assemble!" Lin Yi used his Psychic Power to transmit his voice into the ears of every team member.
The mercenaries, already accustomed to this rhythm, quickly gathered together, and Wang Zijun immediately assembled his team upon learning of the Zombie attack.
Kofi looked at the assembled team, and hope rekindled in his murky eyes.
"Thank you all." Kofi bent slightly and bowed sincerely to everyone. An elderly man who had endured a century's worth of hardships now bowed earnestly to the mercenaries below him in an effort to contribute his part.
"What good is loyalty if you are destined to die? You will not witness the final victory." At that moment, a cold voice echoed across the military camp's open space from all directions, yet no one knew who owned that voice.
When this unfamiliar voice rang out, Lin Yi clearly saw Kofi tremble slightly on stage, nearly collapsing to the ground. Jimmy, who had been standing nearby, hurried over to support Kofi, allowing the old man to regain his footing.
"Old friend, are you really going to betray this country?" Kofi's voice trembled; it was evident he could not accept this outcome.
"You have enjoyed the respect of the world along your journey, but I have only been able to silently assist you from behind the scenes, forever living in darkness. Now that darkness is set to rule the world, why shouldn't I fully immerse myself in it?" The voice remained elusive; Lin Yi's attempts to lock onto it with his Psychic Power proved futile time and again.
"Ha ha, respect, glory? Are these important to you? If they are, I can give them all to you!" Kofi raised his head, staring into a void in the low sky, while Lin Yi swept through with his Psychic Power several times but found nothing.
"No, what I want now is your life. I want this country to become a paradise for the divine race, and then I can attain supreme glory!" The voice grew increasingly frenzied, and a faint wave of energy was suddenly captured by Lin Yi; it was the same force he had encountered earlier in Kofi's room!
"I can give you my life, but yours must remain." Kofi's hunched body trembled, and his aura surged dramatically, completely unlike that of an old man on the verge of death.
"Hahaha, you're old; your abilities have diminished significantly. You can only deceive those fools. My combat power remains intact; how could you possibly defeat me?" The voice became even more deranged, yet Lin Yi still had not discovered its owner.
"The world is always changing. I may be old, but the young are constantly growing." Kofi's gaze shifted slightly, but it was not directed at Lin Yi.
"Do you expect these outsiders to help? Are you tired of so many dead that you want to drag them along to their graves?"
As soon as the voice fell, an overwhelming aura suddenly erupted in mid-air. Although Lin Yi already possessed Eight-Star Level combat power, he found himself unable to move under this pressure.
The others fared no better; Lin Yi clearly saw the two Eight-Star Level Vice Captains of the Pacific Mercenary Corps wearing expressions of fear. They had just recently felt the terror of Nine-Star Level power. Although Alyah had been revived by the Sea God Technique, she had not fully recovered and was sweating profusely, clearly struggling to hold on.
Just the sheer might was enough to overwhelm those with Eight-Star Combat Power, while others collapsed directly onto the ground, as if bound by invisible shackles.
"Of course not, old friend. After all these years of friendship, do you really want it to end before this group of Zombies?" Kofi seemed unaffected and continued speaking.
"Friendship? Kofi, you've lived for over a hundred years; can't you see that such cheap things are meaningless? Interests—everything is hollow in the face of interests, including our century-long friendship!" This time Lin Yi finally caught sight of the figure behind the voice; however, he was floating high in the air, making it hard for Lin Yi to see clearly.
"What have the Zombies given you that makes you serve them like this?" Kofi continued to question, though Lin Yi noticed a strange flush on his face—clearly, Kofi was still affected by that aura.
"Kofi, there's no need to waste your breath. Your Psychic Power may be powerful, but it's still insufficient against me. Don't think you can deceive me! As for what the divine has given me, what qualifications does a mortal like you have to understand?" The old friend in Kofi's mouth clearly showed no respect for him and didn't even want to reveal why he had allied with the Zombies.
At that moment, Lin Yi realized that the seemingly ordinary Kofi was actually a master of Psychic Power. However, Lin Yi could not sense any fluctuations of Kofi's Psychic Power, which meant that at the very least, Kofi's Psychic Power was stronger than his own.
"Then you must die!" Kofi declared, and Lin Yi felt an overwhelming aura surge forth.
At this time, the figure that had been floating in the air suddenly swayed a few times but quickly stabilized.
Suddenly, the figure let out a scream, "What the hell is this thing!"
Upon hearing this, Lin Yi turned to look in the direction of the voice, and a bizarre scene unfolded before his eyes. The figure was being rapidly covered by something rock-like starting from its feet.
"This is where your ambitions will be buried!" Kofi shouted loudly, and his previously sparse hair began to move as if blown by an unseen wind. Ripples appeared in the air, indicating the immense power of Kofi's Psychic abilities.
"It’s impossible! Why can’t I move!" The figure struggled but found that its legs were completely encased in rock, rendering it unable to move at all.
"Hahaha! You must die today; any traitor must perish!" Kofi's eyes began to glow a deep red, and even the exposed skin took on an eerie crimson hue.
The figure suddenly stopped struggling and looked at Kofi with endless despair. "You’re fighting me with your own life. You would expend your life just to kill me for this decaying world!"
The speed at which the rock covered him was astonishing. Even though the figure in mid-air continued to try to resist, it seemed as if it were bound tightly by chains. Though it managed to knock off some of the rocks, new layers quickly replaced them.
Soon, the rock enveloped its chest, covered its neck, and finally completely obscured its head.
