A dark cloud loomed over the city like a heavy weight, a circular Super Stratofortress with a radius of three hundred meters silently hovering dozens of meters above the crowd. The immense pressure it exuded felt like crashing waves, pressing down on everyone's hearts, making it hard for them to breathe.
"Could it be here to rescue us?" Lin Yi glanced back at Bai, who recognized the massive aircraft as well, leaving Lin Yi astonished.
Bai remained silent, merely nodding, but his eyes were fixed intently on the flickering lights of the floating object. As a pinnacle of advanced technology, the Super Stratospheric Fortress was always kept under strict confidentiality. Of the five Transmitters in existence, three were in Washington, with one each in Asia and Europe, highlighting its rarity. It could even be called a treasure of contemporary industrial history.
Suddenly, a hatch opened on the underside of the dark aircraft, and a round black disc descended. Lin Yi squinted and realized it was a middle-aged Caucasian man in his forties. However, Lin Yi sensed a strong smell of blood emanating from him, along with intense energy fluctuations—another combat-type Ability User.
After several seconds, the disc finally landed on the mountaintop, and no one spoke during that time. Once the middle-aged man stepped off the disc, he scanned the crowd with his eyes before furrowing his brow slightly, sensing something was amiss.
"Who is in charge here?" The middle-aged man clearly noticed that everyone was wearing specialized Combat Suits but initially ignored them all, appearing extremely arrogant.
Beatrice was still at the base of the mountain. Lin Yi took a step forward and said, "I am!"
As soon as Lin Yi's words fell, he suddenly felt a blur before his eyes; the middle-aged man had appeared right in front of him from over ten meters away in an instant. Lin Yi hadn’t even noticed when he moved. This indicated that either this man was faster than Lin Yi or possessed an Ability akin to spatial movement. However, such Spatial Abilities only existed in legends, and Lin Yi was reluctant to believe it easily.
"Where is Charlie?" The middle-aged man's voice was icy, giving off an aura that suggested he could kill at any moment if provoked.
Although Lin Yi felt a chill run down his spine, he quickly composed himself and replied, "He's still down below; he should be coming up soon!"
At that moment, Lin Yi was highly alert; he sensed an overwhelming killing intent radiating from the middle-aged man as if he were ready to strike at any moment.
"If anything happens to him, you won't survive either!" After dropping this ominous statement, the middle-aged man vanished again. Just as he disappeared, Lin Yi felt an extreme sense of danger approaching him. Thanks to his heightened focus, he managed to evade whatever threat was aimed at him just in time.
Under Psychic Power's influence, Lin Yi saw that the object was merely a small stone fragment; however, he had just experienced an unsettling feeling! How powerful could this middle-aged man be? Waves of shock surged through Lin Yi's mind.
At that moment, Renee Mayes was also on the top level with Lulu guarding her. However, Lin Yi sensed a formidable power emanating from Lulu that posed an implicit threat even to him. Knowing that Lulu possessed Dark Energy Master bloodlines eased his concerns; after all, having stronger allies meant better chances of survival. The Super Stratofortress continued to hover above them without anyone else descending besides that middle-aged man. Presumably, this fortress had come to rescue them; thus, Lin Yi and his group remained still.
Lin Yi quickly contacted everyone; they were nearly all gathered at the rooftop now. When he finished counting heads, he was left dumbfounded—though his Squad suffered no casualties except for Hein being overly exhausted from using Divine Technique, Bruh's thousand-strong team had dwindled to only about three hundred people left. Most ordinary Mercenaries had perished in Corpseification battles; even several Two-Star Combat Power individuals had fallen! These hundreds were not just numbers but living beings; despite having traversed mountains of corpses and seas of blood before, Lin Yi found it hard to accept this outcome!
"Wait, what about Captain Lin and the others!" Lin Yi had not yet recovered from his shock when a sudden exclamation rang in his ears.
At that moment, Lin Yi noticed that there were two people standing on the disk: one was the middle-aged man, and the other was Charlie!
"Which royal family do you belong to?" Seeing that the Super Stratofortress had personally come to pick up Charlie, Lin Yi naturally believed what Charlie had said.
"I am a descendant of Charlemagne, though we rarely use that surname now," Charlie replied with a slight smile, his demeanor completely different from before. Lin Yi looked at him and almost thought he had mistaken him for someone else.
