The exhibition hall was filled with the charred remains of Giant Zombies, burnt by Laser Beams. A light breeze swept through, carrying a foul stench from within. Lin Yi instructed Bai and a few others to handle the situation, then he contacted the other eight Squads. Their circumstances were similar to his own, though they encountered only a small number of ordinary Zombies, which they quickly dealt with. 0

However, there was a significant question lingering in his mind. Normally, even a single Zombie would charge at any human it saw, attempting to devour their flesh and blood without hesitation. Yet now, these Zombies were actively avoiding them. The thought sent chills down Lin Yi's spine, causing his entire body to tremble involuntarily. These Zombies were starting to resemble humans more and more. They were no longer mindless monsters; they had begun to think like humans. 0

What could these Zombies possibly want? Aside from eating humans, did they have other objectives? The more Lin Yi pondered, the more chaotic his thoughts became. He realized he had very little information, and many things remained shrouded in mystery. 0

"Boss, Milan has agreed to deploy millimeter-wave night vision Satellites to help us survey the area within thirty kilometers!" Just as Lin Yi was lost in thought, Witerson II rushed over from the command vehicle. 0

Lin Yi absentmindedly nodded. Even if they discovered a large number of Zombies, not understanding their intentions rendered that knowledge somewhat useless. 0

"What's wrong? Is the investigation area too large?" Witerson II asked, noticing Lin Yi's distracted gaze. 0

Lin Yi forced a smile and draped an arm over Witerson II's shoulder as they headed back to the command vehicle together. 0

Inside the vehicle, various indicator lights flashed while numerous holographic projections displayed different pieces of information. However, the primary focus remained on the terrain being surveyed by drones. Unfortunately, this type of drone had limited range, so there wasn't much visible at that moment. 0

"Reiko, do you have any bad feelings?" Lin Yi knew he couldn't place all his hopes on these vague matters, but at that moment he had no other options and could only rely on Aoling Er's ability to sense future dangers. 0

Aoling Er wore a puzzled expression and replied uncertainly, "I can only sense that this operation will encounter some unusual events, but I can't tell if there is any danger." 0

Unusual events? Was she referring to those increasingly human-like Zombies? That was indeed quite unusual. Logically speaking, the Zombie Virus should have destroyed bodily functions; even the brain would suffer corrosion. Therefore, Zombies shouldn't possess any capacity for thought. Yet now there were more and more Intelligent Zombies appearing, indicating that the Zombie Virus was far more complex than it appeared on the surface. The real question was how this Zombie Virus emerged and how humanity could permanently eradicate it—perhaps that was their only hope. 0

On the virtual projection screen appeared numerous red dots scattered across it. Most of these red dots clustered together in groups of about ten every kilometer or so. Their movements were orderly and did not resemble typical Zombie behavior at all. 0

Lin Yi glanced at one screen displaying an area within five kilometers; there were approximately twenty clusters of red dots, indicating around two hundred Zombies in total. 0

“Captain, the ten buildings centered around the City Hall have been cleared. We eliminated a total of two hundred eighteen Zombies, but we lost three team members!” Just as Lin Yi was calculating the number of Zombies in Zone 6, Jian's voice abruptly interrupted her thoughts. 0

Lin Yi glanced back; Jian stood at attention, her fitted Combat Suit accentuating her curvaceous figure. The fullness of her chest drew the eye, momentarily distracting Lin Yi. Although she was over thirty, age had left little mark on her face. Upon closer inspection, Lin Yi noticed that Jian's tight features bore some resemblance to Ying Sa, leaving her curious about their relationship. 0

“Jian, tell everyone to take a break and then split into two large groups. We need to rotate our attacks and clear out all the Zombies in Zone 6 as quickly as possible!” Lin Yi steadied her voice, secretly scolding herself for being distracted by a pretty girl at such a critical moment. 0

Jian saluted, her movements strong enough to make her chest tremble slightly. 0

“Captain, why didn’t you bring Miss Ying Sa along? This mission could take a while, and having someone to keep company would help pass the time,” Lulu said with a mischievous smile as she appeared next to Lin Yi. 0

Lin Yi felt his face flush; Lulu had clearly noticed the earlier exchange. He replied somewhat defensively, “It’s dangerous for a girl to be running around with us.” 0

