Renesmee and Lin Yi executed a perfect combination, annihilating over thirty thousand Zombies. This devastating blow halted the Zombies' attacks, but they remained tightly encircled around the inner city. Through drone surveillance, Lin Yi discovered that the area within a hundred miles was swarming with Zombies, making any thought of escape seem like a distant dream.
Despite the power of their strike, Renesmee suffered a backlash. Although Lulu's dark energy provided full support and saved her life, she spent most of her time in a comatose state, completely devoid of combat ability. While Nicolas seemed unaffected, Lin Yi could sense the intense anger he was struggling to control. Tina, on the other hand, directly confronted Lin Yi, berating him to the point where he could barely hold his head up. The twin brothers, though silent, cast cold glances at Lin Yi that spoke volumes.
Lin Yi attempted to contact Wu Hao several times, but each effort ended in failure. Others faced similar fates; it felt as if the entire world had abandoned them. This mercenary squad of just over three hundred appeared to be suspended in some desolate corner of the universe, facing an endless threat from demons.
The battle raged on, but their weapons were rapidly depleting. Even Taishan's immense strength was reduced to hurling stones torn from the city itself as their most potent firepower. If this continued, Lin Yi and his team would have no choice but to resort to hand-to-hand combat.
The threat of the Zombies loomed like a Sword of Damocles, ready to fall at any moment. This situation persisted for three long months; the scorching summer had passed, giving way to a bleak autumn. While food supplies remained sufficient within the city, they consisted solely of dry military rations. Even gourmet meals would lose their appeal after months of monotonous consumption.
No one had died due to Zombie attacks, but as time wore on, fatigue set in among the group, leading to a decline in their combat effectiveness. No matter how many Zombies they exterminated, their numbers remained stubbornly at one hundred thousand. Even though the members of the Mercenary Squad were exceptionally skilled individuals, impatience began to show on their faces.
Though the Zombies continued their assaults, they sent an Intelligent Zombie every month in attempts to persuade surrender—each time met with rejection from Lin Yi.
After turning down the fourth surrender proposal from a Zombie, Lin Yi's curiosity became unbearable. He had no choice but to enlist Ouyang Shasha's help to use her Invisibility Ability and follow that Zombie back for a closer look. He had refrained from doing so earlier because her invisibility could easily be compromised when faced with powerful Psychic Powers.
Ouyang Shasha did not refuse Lin Yi; before leaving, she playfully blinked her large eyes at him, leaving him feeling awkward. Afterward, when Ouyang Shasha did not return promptly, Lin Yi felt guilty and secretly ventured out of the city in search of her. Despite his efforts to mask his presence, he was ultimately discovered by a powerful Zombie and had no choice but to retreat in embarrassment. By then, Ouyang Shasha had returned as well—but she looked terrible; even her lips were pale. It turned out she had followed that Zombie into its lair and overheard them discussing how "that person possesses great abilities and must be captured for study." Unfortunately for her, a strong Psychic Power Zombie detected her presence but failed to pinpoint her exact location. However, this powerful Zombie maintained tight surveillance over a hundred-meter radius until it finally released its Psychic Power monitoring at nightfall—allowing Ouyang Shasha to escape.
When she learned that Lin Yi had risked venturing out for her sake, a hint of unnatural color flushed her previously pale face, creating an awkward atmosphere.
At that moment, another Zombie attack commenced, providing Lin Yi with an opportunity for relief. Nighttime was when Zombies preferred to strike; with their energy reserves low, they could only afford minimal lighting after dark. Most of their electricity was reserved for defensive electric nets; without these nets in place, it would be nearly impossible to hold back the Zombies from breaching the walls!
"If we were all as strong as you—even if we were just two or three levels weaker—we could charge right out!" Raymond remarked with deep emotion as he watched the relentless tide of Zombies attempting to break through after recovering from the nightmare of losing their mechanical squad.
"If one could be an ordinary person, who would be willing to do these things?" Lin Yi was already feeling somewhat weary. Over the past ten months, he had experienced too much. Many times, he would rather go back to being a clerk than spend his days fighting and worrying endlessly.
"I am a soldier; soldiers die on the battlefield!" Raymond's entire demeanor changed into a fiery rage as he thought of the zombies slaughtering his soldiers. "Our individual equipment is still inadequate. Once we encounter high-powered zombies, we won't even have time to fire our guns!" He lamented further.
Lin Yi couldn't help but nod in agreement. He then swung his blade at the approaching zombies. A few exceptionally strong zombies were charging at him, and as the most powerful fighter among them, he naturally became the fireman on the battlefield.
