After two days, Lin Yi and his team had expanded their base to a radius of three miles. Concerned about potential dangers at night, Lin Yi accelerated their clearing efforts significantly compared to the daytime. At this rate, they could complete the task of clearing the city in just over ten days.
However, the number of Zombies they encountered was dwindling, and Lin Yi was not optimistic that the Zombies were retreating. If they had truly begun to think, they were likely planning a counterattack. Fortunately, this area was under heavy fire coverage, making it impossible for large groups of Zombies to launch an attack.
As these thoughts swirled in his mind, Lin Yi grew increasingly agitated and even began to resent Bruh for putting him in this predicament. But what if he went to Paris? Surely, he wouldn't be idle there either!
While things were progressing smoothly, manpower was becoming increasingly scarce. Lin Yi had already withdrawn all sniper positions within a mile of the city hall, yet even so, there were still two hundred people organizing defenses on the new floors. At this rate, they would only be able to hold the outer perimeter of the city.
Although Bruh's group was just the first batch, they had not provided a clear timeline for support, causing Lin Yi to feel anxious.
After ten days, their defensive perimeter had expanded to sixteen miles. Half of their personnel were needed to secure their base, leaving only half to continue pushing forward. Lin Yi had been trying to contact Bruh, hoping for a definitive plan since their numbers were critically low. Many had been injured or killed while resisting the Zombies. Although Bruh had sent them a batch of Serum, there were only fifty vials available, and they were nearly depleted.
On the eleventh day in Death City No. 6, Lin Yi stood alone at City Hall, scanning the surroundings but finding nothing unusual. Could it be that the Zombies really had no intention of making a move? The satellite footage over the past few days indicated that the number of Zombies in Death City No. 6 was decreasing, which explained why Lin Yi's team was still advancing despite their dwindling numbers.
Suddenly, a piercing scream shattered the silence from within the convoy. Lin Yi's heart raced as he leaped from the rooftop. Thoughts raced through his mind—had the Zombies breached their defenses?
A few seconds later, he spotted Aoling Er standing on the command vehicle with tears in her eyes, clearly frightened.
"Reiko, what's going on?" Lin Yi asked urgently as Aoling Er was the only one in the vehicle; most others were busy tending to those who had been injured.
"There are so many bugs!" Aoling Er stammered in fear, pointing at swarms of insects crawling around like headless flies.
Lin Yi looked down at the mass of insects emerging from a crack in the ground. They must have made their home here long before the convoy arrived and disturbed their habitat.
"You’re not afraid of Zombies but scared of this?" Lin Yi stepped forward and concentrated his Psychic Power, enveloping the swarm of insects into a sphere before hurling them away forcefully.
"Woo woo woo..." Perhaps relieved by Lin Yi's action in clearing away the bugs, Aoling Er suddenly threw herself onto him and began to cry. The fragrance of youth enveloped him as he gently patted her shoulder like an older brother comforting her.
"Cough cough cough!" Suddenly, a coughing sound interrupted them. Startled, Lin Yi turned around to see Witerson II standing beside him with an expression of surprise.
Lin Yi's face flushed red; he quickly changed the subject. "Witerson II, how is your injury?"
"Miss Huang has been using Divine Technique to treat me; it works wonders! I'm completely healed!" Witerson II replied cheerfully. The healing sessions from Miss Huang had certainly improved since she wasn't exerting herself as much as when she first pulled Witerson II back from death's door.
"Indeed, Hai's strength is growing stronger. It seems that in no time, she will be able to stand shoulder to shoulder with those Diviners from Rome!" Seeing her team member becoming more powerful, Lin Yi couldn't help but feel happy. Although the combat power of the Yellow Sea wasn't the strongest, her contributions were undeniable. In fact, as long as someone was gravely injured but still alive, Hai could fully exert her abilities to bring them back to life.
"By the way, boss, I just went to City Hall looking for you. Mr. Bruh is sending a mechanized force of two thousand men over tonight. After that, we can return and rest!"
"That's good. Mr. Bruh has really overestimated our thousand-man team; how could we possibly handle everything in such a large area with just a thousand people?" Lin Yi chuckled. He had been tense for days, especially worried about a potential zombie ambush. With his thousand men so spread out, they would surely be picked off one by one. Although he wanted to do more, ensuring everyone's safety was his top priority.
Lin Yi quickly relayed the news to everyone. Except for the outermost surveillance personnel, everyone else retreated to the convoy, preparing for withdrawal.
