The heavy rain came suddenly and left just as quickly. Just as Lin Yi and his team caught sight of the city's outline, it was as if the rain had been abruptly halted by some unseen force.
"This time, our main objective is to conduct a sweep. The number of Zombies shouldn't be too high. The thousand new members joining our team are all exceptional fighters, so I hope everyone can cooperate well with them. We will be fighting side by side for a long time to come!" Lin Yi reminded everyone, just to be safe.
Although the addition of a thousand people was a good thing for the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps, if they couldn't manage the conflicts between the new and old members, the team's combat effectiveness would suffer greatly. Lin Yi, despite his lazy nature, had to address this issue in advance.
Everyone understood the situation. Since Lin Yi had already spoken up, there was no need for further discussion. Moreover, with the expansion of the team, their ability to protect themselves would be significantly enhanced.
About five minutes later, the vehicles finally drove onto the main road of the city. City No. 6 was more like a large town than a city. Lin Yi's squad was primarily responsible for leading personnel in the sweep operation since the thousand new recruits had only undergone training and had not yet faced Zombies in direct combat.
Once the command vehicle was ready, Pachy was tasked with launching several surveillance drones into the air for reconnaissance. According to their pre-established plan, everyone would conduct sweeps in designated areas.
The thousand-member team had gathered in the open space, illuminated by car headlights that turned it into a sea of light; however, not far away remained pitch black. Standing there felt like being lost in an expansive universe—small and lonely.
"Jian! Is everyone here?" The woman named Jian from the training camp was responsible for leading her team alongside Lin Yi to eliminate Zombies.
"All one thousand and one members are present, Captain Lin!" Jian stood tall, exuding confidence as if waves of determination were about to surge forth. Lin Yi controlled his emotions as he focused solely on Jian's eyes.
"Good! Now quickly divide into ten teams of one hundred each; we will set off immediately!" Lin Yi commanded. Their mission was daunting; they needed to check even the restrooms thoroughly.
The team under Jian was well-trained. As soon as Lin Yi's voice fell, the thousand-strong unit began to spread out, quickly forming a hundred-person squad. This time, Lin Yi's squad consisted of ten people, but naturally, the few women could not be allowed to lead the team, as their primary strength did not lie in combat.
"What is the combat capability of this team?" Lin Yi asked, frowning. He only knew that these individuals were at least at the level of Special Elite Soldiers, but he was unsure about the strongest among them.
"Report, Captain. There are nine hundred members at the level of Special Elite Soldiers, and the remaining one hundred have reached Star Level. Among them, eighty-seven are One-Star, thirteen are Two-Star, and one is Three-Star!" Jian saluted Lin Yi again. Standing tall, her chest nearly brushed against Lin Yi's chin.
"Three-Star?" Lin Yi couldn't help but widen his mouth in surprise. He had previously estimated that during the training camp in Ethiopia, Li Qiweng and Pachy had surpassed the level of ordinary elite soldiers and reached One-Star combat capability. Later, through the Potential Gene Drug's catalysis, although its effects had worn off, those who had taken the Gene Drug had generally seen an increase in their combat abilities. The few women had only risen to the highest level of Special Elite Soldiers. "Great! The stronger the combat power, the better life will be for everyone! You select ten individuals with Two-Star combat levels to each lead a squad. I'll assign one person from my side to each squad; they are familiar with zombies!" Lin Yi quickly began making arrangements. Aside from Jian, he found it difficult to distinguish anyone else in this thousand-member unit as they all looked quite similar.
Jian smiled slightly and waved her hand; immediately ten people stepped out of the ranks, clearly having been pre-selected as squad leaders. Lin Yi nodded without hesitation and signaled for his people to quickly choose a squad and stand ready.
Pachy directly walked to the far-left squad, followed closely by Bai. The others also chose their respective squads in quick succession. Witerson II was initially preparing to join them but was stopped by Lin Yi: "You’re responsible for monitoring from the command room and report back to us at all times!"
As for Hai, Aoling Er, and Lulu, they were in a similar situation; their strengths did not lie in combat either. Originally Ouyang Shasha was also meant to stay behind, but she insisted on being in Lin Yi's squad. With some reservations in his heart, Lin Yi agreed.
Once the teams were equipped with weapons and tools, they quickly began searching for their targets. The squad led by Lin Yi chose to search near City Hall—a ten-story building that stood as the tallest structure in the area. Lin Yi decided to set up four sniper points on the rooftop of this building so they could comprehensively monitor the situation within that radius.
The 3D projection display in Lin Yi's hand could receive real-time surveillance information from drones; thus he didn't need to worry too much about encountering large hordes of zombies. With their team's combat strength, even if faced with tens of thousands of zombies, they could still make a smooth escape. Moreover, they would quickly detect if tens of thousands of zombies began gathering nearby.
The first floor of City Hall was an open hall, with only a few columns providing any cover. When Lin Yi and his hundred companions surged in, the spacious hall felt somewhat crowded. A few agile individuals quickly set up several high-powered smart lights on the ceiling, illuminating the entire area in an instant.
"Leave two people to guard the entrance, and the rest continue forward!" Lin Yi decided to press on as he saw no immediate threats. The passage to the second floor consisted of two flights of stairs and two elevators, but with the entire town experiencing a power outage, they had no choice but to take the stairs.
The sound of military boots echoed loudly against the marble floor, reverberating through the empty hall. Lin Yi led over forty people up the left staircase, while Jian took the remaining group up the right.
Lin Yi was the first to reach the second floor, which appeared to be a U-shaped corridor lined with offices on one side. Jian's group likely encountered similar surroundings on their side.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!" They kicked open door after door, but aside from a scene of chaos, there were no unexpected developments. However, many areas contained darkened remnants resembling human bones, emitting a strong foul odor. To be safe, Lin Yi ordered everyone to collect these remains for cremation.
The situation on the third floor was similar to that on the second, but there were even more skeletons here, with bloodstains splattered across various places—though they had already turned black and rancid.
By the time they reached the fourth floor, it had transformed into a dormitory area, and the conditions worsened significantly. Everywhere was littered with bones gnawed by zombies and remnants of flesh. Lin Yi even spotted several skulls with sparse hair remaining; looking into those hollow eye sockets made him feel as if these wronged souls were lamenting their late arrival.
The situation continued to deteriorate further down the hall, with signs of struggle everywhere. The rooms were filled with a strong, nauseating stench. Dark blood mixed with unidentified substances had painted the once-white walls into a horrifying depiction of hellish nightmares. Even Lin Yi felt a chill run down his spine at the sight. Clearly, the zombies had come too suddenly; as they ascended higher, the chances of escape grew slimmer.
The search party moved swiftly; after some time, they reached the top floor. However, this level was now piled high with more decaying limbs and flesh. Massive carnivorous insects buzzed around, preparing to feast on what remained. Yet for some unknown instinctual reason, they did not land on the human remains.
Lin Yi waved his hand to give orders; everyone donned gloves and began tossing these limbs off the rooftop. Following their earlier plan, Lin Yi decided to position four snipers at this vantage point! He silently thanked his luck that they hadn’t encountered any zombies in this building; it seemed like a promising start.
