With a sudden thud, the Thin Zombie felt as if its body had lightened. Glancing down, it was shocked to see its right arm lying on the ground.
Zombies lack pain perception, and this one might not even have had hearing. However, this Seven-Star Peak level Zombie was nearly indistinguishable from a human, and it quickly realized something was wrong with its body. It had chosen to fight Lin Yi, fully aware of Lin Yi's strength, but it never expected to lose an arm after just a few exchanges.
"Die!" In an instant, the Thin Zombie erupted in rage. Using its Psychic Power, it manipulated the severed arm on the ground to launch a sword strike at Lin Yi from an unusual angle.
Seizing the moment of distraction, Lin Yi closed in swiftly. He would not give his enemy a chance to retaliate; that would be tantamount to suicide!
At that moment, the sword controlled by the Zombie had just taken flight, while Lin Yi moved like lightning, already near the Zombie. The Silver Soul in his hand aimed directly at the Zombie's forehead; he was confident that this strike would cleave its head in two.
The sword blade manipulated by the Thin Zombie could indeed hit Lin Yi, but at the same time, its head would be split in half by Lin Yi's strike! Such a life-or-death gamble might be taken by a mindless Zombie without hesitation, but this thin Zombie possessed intelligence on par with highly intelligent humans. Naturally, it had its own thoughts and did not wish to die so pathetically.
"Block!" The Thin Zombie clearly uttered this word from its throat. In the next moment, the sword tip that was aimed at Lin Yi's chest suddenly flicked sideways and collided with Lin Yi's Silver Soul!
"Clang—" A metallic resonance echoed persistently!
The Thin Zombie had thought that its strike would be enough to deflect Lin Yi's Silver Soul, but it found that the blade merely shifted slightly to the right without being knocked away!
In the next moment, Silver Soul continued its relentless thrust toward the Zombie's head with an aura of either you die or I live. Since awakening its intelligence, when had the Thin Zombie ever faced such danger? Even missile bombardments could be easily evaded. But now, this deadly blade seemed to have a mind of its own as it aimed straight for its forehead!
Desperate! The Thin Zombie gritted its teeth and swung its only intact left hand toward Lin Yi's stabbing blade, attempting to resist Sharp Blade with flesh and blood!
"Thud!" A clear sound of a blade piercing flesh rang out as Silver Soul was momentarily halted by this hand. Thanks to that brief moment of resistance, the Zombie twisted its body at an odd angle to the right.
Although Lin Yi's strike pierced through the Zombie's palm, it did not reach its head; thus, it could be considered a failure!
"Hmph!" Just as the opponent raised its hand to block his blade, Lin Yi realized that his attack would be evaded again! However, he was not one to show mercy against Zombies. With a raised brow and a flick of his wrist, he began to whirl Silver Soul!
"Swish swish!" The blade shimmered with cold light as chunks of dry flesh flew off. This process lasted less than a second before the Thin Zombie's hand was utterly shredded!
"Let's see what you can use to fight me!" Lin Yi's eyes were filled with madness; it had been a long time since he felt such a direct threat of death!
Without a moment's hesitation, Lin Yi swung his knife directly at the opponent's neck. Their speeds were nearly equal, with the Thin Zombie being just a fraction faster. Lin Yi had no choice but to go for a straightforward attack!
The situation for the Thin Zombie was dire; its right arm was completely gone, and its left hand had been crushed to nothing by Lin Yi. So when it saw Lin Yi coming at it without hesitation, it dared not be careless and quickly retreated several steps.
Just as the Thin Zombie was backing away, it suddenly felt a sharp energy coming from behind. It knew that if it couldn't dodge this attack, the result would be getting cleaved in half. At that moment, even if it survived, it would soon become a headless Zombie!
This Zombie was not one to cower; it bent low and suddenly exerted force from its waist, jumping to the left, in the same direction as the incoming sharp energy!
"Swish!" Just as the Thin Zombie leaped less than half a meter away, it felt a force slice through its abdomen, and it had an ominous feeling that it might be split in two.