Around eight o'clock that evening, Bruh sent a message informing Lin Yi that the troops had set out and would arrive at Lin Yi's location in forty minutes.
Upon receiving this news, Lin Yi felt a wave of relief wash over him. He lay down on the bed in the command vehicle, waiting for the handover of tasks.
Suddenly, a red light flashed in Lin Yi's eyes, and in the next moment, a piercing alarm blared throughout the command vehicle!
"Alert! Dangerous objects approaching!" The calm voice of the AI still maintained its composure, but upon hearing this news, Lin Yi jumped off the bed and rushed outside.
"What’s going on?" There wouldn't be such an urgent alarm without a large-scale attack. But how could there be a major assault now when they hadn't received any warnings until just now?
"I don't know; things don't look good. The brothers on the outer perimeter seem confused as well!" Witerson II ran out of the vehicle with a weary expression. He felt guilty for not being able to fight on the front lines these days and had taken on most of the surveillance duties.
"All personnel assemble and prepare for battle!" Lin Yi used his Psychic Power to project his voice across the area.
Half a minute later, Aoling Er approached Lin Yi with an unusual expression and trembled as she spoke: "A large number of monsters have appeared outside; we..."
Aoling Er was also responsible for monitoring and was naturally familiar with the situation in the distance. Seeing Aoling Er's expression, Lin Yi calmly asked, "How many zombies?" Although the alarm had sounded, Lin Yi wasn't afraid; there couldn't be more than a thousand zombies here!
"N-no, it's not zombies; it's a massive group of beasts—various kinds!" Aoling Er's face turned pale; what she had just seen on the monitor was truly unforgettable.
"Beasts?" Lin Yi's mind buzzed as he suddenly recalled encountering a horde of Zombie Beasts in Ethiopia before—far beyond ordinary zombies' power!
Lin Yi activated the virtual projector on his wrist and opened the surveillance interface. Instantly, a chilling sensation washed over him as footage from night vision showed countless beasts charging toward their camp. However, these beasts were more accurately described as livestock—livestock that had undergone Corpseification!
"Pachy, Flower Cannon, Bai! Quickly drive out and bring back our Brothers defending the perimeter! We need to retreat immediately!" After seeing just one screen filled with Zombie Beasts roaring and crowding together, Lin Yi realized they were densely packed with various livestock. Judging by their Corpseification state, it seemed they had just recently transformed; otherwise, they wouldn't still resemble their original forms so closely.
A sharp screech echoed through the air as a Transport Vehicle emerged from the convoy, heading towards the outskirts. Lin Yi chased after it, only to discover that it was Jian! Truly a person of swift action, his reaction speed was even faster than Pachy's.
"All snipers, please be advised, a vehicle is on its way to pick you up. Prepare for evacuation!" Lin Yi issued another command. The Undead Livestock were no more than five kilometers from their outer defense point. This distance was merely a short stretch for the crazed livestock after Corpseification.
At this moment, the remaining personnel had gathered. Lin Yi instructed everyone to board the vehicles and get ready! However, since it was a Transport Vehicle, its durability was not very strong. Lin Yi planned to use grenades to clear a path when they made their escape.
Although Lin Yi was not accustomed to fleeing every time, this time there was simply no other choice. Even top Special Forces would be devoured within seconds among these Zombie Beasts. Perhaps only someone with Lin Yi's combat prowess could charge out alone, but most people simply did not possess such formidable strength.
Lin Yi stood inside the command vehicle, enlarging all the virtual surveillance feeds. However, the screens displayed nothing but Zombie Beasts!
"Damn it! How could these things appear out of nowhere? Wasn't it impossible for a large number of Zombies to approach before?" Lin Yi slammed his hand on the metal table, his face filled with anger; he felt once again that he had been played.
"Boss, now is not the time to lose your temper. We should find a way to break through," Hai said. Ever since she acquired Divine Technique, she had become less restrained and spoke with a newfound confidence.
Lin Yi glanced at Hai and noticed her face radiated purity, as if she were basking in the warm sunlight of spring. However, he quickly shook his head, dismissing any distracting thoughts.
The convoy consisted of thirty-nine vehicles: four were dispatched to pick up the outermost team members, leaving thirty-five behind. This time, Lin Yi arranged the convoy in an arrow formation, with his command vehicle at the forefront.
"Ah—this is bad! Captain, I can't hold them off!" A sharp scream from Flower Cannon suddenly pierced through Lin Yi's earpiece.
