"Long time no see." Lin Yi was the first to react, recognizing that the visitor was Slo.
Slo clearly hadn't expected to see Lin Yi again, but being someone who had weathered many storms, he quickly smiled and walked over. He then extended his only right hand, which bore thick calluses.
"Captain Lin, we meet again." Slo's voice was a bit hoarse; after more than a year apart, he had lost even more weight, and his cheekbones jutted out prominently.
"A Star Level?" Lin Yi was somewhat surprised by Slo's progress. Despite having lost an arm, he had managed to break through to Star-Level Combat Power, which was nothing short of a miracle.
"Jimmy has already achieved Two-Star combat power." Slo's expression turned somewhat awkward; Jimmy had lost a leg but was still stronger than him.
"Where is Jimmy?" Witerson II's expression tightened as he stepped forward to ask.
"Three months ago, after Jimmy broke through to Two-Star combat power, he disappeared. I've been searching for him for a long time but haven't found him." Slo's demeanor was despondent; he felt guilty for not fulfilling the task Lin Yi had entrusted to him.
Lin Yi had anticipated this outcome; it was also his fault for delaying things and not finding Jimmy sooner. After a good year, he had come to retrieve him, but Jimmy had waited for a year and three months.
"Then why are you here?" Lin Yi sensed that Slo's mood wasn't great and seemed troubled.
Slo paused for a moment and forced a smile. "Actually, it's nothing much. In two days, there will be a large-scale Attack. This time the headquarters has ordered us to reclaim a stronghold. I will be participating, but I don't know if I'll make it back. So I came to see if Jimmy has returned here; perhaps this is our last meeting."
"The Attack is starting in two days?" Lin Yi couldn't focus on Slo's melancholic feelings; he was more concerned about the timing of the battle. The Mercenary Alliance competition was in three days, yet the Attack on Addis Ababa Defense Zone was happening earlier—what could be the reason?
"Yes. I just received news that a new individual weapon has been developed and is expected to be issued to us tonight. The remaining time will be spent familiarizing ourselves with this weapon before heading straight to the battlefield," Slo explained.
"What rank do you hold now?" Lin Yi knew that due to Slo's previous retreat and his arm issue, he had been relegated to a clerical position. Now it seemed he would be going back into battle.
"Private; what rank could I possibly have?" Slo chuckled bitterly. He had earned his share of merits, yet it seemed no one ever acknowledged his contributions.
Lin Yi squinted slightly, feeling something was off. Although Slo had a troubled past, he had at least redeemed himself; Paul had also experienced failures. Yet with Three-Star combat power, Paul had attained the rank of Major General—surely it wouldn't be unreasonable for Slo, despite his past mistakes, to hold at least a Major rank.
"Which unit are you in?" Lin Yi decided to ask Paul for help; Slo had taken care of Jimmy for quite some time, and Lin Yi was someone who valued gratitude.
"Paul's Iron Wolf Brigade," Slo replied nonchalantly.
Lin Yi had no words. He simply exchanged a glance with Witerson II before telling Slo to head back first and to contact them if there was any news about Jimmy.
...
After leaving his contact information, Slo quickly departed. It wasn't until he had walked quite a distance that Lin Yi spoke up, "Paul is problematic."
"What should we do? We're on someone else's turf," Witerson II replied, not being foolish. Even if Slo could redeem himself, he should have at least earned a rank by now. Yet, he was still just a private!
"I'll have a word with him and see how things go," Lin Yi said, puzzled about what Paul was planning. There was no reason for him to make things difficult for Slo.
Witerson nodded, and the two returned to their base. This time, not only did they fail to find Jimmy, but they also discovered that something was off with Paul, which put Lin Yi in an extremely foul mood.
The conditions at the Addis Ababa Defense Zone were naturally not as good as those at the Greater Paris Defense Zone. The thousands of them were crammed into tents set up on a school playground. The commanders, including Lin Yi, were staying in the former teachers' dormitory, while some classrooms still had students attending lessons! The sudden arrival of Lin Yi and his team did not disrupt the students' learning; there wasn't even a hint of curiosity from them. Just based on this, Lin Yi couldn't help but admire the person in charge of this Defense Zone; they managed to maintain order even under the pressure of defending against zombie attacks.
Since arriving at this Defense Zone, Wang Zijun had ignored Lin Yi completely. Instead, she hid away in a room with several assistants, seemingly occupied with something unknown. Initially, Lin Yi had planned not to let Ying Sa come along, but she insisted on joining him. Her father was missing, and her relatives were nowhere to be found.
