In the battle between humans and Zombies, countless lives would be lost, even more than in any historical conflict. Yet, no one was willing to die easily, and Lin Yi was no exception. When he realized that death awaited him in just ten seconds, an unprecedented desire to survive surged within him.
Lin Yi did not want to die; his teammates did not want to die either. Everyone should live!
"Ero! Monitor the launch of the Missile!" The power of the Missile was indeed formidable, but it couldn't cover such a vast area instantly.
Ero closed his eyes, his ears trembling oddly as beads of sweat dripped from his forehead onto the ground. After a few seconds, Ero opened his eyes with a look of joy and said, "Captain, they are launching in segments. The first wave of Missiles will hit and destroy Death City numbers 1 to 15! In about thirty seconds, another wave will cover the next fifteen Cities of Death!"
Just as he finished speaking, ten seconds had already passed. Lin Yi and his team had been away from City of Death No. 6 for some time. Although the convoy wasn't moving quickly, they would reach the Quarantine Wall in just fifteen minutes, at which point they could charge through!
"Maintain maximum speed! Everyone hold nothing back; attack the Zombie Beasts with all your might!" Lin Yi relayed his command through the earpiece and then climbed from the window onto the roof of the vehicle. The convoy stretched nearly a kilometer long, and maintaining such high-speed proximity was a significant test of the vehicles' performance; one misstep could lead to a chain collision!
The Zombie Beasts behind couldn't keep up, but those attacking from both sides kept coming relentlessly! Lin Yi's mind began to race; these Zombie Beasts might have been lying in wait nearby, just waiting for an opportunity to ensnare them all!
"Roar!" The deafening roar surged from all directions like waves crashing together. Lin Yi steadied himself; his Laser Gun was never idle. With his Psychic Power growing stronger, his shooting accuracy approached perfection, creating thumb-sized charred holes in the heads of each Zombie Beast.
At that moment, Ero's voice suddenly rang in Lin Yi's ear: "Not good, Captain! They’ve launched their second wave of Missiles! It seems all launches have been moved up!"
Hearing Ero's voice sent a chill down Lin Yi's spine as if ice had been pressed against it. Their time was running out; perhaps the next wave of Missiles was already in launch mode.
"Everyone stay calm! First, eliminate the surrounding Zombie Beasts; I have a plan!" What plan did Lin Yi have? The only thing he could do was stabilize everyone's emotions and prevent them from collectively breaking down.
Silence fell for a moment before a series of urgent beeping sounds echoed in Lin Yi's earpiece. Then a cold female voice announced: "Warning: 'Blazing' Missile will arrive here in fifteen seconds!"
Fifteen seconds! Lin Yi's heart sank; he had no confidence in dealing with the incoming Missiles. At that moment, the noise around him grew louder as panic began to spread among many. Everyone was prepared to die at the hands of Zombies but not ready to perish by their own Missile fire.
"Target approaching! Three 'Flame' Missiles will reach in ten seconds!" The alarm blared again, faithfully reminding Lin Yi.
"Everyone with Two-Star Combat Power, get up here now!" Lin Yi shouted. An idea suddenly struck him; while it might not guarantee success, it was their only hope.
The individuals with Two-Star Combat Power reacted swiftly. Just as Lin Yi finished speaking, everyone had already rushed to the top of the vehicle, waiting for his command.
"Gather around! We will destroy the Missiles with Laser Beams!" Lin Yi ordered instantly, and more than a dozen Two-Star Combat Power Mercenaries quickly surrounded him.
"Link up!" Lin Yi issued another strange command, but no one hesitated; they all complied.
In the next moment, Lin Yi's expression changed as his Psychic Power spread out, enveloping the group of people around him.
"Do not resist; follow my instructions!" A commanding voice echoed in their minds, distant yet seemingly close at hand.
"Five-second warning!" The alarm sounded again.
Lin Yi's mental energy surged toward the distant flaming projectiles. Then he commanded, "Raise your weapons! Sixty-eight-degree angle, twelve o'clock direction, fire!"
As soon as Lin Yi's words fell, the Mercenaries moved in perfect unison. In the next instant, beams of laser light shot toward an incoming Missile, striking one directly!
"Boom!" A tremendous explosion erupted as the Missile was detonated mid-air by the Laser Beam. The massive debris from the explosion caused another nearby Missile to ignite as well.
