The sound of cannon fire echoed from both sides of the mountain peak, startling the zombies that had just gathered. In an instant, the powerful explosion transformed many of the formidable zombies into mere piles of flesh. The first round of bombardment had decimated those zombies that attempted to flank from both sides of the highway.
Although Renesmee's attack was decisive, a considerable number of zombies had already crossed the line of fire. The artillery was positioned too high, and the zombies were not far away, making the shooting angle extremely challenging. Despite having forty rows of artillery installed in the stone chamber, each equipped with ten grenade launchers, they were still ineffective against the zombies that were nearing the base of the mountain.
"Those are Giant Zombies!" Beatrice exclaimed, her keen eyesight identifying that those who had crossed the line were indeed Giant Zombies.
Unintentionally overhearing, Lin Yi pondered. Many of these zombies possessed intelligence; their combat capabilities were significant. If they launched a strong assault, their losses would be considerable. However, if they merely surrounded without attacking, it wouldn't be long before they starved. Therefore, upon hearing Beatrice mention that they were Giant Zombies, Lin Yi found it even more puzzling—what could possibly drive them to attack so desperately?
"Renee, is there something special about this mountain? Or is there something that zombies particularly like?" Lin Yi turned to ask Renesmee, curious about what could motivate these zombies to risk their lives in such an attack.
"Something zombies like? Don't they just crave flesh and blood? The only thing here that could drive them crazy would be us few thousand living people," Renesmee replied after a moment's pause.
"That’s unnecessary; among them are Intelligent Zombies controlling the ordinary ones. They wouldn’t attack us recklessly!" Beatrice interjected, her gaze fixed on the sky as if waiting for something.
Lin Yi had refrained from asking Beatrice whether there was a chance for them to survive. After all, there were thousands of people here; even if someone came to rescue them, many would inevitably be left behind. Lin Yi knew he wouldn’t be abandoned due to his abilities, but who could predict what would happen in the future?
"If there’s nothing they desire, then it must be something they fear!" Lin Yi reasoned. Their current goal was to eliminate the zombies because they instilled fear in him; similarly, zombies must also have things they feared!
"What could it be? Something related to the Counter Zombie Virus?" Renesmee turned her head, her previously murderous expression now replaced with curiosity as she looked at Lin Yi.
"Perhaps, but we haven’t conducted any research on that here; it doesn’t seem like we have anything related to a Counter Zombie Virus," Lin Yi replied uncertainly. The behavior of these zombies was indeed too unusual.
Suddenly, a flash of insight struck Lin Yi's mind. If there was something that countered the Zombie Virus effectively, it would be the Sea God Technique! However, while powerful, using it came at a great cost; the more potent the effect, the fewer times she could use it. If there were several strong zombies present, even that technique might not suffice against them. Or perhaps Renesmee? If she used her Frozen Domain once, she could potentially freeze tens of thousands of zombies—provided they were gathered together. But Lin Yi believed there were many Super Experts among the zombies who could easily deal with Renesmee. The only thing that could instill fear in even the strongest zombie would be a threat they couldn’t escape from; this would explain their behavior.
Lin Yi looked at Renesmee and asked with a sudden jolt in his eyelids, "What does your Holy Clan fear?"
"Sunlight!" Renesmee's eyes sparkled, as if she wanted to respond to the question.
"And what else?" Lin Yi knew that while vampires feared sunlight, it wasn't necessarily a lethal threat to them.
"What do you want?" Renesmee raised an eyebrow, her gaze sharp. This was related to the greatest concern of their kind, and she wouldn't easily divulge information to others.
"Nothing much, just that zombies also need blood to enhance their strength. It seems you need it to sustain your lives too, so I was just asking." After all, on someone else's territory, Lin Yi didn't dare to be too casual. He understood that vampires would become powerless under sunlight and could not survive without blood. Although zombies weren't afraid of sunlight, they would instantly turn into a wisp of black mist when faced with the milky light emitted by the Sea God Technique.
Thinking of this, Lin Yi suddenly shouted, "I know the reason! I know the reason!"
"What do you know?" Beatrice was startled by Lin Yi's outburst. The guards in the distance thought someone had been stunned by a zombie!
Before Lin Yi could say anything further, a shadow suddenly flew out from the cliff—it was Nicolas!
"Ice Sister, they're attacking from below!" Nicolas gasped for breath.
"This group of zombies really won't give up until they achieve their goal!" Renesmee clearly valued their survival within the stone fortress created by the mountains. She didn't want anything to happen to it.
