Klinqi City is located at the easternmost edge of Polar Bear. Although the number of attackers is not large, their equipment is substantial. A full ten rounds of five hundred missiles have directly bombarded the resisting zombies, leaving them disoriented.
Entering the city went relatively smoothly. Despite numerous zombies attempting to obstruct their path, under the suppression of Lin Yi and other Star-Level Combat Powers, they quickly fell apart. However, as everyone began to enter the city at an increasing pace, Lin Yi felt a strange sense of unease. The power required for zombies to occupy a city is immense, and the cost is even greater; after all, they do not use firearms on a large scale like humans do.
The recent fall of the entire Apennine Peninsula served as a reminder that zombies are not mere mindless corpses; underestimating them can lead to devastating consequences.
Yet, as they gradually made their way into the city, aside from the scorched earth and shattered limbs left in the wake of artillery fire, Lin Yi and his companions did not encounter anything particularly unusual.
The easternmost section of Klinqi City's Quarantine Wall had been completely demolished. As soon as they entered the city, Commander Raymond ordered the arriving engineers to rapidly repair the wall. Subsequently, the Chemical Defense Unit quickly began cleaning up the area, as it would certainly require long-term garrisoning in the future. Although the zombie virus dies quickly once it leaves a host's body, military operations must account for all possibilities.
Even though Lin Yi and his team were at the forefront, they soon caught a whiff of a pungent chemical odor mixed with a hint of something foul, making them feel nauseous.
"Boss, can we pull out once we take this cursed place?" Witerson II, with his straightforward personality, had clearly established his identity as a mercenary. Generally speaking, he was accustomed to doing his job for pay and moving on. However, there was no one in charge to inform them about what to do next, which felt quite strange.
Lin Yi glanced around but did not see Beatrice or the SIS Director. They had fought together on the right flank earlier, and everything seemed normal then; yet now it appeared that no one was around.
By the time the battle ended, it was already afternoon. The main area of Klinqi City had been completely cleared, with all remnants of zombies incinerated.
It was only then that Yevgeny reappeared beside Lin Yi after having been absent for some time. With an apologetic expression, he said, "I'm sorry, Mr. Lin. I was helping Captain earlier and just now found time to tell you something. Your SIS Director and Commander Beatrice from the Golden Mercenary Corps have already left; however, it seems they had another mission and left in quite a hurry!"
Lin Yi was taken aback at first but then felt an unsettling twitch in his eyelid. Things were definitely not as simple as they seemed. Even if there was an urgent mission requiring their departure, they could have communicated directly with him instead of sending Yevgeny to relay the message after such a long delay! The only explanation was that they wanted to shake him off.
"What did they leave behind?" Lin Yi quickly controlled his emotions to avoid appearing angry.
Yevgeny scratched his nose and replied, "Nothing that I know of; it was quite urgent at that moment so I didn’t ask too much. They might really have had something pressing to attend to."
Yevgeny was lying! With Lin Yi's keen mental control abilities, he noticed a hint of evasion in Yevgeny's eyes; this situation was definitely more complicated than it appeared!
"Alright then, since our mission is nearly complete and we've received our bounty, we should be able to leave now!" Lin Yi felt an urgent need to get away; he sensed he had fallen into a trap and needed to take his team out immediately!
"Well, Mr. Lin," Yevgeny hesitated before continuing, "I also came here because Commander Raymond wanted me to thank you for your assistance and introduce you to several responsible parties." Yevgeny looked somewhat troubled and awkwardly at Lin Yi.
"Oh? We still have a chance, right? I also have a mission at hand, so I ask Mr. Major and Commander Raymond to join me. Once we receive our Contribution Points, we can take on other missions!" Lin Yi felt a sense of unease; he suspected that Sith was hiding something from him. Given Sith's high status, he must have been aware of some troubling situation and had slipped away early.
"Hahaha, it seems that if I hadn't come personally, the renowned Captain Lin wouldn't have graced us with his presence!" Yevgeny's booming laughter echoed before he even spoke.
He seemed to have appeared from over a kilometer away in an instant, now standing among them. The moment Lin Yi heard the sonic boom, he instinctively controlled his muscles to mitigate the destructive force of the laughter. The others, however, were not so fortunate; they swayed unsteadily as if they might faint at any moment.
Sonic Ability! Lin Yi quickly realized that this energy could kill without a trace. If used for an ambush, even he could fall victim in an instant! Fortunately, the newcomer had clearly held back; although everyone felt uncomfortable for a moment, they quickly recovered.