What surprised Lin Yi even more was that Li Qiweng actually agreed to let Ying Sa come along! In such circumstances, Lin Yi felt something was off; he knew Li Qiweng's character well enough to believe he wouldn't act so out of character! Yet the fact remained that Li Qiweng had done just that and appeared completely unconcerned.
With too many questions swirling in his mind, Lin Yi decided not to dwell on them any longer. The next task was to rest well; soon it would be time to go out and hunt zombies. Therefore, Lin Yi didn't insist on training everyone; instead, he directly distributed one thousand Contribution Points to each person, resulting in over two million Contribution Points disappearing in an instant. However, compared to Lin Yi's current worth, this amount was insignificant. His request was simple: he wanted everyone to spend all of those Contribution Points! He also informed everyone that the Blood Envoy's over two hundred million Contribution Points would serve as communal funds for the entire Mercenary group. From then on, ten percent of the Contribution Points earned from zombie hunts would go into the communal account while the rest would belong to individuals.
Everyone knew that Lin Yi contributed the most during missions; during their last zombie hunt, nearly half of the spoils were his. This time, when he took out over two hundred million Contribution Points, even those who previously had reservations about him collectively expressed their utmost loyalty!
After giving everyone a final warning, Lin Yi announced their dismissal. Having been under tension for so long, he couldn't keep suppressing everyone's emotions indefinitely. However, opinions among the girls regarding Lin Yi's actions were polarized; some fully supported him while others expressed disdain.
Despite differing opinions, Lin Yi didn't have the energy to explain himself further. He needed to find Paul soon; he needed to understand how the people from Addis Ababa Defense Zone would cooperate with them in exterminating zombies outside the city!
...
"Mechanical Armor? Is this your new individual weapon?" Lin Yi looked at the set of Mechanical Armor displayed by Paul using a holographic projector with a hint of shock in his eyes. This device resembled a humanoid metal structure but left many parts unable to cover a person's body completely. However, its weaponry was powerful and highly efficient.
"Our technology is still quite rough around the edges. However, ordinary soldiers wearing this armor can easily handle zombies below Star Level. As long as they aren't surrounded by several Giant Zombies at once, one soldier in this armor can hold his ground!" Paul said with a broad smile. He knew that even elite soldiers found it nearly impossible to take down a Giant Zombie; now with this Mechanical Armor, dealing with three Giant Zombies would be manageable.
"What if someone with High-Level Combat Power wears this kind of equipment?" Lin Yi asked, a hint of curiosity in his voice. The War God Suit he wore only enhanced his combat power by one Star Level.
"Anyone above Three-Star wearing this kind of armor is useless. This set of equipment was initially designed for ordinary soldiers. Even after further research by our scientists, it can only be used by those with Two-Star Combat Power," Paul shrugged helplessly. He often felt that his own combat power was too low, and if he could be stronger, that would certainly be the best outcome.
"It features two automatically sensing laser guns, three Grenade Launchers, and a 1.2-meter-long alloy steel sword. The most powerful aspect is its flight system, which supports long-distance flight!" Paul continued to manipulate the virtual image of the Mechanical Armor, explaining it to Lin Yi. He knew that Lin Yi's War God Suit had a very short flight range, while the Mechanical Armor, despite its bulkiness and lack of agility, had significantly superior flight capabilities.
"You probably already know that we need to take action soon, and this time all soldiers of the Iron Wolf Brigade will use Mechanical Armor for a practical training exercise!" Paul's eyes were fixed on the virtual projection, a mysterious glint flashing in them.
Lin Yi's heart sank; he had only come to ask Paul about his preparations and did not expect him to know what he knew.
"Are you monitoring me?" A cold light flickered in Lin Yi's eyes; this was the only explanation.
"Captain Lin," Paul smiled. "The entire Addis Ababa Defense Zone has been under tight surveillance for a long time. It's not that I have someone watching you. From the moment you arrived here, all your actions have been monitored by us. This has been approved by the Global Security Conference to prevent the spread of the Zombie Virus. All defense zones around the world are doing this; however, only a few people are aware of it to avoid causing panic." Paul's gaze remained fixed on the Mechanical Armor, revealing an infinite fascination.
The truth always lies in the hands of the strong. Lin Yi chose not to speak further and simply told Paul that he hoped to be informed when the Iron Wolf Brigade used the Mechanical Armor so he could join them.