"However, those guarding the lowest stone chamber have already started shooting, but there are mostly giant zombies on the other side. It won't be long before they climb up!" Nicolas wiped the sweat from his forehead. Although Renesmee quickly arranged various defenses, dealing with these giant zombies seemed beyond their capabilities.
"Let's go lend a hand!" Beatrice's eyes flashed with determination. If the zombies were going to force them into a corner, he wouldn't hold back against them.
At that moment, a flurry of flapping sounds suddenly echoed in the air. The next second, a sharp cry quickly approached from afar!
"Why are there so many birds at this hour?" Beatrice frowned as he spotted at least thousands of birds flying aggressively toward them from the sky.
"This damn thing is an Undead Bird!" Lin Yi exclaimed, startled as he realized the situation. At that moment, hundreds of people had gathered at the mountaintop, making them easy targets for the Undead Birds.
"Quick! Get into the stone chamber!" Lin Yi shouted. Many members of his Mercenary group were still outside, but it was likely too late for a rescue.
"Seal all the stone chambers!" Renesmee ordered immediately upon seeing Lin Yi's intense reaction. These Undead Birds were not like Zombies; they were agile and could easily slip into the rooms.
Most of the people on the mountaintop had never seen an Undead Bird before, but the overwhelming stench of decay made it clear that something was wrong. However, there was only one entrance to the mountaintop, and it was narrow enough for only five people to go down side by side. At that moment, the hundreds of people were scattered around the summit, with most of them some distance away from the entrance.
Suddenly, a howl that sounded almost wolf-like echoed through the air. The Undead Birds seemed to receive some kind of command and instantly accelerated toward the crowd.
"Save them!" Lin Yi shouted, drawing his Silver Soul and launching it toward the swarm of Undead Birds.
With a series of sickening thuds, several Undead Birds that swooped down first were instantly shredded by Silver Soul, their decayed feathers scattering across the ground.
"Caw caw caw!" A cacophony of harsh, raspy cries erupted as thousands of Undead Birds scattered and dove toward the people on the mountaintop. Even with Lin Yi's extraordinary abilities, it was difficult to fend off the dispersed Undead Birds.
"Tap tap!"
"Zing zing!" In an instant, various gunfire erupted, filling the dark sky with angry flashes and blood-soaked Laser Beams.
"Ah—my eyes!" Suddenly, a burly man dropped his weapon and stumbled toward the edge of the cliff while covering his face.
"Heart!" Lin Yi shouted as he prepared to rush over to save the man when an Undead Bird collided with him. The man lost his footing while trying to dodge and fell directly off the cliff.
"Get into the stone chamber quickly!" Beatrice yelled as she ran toward the center of the mountaintop.
At that moment, Lin Yi saw Beatrice throw a silver-white orb into the air, about the size of a baby's fist. The next instant, a miraculous scene unfolded; the orb, which should have fallen, suddenly hovered in mid-air. Just as Lin Yi was wondering what this object was, the orb flashed with electricity and transformed into a massive electric net. After a powerful surge of current passed through, calmness returned, but Lin Yi knew that the orb continued to release electricity.
"Zzap!" As if to confirm Lin Yi's suspicions, two Undead Birds that had rushed in were instantly electrocuted, their feathers exploding outward. Then, he watched as those two Undead Birds, now lifeless, slowly slid down through the invisible electric net.
"What is this?" Lin Yi asked in astonishment, momentarily forgetting about the approaching Undead Birds around him.
"Lin Steward, this is an Electric Net Orb. Just squeeze it hard and throw it; it can maintain a twenty-square-meter electric net for three minutes!" Beatrice casually tossed an Electric Net Orb to Lin Yi.
Electric Net Orb? This truly is a great item! Lin Yi caught the Electric Net Orb and squeezed it tightly. He immediately felt a terrifying current about to surge from this unassuming ball, causing him to instinctively throw the Electric Net Orb above his head.
A tingling sensation coursed through Lin Yi's body; he knew it was because he stood beneath the powerful electric net. Meanwhile, the Undead Birds seemed oblivious to the power of this net. Seeing Lin Yi frozen in place, they excitedly screeched and dove toward him.
"Zzap! Zzap! Zzap!" A series of strange sounds echoed in Lin Yi's ears as those attacking Undead Birds were instantly rendered lifeless by the overwhelming current.
In just a few seconds, Beatrice had thrown five Electric Net Orbs in succession, effectively halting the onslaught of the Undead Birds.
At that moment, it seemed as if the Undead Birds received some kind of command and collectively charged toward the base of the mountain!
"This is bad! There are still brothers outside holding off the Zombies at the base!" Lin Yi shouted. He knew Pachy and his team were responsible for securing the lower levels.