In truth, Lin Yi had thought about Ying Sa. He had expected she would come along this time but hadn’t seen her even before leaving. He was unsure if Tony had any involvement with Lulu or Li Qiweng, but it seemed others thought he and Ying Sa were a good match. This thought brought an inexplicable sweetness to Lin Yi’s heart—perhaps he could be with Ying Sa? He quickly shook his head; he feared regretting his choice of Ying Sa for the rest of his life. 0

“Lin Yi, what’s next? Are we resting or what?” Pachy approached with the original group he had brought along. 0

“Have you secured all the houses you searched?” Lin Yi knew establishing this base was no easy task. It required complete control over an area to prevent even a single Zombie from getting through—a daunting challenge. 0

“Yes, each building's rooftop has been set up with four sniper points as you instructed, and we’ve stationed ten people on the first floor to support those above at any time,” Pachy replied, though his expression seemed odd, suggesting things hadn’t gone as smoothly as expected. 0

Though not overly meticulous, Lin Yi’s keen mind picked up on Pachy’s demeanor. “What’s wrong? Is there an issue?” 0

Pachy hesitated but then decided to speak frankly. “Although they’ve been integrated into our Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps, these people don’t seem very willing to cooperate with us!” 0

Lin Yi realized that he only had about a dozen close associates while their counterparts numbered over a thousand. Pachy was concerned about how this might affect their collaboration, but continuing without resolution wasn’t sustainable either. 0

"They naturally obey the strong. Pachy, your power has only reached the Two-Star level, yet they have more than a dozen who have achieved the same. So next time we take a break, I will find a way to enhance everyone's combat abilities; that should earn their respect!" Lin Yi understood that this issue would not be resolved quickly, but he believed that his own strength could definitely subdue these unruly individuals. 0

"Yeah, they're really strong. I thought I was already powerful enough, but it turns out that any one of them is on par with me!" Bai's combat power had already reached the One-Star level, which was formidable in the eyes of ordinary people, but among this thousand-strong team, it seemed rather average. 0

"Isn't your father Ying Sa also very strong?" Flower Cannon suddenly chimed in. He still preferred to carry a sniper rifle, but it looked somewhat mismatched with his delicate appearance. However, Flower Cannon's strength was also barely at the One-Star level, making him incomparable to the others. 0

"I don't know, at least Five-Star, I guess!" Lin Yi wasn't very certain. Bruh was also a Butler, but he didn't know what rank he was. Lin Yi only remembered that Bruh's name wasn't among the First-Class Stewards, so Bruh couldn't be a First-Class Steward either. However, his strength was definitely not to be underestimated. Based on Lin Yi's estimation, Anthony had also reached Six-Star; thus, someone with such personal power as Bruh must be at least Five-Star. 0

"Everyone should rest for now; it won't be easy from here on out. We don't have many personnel. But the number of Zombies could surge at any moment, so we need to stay alert!" Just thinking about the hundred thousand Zombies they had encountered before sent a chill down Lin Yi's spine. 0

All these powerful fighters naturally wouldn't fuss about needing a bed to sleep in; most found a sheltered spot to rest for a while. However, those responsible for defense still needed to set up their positions—ten buildings with over a hundred people defending them. Drones were deployed for monitoring further away; these drones could remain airborne for over half a month. 0

After a flurry of activity, dawn was approaching. Lin Yi found a place to lie down and doze off for a bit but was ultimately awakened by a series of nightmares. By this time, it was already bright outside, with sunlight pouring down. However, there were hardly any people on the streets, creating an atmosphere of desolation. 0

Lin Yi rubbed his eyes to dispel the unpleasant memories from his mind and stepped out of the command vehicle. A refreshing scent lingered in the air after the rain. Yet this freshness was heavily mixed with an unmistakable stench of decay and faint traces of blood. The blood from those devoured by Zombies months ago had resurfaced after being soaked by the heavy rain. 0

After half an hour, people began waking up one after another, and Lin Yi started making arrangements. However, this time they had less than half of their available manpower. Lin Yi decided to establish new bases without rest and needed to organize shifts for collaboration. 0

Things progressed much more smoothly than Lin Yi had anticipated. In just one effort, the four hundred-person team had cleared all areas within a one-kilometer radius. However, they had only eliminated just over three hundred Zombies—merely two hundred more than last night's sweep. It seemed these Zombies truly exhibited human-like traits; whether this news was good or bad remained uncertain. If these Zombies became more human-like, they might develop fear and wouldn't fight to the death as recklessly. But at the same time, if they gained intelligence, that would be an even more terrifying prospect... 0