After the fifth siege began, Lin Yi felt that escape was hopeless and signaled Nicolas and the other four vampires that they could leave on their own. At that moment, Renesmee had also recovered somewhat. Although the power of the Frozen Domain had diminished significantly, self-preservation was no longer an issue. They could fly, and threats in the air were far less than those on the ground, giving them a good chance of survival. However, Nicolas insisted on staying behind, claiming that the Holy Clan was not made up of cowards.
In the blink of an eye, it was the last month of the year, and a series of festive celebrations had slowly arrived. The Defense Center had run out of delicious food, leaving only unpalatable military rations. Even those were in short supply.
To boost morale, Lin Yi contacted Nicolas and led the four of them to sneak through the zombies' weak defenses during a brief pause in fighting to search for food outside. In the end, their efforts paid off as they discovered a large meat processing plant's cold storage in an abandoned city! The five of them were like beggars who had found gold, greedily carrying back as much food as they could bear.
Although they encountered dangers along the way, they ultimately returned to the city safely. However, since the zombies had already noticed their movements, as soon as Lin Yi arrived at the Defense Center, the zombie attacks began! They didn't even have time to enjoy their feast before they had to rush out to fight for their lives!
This battle was also the hardest one Lin Yi and his team had fought in six months; they battled for a full twelve hours. Just when they were about to collapse from exhaustion, the zombies finally retreated. Unfortunately, during this encounter, several mercenaries lost their lives to the zombies—this was the first time anyone had died in six months!
Life had to go on. Everyone quickly composed themselves after the battle. The peaceful night before Christmas had passed, and they officially entered into Christmas Day. This time, their food supply was particularly abundant; the four of them brought back nearly eight hundred pounds of food, while Lin Yi alone carried over three hundred pounds!
After more than half a year of tasteless military rations, they finally got to eat meat again. For the first time, everyone truly felt a joyful atmosphere. However, even so, half of them still needed to guard the walls while the other half could enjoy their meal in peace.
The aroma of meat filled the entire Defense Center, instantly lifting everyone's spirits as they feasted heartily and laughed loudly!
In the days that followed, Lin Yi almost always took Nicolas and his companions with him to "retrieve" food from the cold storage. After all, this would also strengthen everyone's combat abilities! Even when he had enough energy, Lin Yi would make two trips back and forth just to bring back more food!
As the seventh month began, Lin Yi once again ventured into the cold storage to retrieve food, only to be besieged by ten Seven-Star Zombies! To prevent these seven Zombies from being drawn to Defensive City, Lin Yi engaged in a fierce battle with the ten Star-Level Combat Power Zombies. After two nights of relentless fighting, Lin Yi finally managed to eliminate all ten Zombies!
However, just as Lin Yi was about to reach the defensive area, he encountered a new wave of Zombie attacks. With no time to explain his recent actions to anyone, he plunged back into battle. In a surprising turn of events, he was injured by the only Six-Star Zombie! At the critical moment, Ouyang Shasha used her Invisibility Ability, enveloping Lin Yi as well. The Six-Star Zombie, having lost its target, reluctantly retreated.
The battle had been intense, leaving nearly everyone injured. Hai frequently employed his Divine Technique to save everyone. Afterward, Lin Yi noticed that Aoling Er and others, who had been stuck at the elite special soldier level, had all broken through to Star-Level Combat Power. Jian and Pachy both reached Four-Star Combat Power as well. To Lin Yi's astonishment, even Flower Cannon had achieved Three-Star combat strength; however, Flower Cannon revealed that she had inadvertently reached Two-Star previously!
Lin Yi sensed that this increase in everyone's combat power was closely related to the Sea God Technique. Yet many others had also improved without Hai using his Divine Technique on them!
As February arrived and spring began to bloom, the group faced their biggest problem: their food supplies had run out! Outside, the Zombies continued their relentless assault, draining Lin Yi and his companions' patience.
On February 14th, Ying Sa, who had nearly recovered, was finally able to venture outside with Lin Yi accompanying her. She even linked her arm through his and rested her head on his shoulder without any resistance from him. Suddenly, a Fragrant Breeze swept in, and Lin Yi felt a pair of soft hands wrap around his neck. In the next moment, Fragrant Jade approached with sweet words!
At that moment, Lin Yi suddenly felt an oppressive force above him. Instinctively looking up into the sky, he was taken aback! Hundreds of dark figures descended from above, with the closest being a Long-Haired Woman clad in tight armor gracefully descending toward the ground.
The woman exuded confidence and power, resembling a queen making her entrance!