The Thin Zombie's vitality was not affected in the slightest. Before it even hit the ground, it turned to look at its left side where its waist met its abdomen! Upon seeing this, even someone accustomed to gruesome sights like the Thin Zombie was taken aback; that force had nearly severed one-third of its waist, and dark liquid was oozing from the wound!
"Boom!" Just as the Thin Zombie took in this sight, it landed on the ground. However, due to the violent twisting of its waist moments earlier, immense pressure built up. As the Zombie landed, chunks of rotting intestines were forced out of its split abdomen, along with some slimy black masses that could have been any of its internal organs!
"Roar—" In just these few seconds, the Thin Zombie had almost lost all fighting capability and let out a furious roar.
In the next moment, the robe wrapped around the Zombie billowed as if caught by an invisible wind, forming a round shape! At that point, the hood covering its head fell away, revealing a shriveled skull. Sparse strands of hair adorned this head, with deep-set eye sockets and prominent cheekbones; its face was almost entirely covered by decaying skin!
Once the robe billowed up, it quickly fell away from the Zombie's frail body and wrapped around its wound to stop the black liquid still oozing from the gash. Although Zombies did not fear pain, losing too many organs would affect their strength.
Lin Yi glanced at Beatrice, who had just stabbed the Thin Zombie from behind, and nodded. The next moment, both seemed to have reached an unspoken agreement and charged toward the emaciated Zombie!
"Save your lives! I'll come back for you next time!" Just as Lin Yi and Beatrice moved forward, the Thin Zombie's speed surged to its peak.
Lin Yi and Beatrice's attacks missed entirely, and surprise flickered in their eyes simultaneously. Although this Zombie had reached Seven-Star Peak, it was only slightly stronger than them—how could it move so fast!
"The greatest advantage of a Zombie is that unless its head is severed, injuring any other part poses no threat to its life or speed!" Lin Yi felt a hint of despair; in an instant, that Zombie had vanished from sight. But he understood there was nothing he could do about it; after all, Zombies were practically immortal. If it were an ordinary person suffering such severe injuries, they would have bled out long ago!
"Since the big ones have escaped, let's kill all of these!" Beatrice was also consumed by a violent rage, her speed reaching its peak. The ordinary Giant Zombies were no match for her, and in the blink of an eye, she had slain several of them.
Lin Yi dared not waste a moment and rejoined the battle. With such a disparity in combat power, the Zombies were merely fodder for slaughter. In just a few minutes, over a thousand Zombies were wiped out by this group of dozens! Not a single Giant Zombie managed to breach the death line they had formed to crawl up the mountainside.
"Boss! Many of our brothers have been infected by the Undead Bird's Zombie Virus!" Before Lin Yi could catch his breath, his earpiece crackled with Witerson II's urgent voice.
Although there were many skilled fighters from both Mercenary groups, most were ordinary people who had not reached Star-Level Combat Power, and there were even quite a few regular citizens who had followed them in their escape.
"I'll head up first; you keep holding the line down here, Beatrice!" Lin Yi called out to Nicolas. While the situation below had stabilized somewhat, numerous Zombies continued to swarm in from both sides of the highway. If they couldn't hold their ground, those on the mountain would face attacks from both sides.
Beatrice waved at Lin Yi, signaling that it was fine. Lin Yi forced a smile and took a moment to steady his chaotic breath.
With a loud thud, Nicolas landed heavily on the ground a minute later. Without hesitation, Lin Yi raised his arm, and Nicolas lifted him up as they surged toward the mountaintop.
Within seconds, Nicolas brought Lin Yi to the lowest floor, where the sounds of battle echoed loudly!
The threat posed by thousands of Undead Birds had thrown both Mercenary groups into chaos. As soon as Lin Yi's heels touched the ground, he transformed into a streak of light and dashed into the stone chamber.
Outside, only shouts could be heard; however, the scene inside was even more shocking. The floor was littered with chunks of flesh—some hacked apart or charred Undead Birds. Most of the people inside had already undergone Corpseification and were now desperately attacking their former companions. Originally, each stone chamber housed hundreds of people; Lin Yi estimated that about a hundred remained in this chamber alone. Yet two-thirds of them were now Zombies, while the remaining individuals fought back with whatever weapons they could find in a last-ditch effort!
