“Captain, something's wrong. It seems the Zombies have already attacked the Quarantine Wall!” Ero's next words fell like a bucket of cold water on each of their hearts.
They were merely characters, and to those Zombies, they were just an accident. The true target was the Milan Defense Zone, and they had been preparing for this for a long time. The previous battles seemed to be at a stalemate, but in reality, these Zombies had been getting ready for the next assault. Although this planet was vast, it appeared that humanity's living space was continuously shrinking.
“Where did these Zombies come from?” Lulu seemed to be the most relaxed among them; after all, she was practically defenseless. If it weren't for Tony, she wouldn't even be part of the Mercenary group.
“Where did they come from? They just popped up from the ground!” Lin Yi replied somewhat impatiently, throwing out a random remark.
“Popped up from underground? Hmm, that could be possible,” Lulu nodded thoughtfully, seemingly agreeing with Lin Yi's “nonsense.”
Popped up from underground? Lin Yi didn't even believe it himself, but then a flash of insight struck him. If they didn't come from underground, where else could they have emerged? These Zombies had clearly been preparing for a long time to attack the Milan Defense Zone. However, given the artillery coverage of the Milan Defense Zone, it was nearly impossible for these Zombies to break in! After all, the manufacturing process for short-range missiles was already quite mature, and mass production wasn't difficult.
Those Zombies couldn't have just materialized out of thin air; the only possibility left was that they had laboriously tunneled underground to approach the Quarantine Wall. Previously, Lin Yi and his team had encountered several special Zombies on their way, which must also be related to the tunnels. At that time, they had already been active nearby, likely responsible for tunnel operations! “Boss, we're about to enter grenade launcher range!” Akin, who was driving, spoke up to remind Lin Yi to make a decision soon.
Grenade launchers weren't like missiles; their targets were smaller and fewer in number. If they rushed in recklessly and relied solely on laser beam coverage for defense, passing through this fire zone would be nearly impossible!
“Retreat! Boss, no matter how powerful these Zombies are, we still have a chance to break through. But against those Artillery units, we might face total annihilation!” Jerry knew what Lin Yi was thinking and spoke up to remind him.
Yes! Retreat! Hearing Jerry's words sparked hope in Lin Yi's mind! Now that missiles had already covered their rear area and the number of Zombie Beasts had significantly decreased, charging forward might not be an issue after all.
“Those Zombies must be controlled by Intelligent Zombies. If we can capture one of them, we might just be saved!” Jerry said, seeing Lin Yi's expression brighten.
The roaring outside continued, and the missiles flying in had all been shot down by the people outside. At this moment, the first wave of missiles had already covered several areas, and there wouldn’t be any new missiles coming in for a while. Lin Yi briefed everyone on the current situation and decided to temporarily retreat to avoid the gunfire. Although retreating didn’t guarantee survival, advancing was almost certain death.
Once everyone agreed, the entire convoy began to change formation. Lin Yi's command vehicle moved to the back of the original convoy, but after the turn, he still found himself at the front of the line.
The convoy sped forward, but then something strange happened. The Zombie Beasts that had been attacking them frantically were now almost wiped out by the missiles, yet they seemed to ignore the convoy entirely and passed right by! Since they weren’t attacking, Lin Yi saved himself a lot of trouble and took the opportunity to recover his Psychic Power.
The convoy was moving at full speed, and within ten minutes, they reached what used to be Death Zone 6. However, compared to half an hour ago when they retreated, it had turned into a pile of ruins.
Looking at the scorched earth before him, Lin Yi clenched his fists, his eyes filled with a terrifying expression. All their hard work had turned to ashes in an instant; anyone would feel disheartened. But who was truly responsible for this disaster? Was it just the Zombies?
“Lin Yi, should we move forward?” Pachy asked as he approached Lin Yi. A little further ahead lay the area controlled by Zombies. Although a large number of Zombies were attacking the Milan Defense Zone, many more were still lurking around outside.
Lin Yi didn’t respond; he simply instructed Pachy to deploy a few drones for reconnaissance. However, it soon became clear that things weren’t so simple. While there weren’t many Zombies on the outer perimeter, their organized formation indicated that these Zombies weren’t just out for a stroll.
The stars were hidden from view in the sky; only distant flashes of artillery fire and explosions that seemed capable of shaking the ground could be seen and heard. Lin Yi’s mind raced as he needed to devise a foolproof plan to ensure everyone’s survival.
The best solution right now would be for them to hold out until the defenders at Milan Defense Zone eliminated all the Zombies. After that, they could return inside the Defense Zone. However, since this time the Zombies were launching a large-scale attack, they must have been well-prepared. It was possible that not only would Milan Defense Zone fail to eliminate this batch of Zombies, but it could also be breached by them!
At that moment, Lin Yi suddenly felt a tremor beneath his feet but quickly understood what was happening. The Zombies were indeed using underground tunnels for troop movements; however, he had no idea how they managed to dig tunnels spanning dozens of kilometers.
Everyone else felt the tremor too and worried that these Zombies might suddenly emerge from below to attack them. However, Lin Yi wasn’t particularly afraid of these Zombies; as long as thousands of them didn’t gather instantly, a mass of Zombies would truly be walking to their deaths against his current strength!
Just then, he heard a beep in his ear followed by a familiar voice: “Lin Steward, please provide support for the City Defense Force; this Zombie attack is too fierce.”
Lin Yi snorted coldly and replied with an unfriendly tone: “Bruh Butler, are you so sure I won’t die?” He couldn’t understand how Bruh could so casually ask him for support for the City Defense Force when it was unclear who had abandoned whom first!
“Hahaha! My Third Child wouldn’t have chosen someone who dies so easily!” Bruh referred to Lin Yi’s position in the Mercenary Alliance while also hinting at their personal relationship—an implication that was unmistakable.
"Do you know why the Zombies suddenly attacked beneath the Quarantine Wall?" Lin Yi understood that this was a moment of life and death; he needed sufficient conditions to help the City Defense Force.
"I just checked the geological Satellite data from multiple sources and discovered that they have dug dozens of tunnels over ten meters deep underground. Moreover, there are large troop formations inside these tunnels, which means the number of Zombies currently besieging the defense area has likely reached hundreds of thousands, including a significant number of Giant Zombies. Because of this, we hope you can attack them from behind to relieve pressure in other areas," Bruh explained succinctly, hoping Lin Yi would lend a hand.
Hearing Bruh's explanation, Lin Yi felt a shiver run down his spine. When was the last time he faced hundreds of thousands? It seemed like ages ago. How many lives were lost that time? Perhaps even now, it would be impossible to accurately tally the casualties!
"Our mere thousand-person team would be walking to their deaths!" If there were a thousand Giant Zombies among that Zombie Army, most of them would likely perish.

The convoy turned once more, but this time it carried an air of desolation because they were heading toward what seemed like a dead end. However, Lin Yi refused to resign himself to fate; his goal was to protect everyone around him.
Along the way, Zombie Beasts were scarce, and those that did attack them were almost nonexistent. It seemed those Zombie Beasts were solely focused on trying to reach the Quarantine Wall through the tunnels and then break through the city wall in one fell swoop.
Ten minutes later, when Lin Yi finally saw the scene before him, he immediately regretted coming back. Although they were less than five kilometers from the defense area, that short distance felt like an insurmountable chasm.