A powerful shockwave swept through the metallic fragments, hurtling them toward the convoy. Lin Yi's forehead throbbed with veins bulging; ignoring the pain, he used his Psychic Power to shield the convoy from above!
At that moment, Lin Yi suddenly felt a tearing sensation in his mind as a tremendous force broke through the defensive net formed by his Psychic Power!
"Oh no! There's still one Missile that hasn't exploded!" Lin Yi's mind felt like it was being pierced by countless sharp steel needles, a pain so intense he could hardly bear it. But the Missile was now just within reach; if he didn't act, at least half of the people in the convoy would be turned to ashes by the "Flame."
"Ah!" Lin Yi shouted, channeling the last remnants of his nearly exhausted Psychic Power into the Missile hovering above him.
The immense force of the pull tormented every nerve in Lin Yi's body, causing him to tremble all over, his eyes bloodshot and on the verge of bursting.
At that moment, it seemed the propulsion system of the Missile was affected; it abruptly slowed down and eerily floated fifty meters in front of the convoy!
In the next instant, Lin Yi waved his hands as if he were lifting an object weighing a thousand pounds. The Missile obeyed his command and flew off to one side.
Fifty meters was merely a blink of an eye, and the Missile zipped past the convoy.
"Whoo—" Lin Yi let out a long breath, then collapsed to the ground with a thud. Sweat drenched his hair, and his forehead drooped weakly over a lock of bangs. He looked as though he had just undergone an intense workout, his face pale as a ghost.
The dozen or so Mercenaries were stunned by Lin Yi's almost miraculous ability, but they quickly realized they had escaped from the clutches of death!
Before they could cheer, Lin Yi had already fallen. Two Mercenaries helped him into the command vehicle! At this moment, they were still at least ten minutes away from the city wall, and in those ten minutes, how many more Missiles would they face? No one dared to say.
"All personnel above Star Level to the roof! As long as our reaction speed is fast enough, we can shoot down all these Missiles!" Lin Yi licked his cracked lips and said weakly.
While the speed of the Missiles was indeed fast, it couldn't match that of a Laser Beam. Lin Yi envisioned over a hundred Laser Beams targeting the Missiles, believing they could defend against such an attack. However, human reaction speed would ultimately never match that of machines, so Lin Yi couldn't guarantee this method would work!
"All commands will follow the Captain's orders!" A voice came through Lin Yi's earpiece, and he smiled with some relief. Everyone believed in him like this; it was a kind of honor!
"Fifteen seconds until the Missile arrives!" The alarm sounded again, and Lin Yi weakly waved his hand.
In the critical moment of life and death, everyone rushed to the top of the vehicle without hesitation. This time, without Lin Yi's Psychic Power to assist them, capturing the trajectory of the Missile became a daunting task. Fortunately, Ero was there; although they couldn't prepare to track the Missile's path, at least Ero could inform them whether the next Missile had been launched.
Over a hundred Mercenaries gathered on the rooftops of several vehicles ahead, forming a laser interception network nearly ten times larger than the one Lin Yi had created earlier. Even without Lin Yi's Psychic Power for tracking, their aim wouldn't be too far off.
"Prepare! Fire!" Lin Yi shouted as he watched the Missile approaching on the display screen.
Hundreds of crimson Laser Beams shot into the sky, but they didn't fire just once; they unleashed a continuous barrage! Within five seconds, three explosions echoed through the air!
"We hit it!" Cheers erupted from both inside and outside the vehicle as they drew closer to survival.
"Keep going!" A hint of relief appeared on Lin Yi's face. Each time they dodged a Missile attack, the interval before the next Missile arrived would be just a few seconds longer, giving them more time to prepare.
"Roar!" It seemed that their cheers had provoked the Zombie Beasts outside, which responded with furious roars.
The number of Zombie Beasts around had decreased somewhat, but those directly ahead remained numerous. At this moment, Lin Yi's Psychic Power had recovered slightly. Ignoring his still throbbing headache, he released what little Psychic Power he had left to explore his surroundings. During this exploration, he discovered something strange: the reason there were fewer Zombie Beasts was that they had stopped attacking the convoy and were moving toward the Quarantine Wall instead!
Their true objective was to attack the Milan Defense Zone! The realization struck Lin Yi like a bolt of lightning, causing him to leap up from his seat in shock!
Before anyone noticed Lin Yi's unusual behavior, Ero suddenly shouted, "Not good! They've realized something is wrong and are adjusting their Missile attack strategy!"