The newcomer stood just over 1.7 meters tall. Though short in stature, his muscles were as solid as steel, making him appear like a combat machine forged from iron.
"Captain!" Yevgeny stood half a head taller than Raymond but clearly dared not show any disrespect in front of him.
"Colonel Raymond!" Lin Yi nodded at Raymond. Although he sensed Raymond's combat strength, it likely did not exceed Three-Star. However, if combined with his Sonic Ability, it would be another story. Lin Yi had always been confident in his Mercenary team's strength but now realized that military Ability users were equally formidable and even more unpredictable.
"I've heard of Captain Lin's reputation for a long time. Now that we meet, we must share a drink together. I have some top-quality vodka that will surely satisfy you!"
"My reputation?" Lin Yi frowned; this was his first encounter with Raymond. How could he know about his reputation? Yet, he sensed sincerity in Raymond's eyes and couldn't believe it was mere flattery.
Raymond seemed to realize he had misspoken and paused for a moment before quickly recovering: "Please join me in my command room; we can talk as we walk!"
Lin Yi understood that Raymond had more to say and decided to follow without further hesitation. Before leaving, he instructed Jian and Pachy to ensure everyone was settled while Witerson II and Jerry followed him, leaving the others to rest.
Raymond deliberately quickened his pace, and Lin Yi naturally kept up with him while the rest trailed two or three meters behind.
"Captain Lin, I've watched your combat videos and know your abilities. This time I'm here representing my country's Special Operations Center to recruit you. The benefits are absolutely top-notch!" Raymond was straightforward and directly expressed his intentions to Lin Yi in a low voice.
Lin Yi was slightly taken aback; he hadn't expected his actions to attract attention and even lead to an invitation for recruitment.
"But you must understand, I am a Mercenary!" Lin Yi meant that he had already joined the Mercenary Alliance and could not join another organization.
Raymond chuckled with an innocent demeanor but spoke with a cunning undertone: "You could always withdraw. We know that your time as a Mercenary has only been these past few months. Moreover, you've been fighting against Zombies, unlike those Mercenaries stained with the blood of their compatriots. This is why we chose you over Beatrice!"
Lin Yi felt a flicker of temptation, but he knew that if he joined this organization, he would ultimately be serving them. The Mercenary Alliance, while also engaged in various activities, offered much more freedom; he could refuse if he didn't want to participate.
"I need to think about it. I still have a large number of members in the Greater Paris Defense Zone, and I need to consult with them!" Lin Yi was unsure when he would next visit the Greater Paris Defense Zone, which effectively served as a polite refusal of Raymond's invitation.
Raymond, likely accustomed to such situations, laughed heartily and said, "Let's have a drink first. Captain Lin can take his time to consider. Our Special Operations Center's chief combat team is eagerly waiting for Captain Lin to lead them!"
Lin Yi smiled back at Raymond, aware that the other man was trying to entice him with the prospect of a position. It was important to note that there were over twenty First-Class Stewards in the entire Mercenary Alliance, not including regional Vice Chairmen and others, so Lin Yi was merely an ordinary figure within the Mercenary Alliance. However, joining the Special Operations Center would likely grant him significant power. Yet Lin Yi understood a survival rule: those who remain low-key tend to live longer.
Soon, they arrived at Raymond's tent, which was already filled with food. The most eye-catching items were several boxes of vodka. Local delicacies were also plentiful, including fine caviar and Borscht with black bread, all prepared and ready. The table was laden with large chunks of beef sizzling with grease, filling the air with a mouthwatering aroma. The Polar Bear people also enjoyed good food; although their cuisine wasn't as diverse as Eastern dishes, it was still quite rich.
"Don't be shy; let's eat and drink to our heart's content!" Raymond boisterously sat down at one spot and casually grabbed a piece of beef, shoving it directly into his mouth and chewing loudly.
Lin Yi swallowed hard; it had been a long time since he had enjoyed such a feast. Since his combat abilities had improved, his food intake had increased significantly, but recently he had been living on compressed rations that had left his mouth sore.
"Alright then, we won't hold back!" Lin Yi casually picked up the largest piece of meat and began tearing into it with an alarming ferocity.
Witerson II and Jerry were surprised that this gathering was primarily about eating; they quickly joined in, chewing heartily. Whenever they choked on their food, they washed it down with delicious Borscht and indulged in some sweet cheese desserts, truly savoring every bite.
Of course, Lin Yi knew this gathering was not just about eating; Raymond had been subtly trying to recruit him all along. However, Lin Yi focused solely on eating and drinking, playing coy until he eventually "passed out" in front of Raymond, no longer able to speak!