"Do we really need to worry about their lives?" The middle-aged man frowned, clearly reluctant to save Lin Yi and the others.
"Captain Lin saved me; he is my savior. We cannot treat good people this way. Besides, our 'big guy' can carry them all," Charlie said as he took a few steps toward Lin Yi, his eyes filled with kindness.
"I..." Before the middle-aged man could say much more, he suddenly covered his ears with his hands and nodded repeatedly in agreement.
The middle-aged man stepped closer to Lin Yi and said, "My master invites you all up, but you only have ten minutes. I hope you can gather immediately!"
Seeing that the middle-aged man's expression was not very good, Lin Yi decided not to dwell on it since there was a chance to leave. He began instructing everyone to gather and asked Nicolas to notify Beatrice to hurry up.
Lashar and Roots were still controlling the artillery to fend off the Zombie Army on Highway, while Tina was helping as well. Renesmee and Lulu volunteered to inform them since the vampires were not very fond of modern communication tools.
Three minutes later, Nicolas and Beatrice flew up together. At that moment, Lin Yi realized that Beatrice's Combat Suit not only had flight wings but also provided propulsion for short-distance flight! Such advanced Combat Suits could only be afforded by wealthy teams like the Golden Mercenary Corps. However, this time the Golden Mercenary Corps had suffered significant losses; over a dozen mercenaries led by Beatrice had died, leaving only around five hundred ordinary mercenaries from an original team of three thousand—indicating just how severe their losses were!
Before the ten-minute deadline arrived, a sudden clattering of metal echoed from above the Super Stratofortress. Then, a square alloy plate about two hundred meters wide slowly descended, landing perfectly in the center of the mountaintop. Most people crowded at the edges to make room for this massive steel plate, while the previously mentioned disk fit neatly into its center.
"Get on!" The middle-aged man shouted as he led Charlie onto the alloy plate. Lin Yi and Beatrice did not hesitate either; they followed suit and led their team onto this several hundred square meter space.
With a loud thud, the alloy plate suddenly made a noise, and in the next moment, it began to rise with everyone on it. Although nearly a thousand people stood on this plate, the ascent was remarkably smooth. Of course, it was somewhat slow; it took about thirty seconds to bring everyone into the Cabin.
The cabin was brightly lit, and Lin Yi and the others found it a bit hard to adjust at first, but they quickly organized themselves and regrouped. Although the aircraft was six hundred meters long, having nearly a thousand people packed together made it feel particularly cramped. Fortunately, since the flying fortress was called a fortress, it had more than one level; it boasted three levels in total, with an area of nearly eight hundred thousand square meters—almost like a gigantic estate!
Despite his stern expression, the middle-aged man swiftly arranged accommodations for everyone. However, they were only allowed to stay on the lower two levels and could not enter the third. Although Beatrice was somewhat displeased, she knew better than to act arrogantly on someone else's territory, especially since she sensed that this middle-aged man's combat power far exceeded her own.
Lin Yi stayed in the middle level with his original squad. Before they could even rest, an elderly man with silver hair and a white robe emerged from the top level, and to Lin Yi's surprise, he recognized this old man!
"Archbishop!" Lin Yi exclaimed in disbelief. He couldn't believe the Archbishop was here; wasn't he supposed to be in Rome leading everyone against the zombies?
Augustus smiled faintly at Lin Yi, "Captain Lin, what a coincidence that we meet again."
Hearing Augustus's tone, Lin Yi felt something was off, and a terrifying thought began to form in his mind.
"You might have guessed it already—Rome has fallen. I ultimately didn't have the courage to hold out there. Mr. Aibolon came to rescue me, and I managed to survive with a few remaining warriors," Augustus said, his aura diminishing further as he spoke.
"Rome has actually fallen!" Lin Yi exclaimed in shock. This city had received substantial international aid; logically, it should have been able to hold out!
"We underestimated the zombies. They sent an exceptionally powerful group to attack us, and then the Oceanic Undead swarmed out. Just when we were preparing to resist, that group of zombies had already breached our city gates!" Augustus continued, tears streaming down his face. The expressions of those around him reflected their deep sorrow; clearly, the fall of Rome had dealt them a heavy blow.
Lin Yi sighed deeply; he never expected things would turn out this way.
